What little things in your day to day life bring you joy?

I have been feeling extremely down and low over the past few months and kind of focusing on the negative parts of my life/things that may be going wrong or not working out. I’m sick of feeling sad all of the time and have decided to try and focus on the things that bring me happiness each day, even little things like getting comfy in bed at night and reading a good book.

I wanted to create this post because I’m interested in what other people get enjoyment out of in their average day and also I kind of find it comforting to hear.

HRTQueen · 11/01/2024 21:57

Tea in bed in the morning. I set my alarm 30 min early so I can do this cuddled up with my cat

at this time of year cosy bed covers. Recently bought velour covers and have brushed cotton sheets

a few skin care products I don’t think they will make much difference but I like make a fuss of myself after not bothering so much on recent years

Audible books I love the audible specials too Stephen Fry History and French & Saunders just wittering about a particular topic and going off on a tangent

I have put a tv back in my bedroom only watch it at night and I really enjoy it

merryhouse · 11/01/2024 22:12

I remember a few years ago when I was fed up with various things I decided I could No Longer Be Arsed to co-ordinate my clothes and I would just pull on the first pair of socks from the drawer.

I was stunned to discover that I was taking joy in the patterns of the socks, and suddenly I was liking clothes again.

It was a bit weird, really. I think I'd got so hung up on following Rules that I'd forgotten the fun.

Thank you so much everyone for adding your responses to this thread! I couldn’t read them all properly until I got home from work and I’ve enjoyed going through them. Just hearing about what small things bring other people happiness makes me feel happy and also makes me see the joy in them too. I’m going to try some of them, and notice when I’m doing something that I love and taking time to appreciate it

Every day i have a Great spotted woodpecker coming for his peanuts, hes beautiful, watching him is a joy!

..oh and eating good Carrot cake

ProjectsGalore · 11/01/2024 23:11

I love this thread and enjoy almost all of what has been said so far. I also enjoy my window bird feeder, my group of women I wild swim and sew with, my essential oil diffuser, my log burner and having a cup of tea while my robot hoover pootles around cleaning my floors.

Planting seeds and using my tiny porch as a greenhouse.

Washing my face with a lovely face cleanser thing each morning.

Random hugs and I love yous from dc.

Writing in my one line a day journal.

Listening to music or the radio -an instant mood lifter. Especially if you put on an old favourite album.

Hot chocolate, with full fat milk and squirty cream.

A big new book to dive into.

Properly exfoliating my face and smothering it in moisturizer before bed.

Cozy pyjamas and thick socks in winter.

A chat with a friend over coffee.

Cooking something totally indulgent that needs a bit of concentration and patience.

Daft dog videos on Tiktok.

Watching old episodes of New Girl and Parks & Recreation.

My poodle is absolutely delighted to see me when I go down in the morning. She brings a smile to my face every day. I love cuddling her on the sofa in the evening, with my heated throw over me. I walk her twice a day at the park and she runs like the wind, chasing other dogs, leaves and sticks. She brings me such joy. I’ve been having a terrible time and she’s saved me.

My morning walk with my dog

Getting into bed having taken off my makeup and brushed my teeth

WorriedMillie · 12/01/2024 07:06

Love this thread, I’ll have a read through later. For me:

A nice bath with candles
using nice shower gel (not expensive)
Putting on fluffy socks
Having a tidy enough house
Clean sheets
Getting outside, even if just for a few minutes
Using the Merlin bird app ❤️
A cuppa and chat with my friend
A mug of posh Earl grey tea (Joe’s!)
A nice cake from the bakery
Echo daffodils and/or a hyacinth
Doing random acts of kindness for people, even just a kind word ❤️

Arabaloosa · 12/01/2024 07:39

It's lovely to hear what being others joy 😊 I agree with OP, it's like a memory jog when you read something that resonates with you and it makes you rediscover that joy again. Thank you all for sharing

dullandgrey · 12/01/2024 07:50

Yesterday was having a shower with a new shower oil which smelt amazing, trying out a new lip balm which I was going to save until my current one was used up but decided to anyway and it's lovely, and getting into bed with lovely fresh sheets on. I'm trying to do small things also to make myself feel better. So far I've been using perfume which I don't usually do, even if it's just staying home all day. I've also got a new collection of herbal teas to try so a quiet moment with one of those also has been making me happy. I've also been making use of my maternity leave quiet afternoons when DC is at childcare and watching movies, mostly rewatching classics. I think I need to next invest in a fleece blanket as the weather is getting colder for snuggles.

