What little things in your day to day life bring you joy?

I have been feeling extremely down and low over the past few months and kind of focusing on the negative parts of my life/things that may be going wrong or not working out. I’m sick of feeling sad all of the time and have decided to try and focus on the things that bring me happiness each day, even little things like getting comfy in bed at night and reading a good book.

I wanted to create this post because I’m interested in what other people get enjoyment out of in their average day and also I kind of find it comforting to hear.

Running with my dog brings me joy - beautiful trail runs, watching the seasons change, being outdoors whatever the weather, the adrenalin and rush it gives me, chatting with my friends when they join me, my dogs delirious happiness at running free - nothing beats it.

Also definitely clean sheets, if you don’t already do this once a week, then try and aim for that. Do a self care evening first, then hop into clean sheets. It’s the simple things that make me happier.

@MrsFloof you've got a Maine Coon?! Do you have any pictures of him to share on here? I've only seen pictures online but they look so majestic - heard they're really friendly and content despite their size.

I have one as well. He’s only 2, so still very much growing.

i will get a pic tomorrow, almost 10pm here and he’s sound asleep somewhere!

A lovely candle, listening to music with my earphones in, watching cleaning videos, a new fabric softner, and scrambled eggs on toast ( my gran always used to make them when I was down with salted butter, bread and tomato sauce, so they remind me very much of her)

On the daily:
Reading
Listening to a podcast
My pets
A mug of the lovely Turkish tea I get from my local grocer
Playing chess on an app on my phone

Less frequently:
Having my nails done (every 3 weeks)
Going to the cinema
Meeting a friend for a walk, a brew, or a drink.
Getting artwork from my nieces
Gardening - especially growing flowers.
Having a coffee out.

Daffodils in the shops - I'll be buying those for the flat until the shops stop selling them around April
It's gradually getting darker a bit later
Daft I know, but mt new TV bench that I put together yesterday. It's a cheap Ikea one, but it looks so much better than the one I had for years.

Sleeping in! (I don't have any school age dc any more so no one minds if I sleep till 9 or later apart from dh who has to get up for 7:30 for work. Dc are responsible for getting themselves to work!).

The dog. He officially belongs to dd2 but in reality he's mine!

The couple of hours after my cleaners have Ben before the house starts to get messy again.

Cooking. I'm at home full time due to a disability but usually I can cook for everyone. It's hard sometimes but gives me an awesome sense of achievement and I like eating my own food too.

Writing in my journal.

Mumaway · 11/01/2024 14:09

Second hand books.
Half-caff coffee beans so I can have twice as many cups.

Putting the electric throw into my bed at level 4 an hour before bedtime so that when I get into bed it feels INCREDIBLE.

I'm a level 4 fan too! Add a book I'm looking forward to reading and a cat, and it's genuinely paradise.

KeepSmiling89 · 11/01/2024 14:14

I'm going to keep adding to this list and reading other responses as it's bringing me so much joy!
The wind down time with my 2 year old DD before she goes to bed - I sit cross legged on the floor, she brings her favourite book to me then sits in the wee nest my legs have made while I read it to her.

Westsussex · 11/01/2024 14:16

A morning coffee alone
A meditiation from YouTube (try boho beautiful, they saved me)
Walks in the cold, fresh air/woods
Warm baths with epsom salts
Spring flowers
A clean home with a candle lit
Reading
Wine
A great tv series old or new
Watching birds in my garden
Funny podcasts when cleaning or walking (try the whitteting whitehalls!)
A great bodyscrub that makes you feel zingy. Try Sunday Rain tropical mango it's the best one I've ever found, and only about £6
As another lady said above, lavender sleep spray and balm before bed
My cosy knitwear
Take vitamin D
Cats
My mumma

Xx

I love these threads.

I'll add giving my guinea pigs their carrot for breakfast.

LongTermLurker · 11/01/2024 14:19

Listening to my favourite music
Paying attention to / spending time in nature
Wearing a lovely perfume (I love when I get a little warm waft out the top of my jumper :-D )
Looking forward to watching something good on the telly.
Hot chocolate (especially in my favourite mug)
My hot water bottle (love the rubbery smell)
Burying my face into one of my cats
Using a nice Neom fragrance oil in my diffuser
Just started a "Q&A a Day Five Year Journal" which is surprisingly enjoyable and fun.

GameofPhones · 11/01/2024 14:20

My dog, Guaranteed to make me smile and give me love with no strings or complications. Cats are the same, but easier to look after.

YouDefinitelyShouldNotDoThat · 11/01/2024 14:22

Music for me- singing along to karaoke backing tracks.
Oh, and my new sex toy. Sorry, but it really does add enjoyment to my day! 🤭

HappyMouse · 11/01/2024 14:22

Nice smelling house

Going to bed early with a good book

Light exercise followed by a hot shower with nice smelling shower gel

Coffee in bed or at the dining table in the morning.

Hot chocolate, snuggled on the sofa

HappyMouse · 11/01/2024 14:23

Oh, and a nice vase of flowers

Snowydaysfaraway · 11/01/2024 14:24

My dd had these made for me for Christmas.. Make me smile whenever I look at them.

IcakethereforeIam · 11/01/2024 14:25

The bulbs, especially the fritilaries, poking up in the garden.
A new leaf on a house plant.
Cup of tea and a biscuit.
Birds in the garden, especially if it's a species I don't see every day.

Theoldwoman · 11/01/2024 14:26

OP if you watch YouTube, have a look at TheCottageFairy**, her videos are so so beautiful and calming.

ErrolTheDragon · 11/01/2024 14:27

A pot outside the front door containing a sweet box which smells lovely at this time of year.

Snowydaysfaraway · 11/01/2024 14:28

And pottering in my garden. Befriended a little blackbird last summer... Proper warmed my heart!!
Dcat and a bit of sunbathing...

Spookymormonhelldream · 11/01/2024 14:28

My velvetiser. Got it as a 'family' present at Christmas. I love having a hot chocolate before bed!

therealcookiemonster · 11/01/2024 14:29

BigMandsTattooPortfolio · 11/01/2024 14:33

When a bunch of blue tits come and perch on the window and look in. Watching them fly around chasing each other. Such joyful little birds.
