What inconsequential things (or not so inconsequential!) have you done to embarrass yourself and caused a partner or date to get the ick? Perhaps you got dumped or he was never seen again. or perhaps you died of embarrassment and just went into hiding.

Back in the day, I went on a date with a guy I used to work with. He told me he thought I was the loveliest girl he'd ever seen. We went for a drink and I was so nervous that I got absolutely plastered. I put my shoes on the table and said someone in the bar was a f*ing c**. I don't know why, because I never spoke like that normally! I didn't even fancy him really, but it had been my first date in ages. We tried a sober date the next time but I think I just talked too much and it was all a bit weird with a strange peck at the end.

My parents put my graduation picture in the paper a few years later and he got back in touch to say congratulations. Think he had thought I was a bit common and uneducated but changed his tune when I got a First!

It's a def 'ick' for me as well I'm afraid. My H is autistic and had many special interest phases (triathlon, woodwork, 3d printing) and none of them gave me the ick except the 'Fortnite' phase. It gives me the ick now just to think about it (we're separated now).

Can you explain why?

I’ve never played fortnite as it’s too childish for me but I play call of duty which is like the adult version.

I think a lot of MNers would agree with him going by some threads!

(Not me though).

Yes, because it's childish.

To me all gaming is childish, it's like a childhood development stage that adults should have grown out of by now.

I have a visceral 'ick' reaction to adults in childish roles.

This is innate in me, and you can debate it, I'm not saying it's a fact that gaming is childish I'm saying the visceral reaction to watching an adult game is for me like watching them drink out of a sippy cup or wear a bib.

No I really appreciate your honesty actually.

So do you also feel that way with adults playing board games or playing sports?

whyphone · 05/01/2024 19:41

Sports, no, I don't know anyone who plays board games for pleasure rather than as a family activity so I can't really answer that question.

But yeah, thinking on it the adults in the dungeons and dragon cafe near me give me the ick.

whyphone · 05/01/2024 19:43

My brain makes a link from childish activity to childlike time and that gives me the ick. Like a massive sexual turnoff because I couldn't possibly find anything or anyone childlike sexually attractive.

Does that make sense?

We're talking about the ick here not a cognitive judgement of a person.

whyphone · 05/01/2024 19:43

to childlike brain that should have said, not childlike time.

Imagine being on a date with a woman in nice heels and then seeing it as a personal attack on him!

What an absolute bellend! Lol

Absolute bellend sums him up perfectly.

Oh wow that’s so strange!

I wonder if it’s something to do with an experience you had as a child or something.

It’s funny how our brains sometimes perceive things in an odd way.

Thanks for being so honest.

I don't think it's particularly strange, it's a very common ick going by what the poster I was responding too said.

Obviously I can't say why other people seeing adults game get the ick, but plenty of us do.

SidekickSylvia · 05/01/2024 20:21

I fell up the stairs. First date, upstairs bar, I turned to him to laugh and I saw the light in his eyes go out. I was 18, sober and still cringe about it now.

So Excited Flirting GIF

I giggled at his shimmy. He took our salsa lessons VERY seriously. 10 months together and it all ended with that shimmy!

But if you equate it to being childlike then that’s quite odd because they’re designed for adults and on top of that lots of things that we do as children, we continue to do as adults, especially when it comes to hobbies - gaming, sports, reading, jigsaws etc.

So I’m wondering where it comes from and I assume it’s something that happened in the past.
Not anything bad but something that made you think, I’ve got to a certain age so that means I can’t do this particular thing anymore.

Although, you would definitely get the ick with me at the moment.
I usually only play games that are 15/18+ but I’m actually playing the Hogwarts game (12) and I’ve even read the Harry Potter books as an adult 🤣

Yeah, thank you, I'm a therapist myself I don't need you to attempt to analyse on a random thread about the ick.

Try not to worry about how my comments have made you feel, they aren't personal, I wasn't even talking to you.

I remember wearing mean's PJ trousers in the 1980s, tucked into long boots. A complete stranger (male) tapped me on the shoulder in Covent Garden and asked if I was aware I was wearing men's paisley PJs. I said yes. He said, 'But why? Just why?' He was so baffled by it. He really wanted an answer and I couldn't give him one he approved of. He wandered away so confused. Grin

Serves him right . Covent Garden too ffs! Hope it ruins his life 😂

Shamoo44 · 05/01/2024 20:45

There was the time when I went on a first date with a gorgeous man I'd had a crush on for ages. We had a curry, I had an allergic reaction, I projectile vomited all over him and his dinner. Couldn't really blame him for getting the ick.

I said I didn’t like the Big Bang Theory and he said, in all earnest, that we should probably break up.

It’s such a completely mediocre programme 😂😂😂

HappyNewYears · 05/01/2024 20:47

I came on this thread hoping it would be a lovely list of things partners do that make you fall in love with them ie reverse ikk. Walks away disappointed.

roarrfeckingroar · 05/01/2024 20:49

I agree with the gaming ick. To me it's just a phenomenal waste of time and a bit, well, slobby. When I hear gaming I picture dark rooms, headsets and adults shouting into the ether for no tangible gain: something about seeing grown adults lose hours of their time doing something I don't see intrinsic value in (unlike, say, sport or reading) is just wholly off putting in a relationship.

I'm sure they're nice people, just not someone I went to date

Dodged a bullet there I reckon. It's shite!

I had an amazing date lined up and went out of my way to get well groomed for her. We were in a restaurant and in the middle of our main course she placed her knife and fork down, folded her napkin onto the table and simply said “I can’t do this anymore. From the side you look like an Alpaca.”

As you can imagine I was deeply hurt, even though it’s true. I am an Alpaca. I haven’t dated a woman since.

Bravo 👏👏👏

And excellent name 😂😂😂