Peacelily001 · 12/01/2024 09:47

I’ve bought a heated throw/blanket off the back of this thread!

I love opening a new bar of soap. I stopped using shower gel a long time ago, and have a collection (mostly bought from TK Maxx)

Coffee coffee coffee

Walking in nature. I don’t do this enough.

Decluttering. I struggle with this as my DS won’t let anything go, and I have an emotional attachment to so many things, but a decluttered home is my main goal for 2024.

Thank you for this lovely thread OP, and hope you feel better soon.

jellytots18 · 12/01/2024 09:59

feeling my baby move 🥰 I am 37 weeks pregnant with first baby we are so excited.

Doone22 · 12/01/2024 10:09

I'm part of a FB group where someone posted that instead of going around watching out for "triggers" everyone should do around looking for "glimmers" which I thought was a lovely way of describing it.
I have a painting in my living room that gives me a tiny moment of joy every time I look at it. I feel that when my chickens come running to see me or my boy comes in from school. I feel that when I get in my pjs, put a film on and light the fire. I make it happen by making my favourite enchiladas. Everyone has their own set though, yours will be different.

P. S. Well done for doing this. So many people refuse to take responsibility for their own happiness and you are totally doing the right thing to instill habits of a lifetime of 😊.

Abbyant · 12/01/2024 10:10

I might be in the minority but I love making our lunch boxes in the morning it brings me a bit of joy knowing my family is fed and will have a nice surprise/treat when they get to lunch time.

Onceyoupopyoushouldstop · 12/01/2024 10:19

Morning coffee in bed.

Getting into freshly washed sheets.

Listening to the rain (ideally in bed....There seems to be a theme here 🤣)

When my dog wiggles at me to say hello.

Seeing the orange/red sun set most evenings (live on a hill)

The little chat with my DD on the way to and from school.

Sitting in the dining room, listening to music with dp with a bottle of wine at the weekend.

DisruptiveCumin · 12/01/2024 10:27

I try to go out and have a walk every day, even a very short one makes me feel better. I also have a list of books to read and movies to watch and use my free time for that as well. Having a hobby helps too, my current one is photo restoration: DH has 2 big photo albums of really old family photos and I'm restoring them through Photoglory and he's going to make a photo book out of them later.
Also back to the physical activity point, it's great for your health and mood, so having a walk would make a huge difference but for the bad weather days you can try home based workouts by following Youtube channels. I do Chloe Ting's workouts when I don't feel like going out and I love them!

MrsMarzetti · 12/01/2024 10:48

A short walk then taking time to just sit and enjoy a cup of tea, no radio, no phone just peace, quiet and stillness. I think many of us are never still, either physically or mentally.

Passingthethyme · 12/01/2024 10:53

Decluttering and organising! Listening to music when I was late teens and reminiscing

Bbq1 · 12/01/2024 12:36

Flyhigher · 12/01/2024 03:25

What do you talk about every day with your mum? X

Everything @Flyhigher! We're very close and talk about anything and everything - gossip, family, mum checking on my health, her adored gs, tv, plans we are making, theatre, books we like, setting the world to rights... We are best friends and I can tell my mum anything. She's the best mum.

AllrightNowBaby · 12/01/2024 12:48

I have been feeding the birds in my garden for years and it gives me a lot of pleasure. So if you have any way of doing that, I would recommend it. I have one cheeky Robin who sits on my clothes line and stares through the kitchen window (arms folded, tapping her foot 🤣) if there’s no food left.
I appreciate not everyone can have one but my little dog is a great joy to me.
Also, small things.
I was walking in a park recently and everything is bare and soggy and I spotted a patch of yellow, it was a tiny little primrose, bravely flowering amid the Winter gloom.
It made me inordinately happy 😊
