I was just coming on to say Chandler had died

Such a difficult life he seemed to have. I lot of struggle with himself. So very sad.

Super sad. I don't think that show would have been at all a success without him. RIP

What a shame.

Friends re-runs got me through the darkest episodes of my life and Matthew was the funniest on it. Made me laugh no matter how upset I was in real life. He helped me to shut off from the world for a little while. So so sad. In tears right now. 💔

Most people in the UK aren't gonna know this awful news yet, feel bad knowing what some of his fans are gonna wake up to in the morning.

I listened to the audiobook version of his autobiography recently, I genuinely believed he’d managed to overcome his addiction. It feels even sadder that if this is still true, his body was too damaged after all that abuse 😣 so many happy memories of watching friends with my friends when I was a teenager. RIP Matthew Perry

I never get upset by celebrity deaths but feel really gutted tonight. The poor man has looked haunted for years, I hope he's found peace.

I’ve a had a cry. What a shock. He was so funny as Chandler Bing. Friends has been a constant since my teens and I’ve been turning to it again recently as watching it has always brought comfort. RIP Matthew Perry.

So upset about this.
He was 53,
Friends was with the me through my teens, twenties, thirties, fourties, and now my daughter loves it.

So sad to have just read this scrolling on the Guardian website just now. Like others, Friends was my go to in bad times and I've rewatched it so many times. It won't be the same now knowing that he has passed. As someone also said upthread, I don't think Friends would have been such a success without him, he played Chandler so well. What a sad loss, RIP Matthew 😪😪

Celebrity deaths dont usual affect me bit this hit hard. A real shock.

All during my cancer treatment and being off sick from work Friends has got me through. Even though people tell me its so dated now Im straight back to been 24 and living in London. He was the best one in it for me. I bet the others are devastated. I felt so sorry for him at the reunion he was like a lost soul.

i think my favourite was when he told Janice he was going to work in the Yemen😃

I read he'd been exercising in the morning then later went in hot tub whilst he sent his assistant on some errands and they were gone for 2 hours, came back and found him 😢

Absolutely gutted when I heard the news.

Friends was the most defining TV show of my life. I watched the very first show that aired and it's been comfort TV for the last 30 years.

I grieve for Matthew Perry, a wonderful comic actor who left too soon. And I grieve for beloved Chandler Bing, a character who really felt like a "friend" after all these years.

What a shock. Friends was all part of our lives years ago. Too young. RIP.

Devastating to hear this evening. I was at a dinner party when my son texted me the news. We are all so shocked. He was always my favourite Friend.

That's awful. He was so young, I think he was the youngest of the cast.

So very sad, although I really wish I had never read his book, he sounded like such a prick.

I'm not shocked at all by this, but it is very very sad. He has been battling his demons for many years, and I fear it was inevitable.

I rewatched the whole series of friends not long ago. Everyone was wonderful, but I couldn’t help noticing that he was working on a whole different level.
