The Reverse Ick thread…

What inconsequential things (or not so inconsequential!) have you done to embarrass yourself and caused a partner or date to get the ick? Perhaps you got dumped or he was never seen again. or perhaps you died of embarrassment and just went into hiding.

I agree with the gaming ick. To me it's just a phenomenal waste of time and a bit, well, slobby. When I hear gaming I picture dark rooms, headsets and adults shouting into the ether for no tangible gain: something about seeing grown adults lose hours of their time doing something I don't see intrinsic value in (unlike, say, sport or reading) is just wholly off putting in a relationship.

I'm sure they're nice people, just not someone I went to date

I think I agree with you. It's the imagery of someone holed away in a dark room, possibly unwashed and seriously lacking in vitamin D. I'm sure not all gamers are like that, it's just the first image to spring to mind.

If someone said to me in real life 'I'm into gaming' my immediate thought would be 'aww..that's sad...'

Sport/ communal hobbies/anything that takes place in the fresh air are a turn on for me, as are good social skills and confidence, so a man who embodies those would get a thumbs up.

People who don't like games have obviously never played them

Obviously.

The one who got away/ love of my life in my twenties eventually went back to his home country due to a work transfer. He was from a ranch but had been working in London; we had loads of fun dates there. He’d been really serious about me and it was such a sudden end.

We later exchanged emails (think nearly 20 years later) and turns out he was going to propose. He didn’t in the end only because I’d said I wanted to live in London (it was an off the cuff comment I’d made because he lived there - I actually don’t like London and love the countryside). This meant, according to him, that I was a city girl and a marriage wouldn’t work out.

What an idiot.
I’m glad he didn’t propose. He got weirder with age.

Edited

That man is a complete idiot. He doesn't deserve to be the love of your life, are you joking?😂I don't think he was going to propose - if he was he wouldn't have broke up with you over such a stupid reason. Believe me he is lying - possibly because he wants to be with you now instead. Be wary of him.

It's one thing to try something and not like it - people who criticise something fun (games) without trying are boring. Nobody who's ever played a game thinks it isn't fun!

HappyNewYears · 06/01/2024 19:14

I’ve played games that weren’t fun, but also plenty that were.

When I was 22 a guy dumped me because I chewed with my mouth open. I was mortified!

Sorry, but he was right to get the ick. Chewing with an open mouth is disgusting (and often noisy).

Maybe he was lying, who knows. We're not in contact anymore as this was a while ago and I went off him further when he said he wanted to have loads of kids (we're now in our forties - good luck with that mate!).

I actually don't think he was lying though. He is overly serious about everything and it doesn't surprise me in retrospect that he did that. We broke up when he had to leave the country, but this is why apparently I went completely out of the window as wife material. He wanted a country girl. Fair enough I suppose!

I would have been fine with that.

Load of rubbish lol (him not you).

Minfor · 06/01/2024 19:38

@2Old2Tango well yes, hence being mortified! I obviously hadn't realised I did it, and have made a conscious effort not to do it since.

@whyphone you’re not being lighthearted. You’re being defensive and passive aggressive. Surely you should be able to take a bit of challenging, as a therapist.

@pikkumyy77 as a therapist, you surely don’t need to say an anonymous poster is out of line for being curious about the source of someone’s ick

as a therapist, I think you both need to have some therapy and stop being so superior.

😊

A bit like people who surround themselves and immerse themselves in books, really. Just a different type of escapism. It’s just that books are more 'elite' in some circles.

That’s a very fair point.

gannett · 06/01/2024 20:19

Interesting that so many of these "icks" boil down to twat men feeling a woman hasn't performed traditional femininity right.

Fits with a lot of the MN ick threads boiling down to posters feeling a man hasn't performed traditional masculinity right.

Nobody has said, or even implied that men are vile creatures in either thread though.

‘Men are such vile creatures’. Still my favorite mumsnet aphorism.

Yep. If you get an ick it’s the man’s fault. If he gets an ick, it’s his fault.

I've tried computer games, I didn't think they were fun I thought they were boring

I don't judge those that do though, I hate the snobbery around books are good but gaming is bad. But that doesn't mean everyone who tries games will like them

pikkumyy77 · 06/01/2024 20:37

What a weird diversion from an otherwise enjoyable thread. Random poster “x gives me the ick” other random posters (multiple)” how dare you not like my hobby! What’s wrong with you!” Poster: nothing wrong with me just don’t like x” other posters “ooooh! Get her! Isn’t she sensitive!”

So true! It’s completely ruined the thread!

Lasegna · 06/01/2024 20:43

I wonder what games you've tried. It's like saying you don't like movies to me😅

But fair play if you've had a go and would rather do something else!

gannett · 06/01/2024 20:48

TBH I'm not a gamer and neither is DP but if someone says gaming gives them the ick, it just makes them sound ignorant. It's like saying watching films gives you the ick, or listening to music gives you the ick. OK, we get it, you can't help how you feel, but it's a dumb as shit thing to say out loud.

pikkumyy77 · 06/01/2024 20:49

All joking aside men banging on and in about their hobbies, or obsessed with spirts fandom, or gaming, would give me the ick. So I never dated anyone like that and married someone who isn’t interested in those things. I have perhaps missed out on some wonderful guys. The fact that I don’t like sports and wouldn’t date a huge fan for example, doesn’t mean I they are bad people. Just not for me.

This had the potential to be as funny as the other thread but the nit picking is fucking annoying

Firefly2009 · 06/01/2024 21:15

I only started this thread because I was asked to! It's also a nice diversion from the one on politics (yikes!) Gaming and the like is just a matter of taste, and this thread is just about that - taste.

I probably have put off a lot of men with things I'm not aware of. I wouldn't be that surprised.

It's a subjective thread. Gaming is okay for some and not for others. The End.

I'm trying to think of another reverse ick now....I think the fact I just cut all my hair off might cause an ick on my next date. At which point I'll start a thread complaining about it, of course,
(I won't really).

😂I don't really like films, only TV shows... Maybe there's a correlation here?

Jesus christ the gamers on here are ridiculously offended over other ppl disliking it. Bloody get over it.
