God reading his instagram posts is quite distressing actually I'm going to stop

IVFlife · 29/10/2023 07:02

V sad

Sux2buthen · 29/10/2023 07:02

@OopsaDazy oh bore off and let people feel how they feel without a fucking lecture. It's so tedious reading all the sanctimonious twits putting people down for feeling sad about something.
It's sad to many.

I think only the women on the Friends cast were genuinely close. It was pretty obvious he had his demons. The media are quick to say no drugs because the powers up don't want anything affecting the Friends brand. Ages ago, there was a thing with Matt Le Blanc apparently being caught with a woman when married but I heard he was actually caught taking cocaine but this was deemed a bigger no no than being caught cheating so they gave the fake cheating story.

That's not really how PR, journalism or celebrity agents work. It's more likely he was caught cheating, and also caught doing coke. But there was more 'work' done to hush up the coke story.

Addictions are bastards to beat and he sadly seemed to spend his entire life trying to do so. I also think it was deliberate by his Instagram posts - he'd just had enough of the fight.

I found the reunion show a very hard watch because he clearly wasn't in a good place and I'm not really sure that he should have taken part in it. Rest in peace.

Simplepink · 29/10/2023 07:25

As others have said Friends was my big warm blanket growing up. He was so talented. Such a sad thing to hear

Butchyrestingface · 29/10/2023 07:31

This was sad, sad news to wake up to. Thanks for the laughs, Matthew.

MyCircumference · 29/10/2023 07:32

what a sad ending RIP

Ladymarycrawley1920 · 29/10/2023 07:34

Terribly, terribly sad. I hope he’s at peace now.

Freshair1 · 29/10/2023 07:35

His Instagram was utterly strange in the last few days. What on earth?

SidekickSylvia · 29/10/2023 07:39

Really sad news, he was far too young.

SummerDawn2000 · 29/10/2023 07:40

it seems to me he lived his life like a Chandler in the wind

Apossum · 29/10/2023 07:41

It’s so, so sad. He was fantastically funny. I hope he’s at peace now, far from the demons that plagued him.

Any death is sad for the person and their family.

But I can't see how you can be devastated by the death of someone most people have never heard of, and you don't know except as a screen persona.

Honestly, get some perspective.

Have some compassion

Magnoliasunrise · 29/10/2023 07:44

Very sad. Rest in Peace Matthew Perry ❤

Antst · 29/10/2023 07:44

Well, I realize there are many people who feel a connection to him because Friends was such a big deal in people's lives back in the day. I'm sorry you're all sad. I don't feel anything though.

I lived in California when Friends was winding down and for years afterwards in a place where many people knew him or socialized with him. I'm not humble-bragging. Anyone who went to parties and had money for drugs and alcohol could say the same thing. It was either that or do a lot of exercise and/or work all the time.

For me he represents a really ugly and depressing part of California culture. Privileged kids for whom drugs were everything. No interest in politics beyond drug laws. No hobbies beyond filling themselves with drugs and alcohol and staying up all night. No interest in anyone or anything. Mindless over-consumption of everything. The kind of men who treated women badly and built that ugly Britney Spears-era misogyny we've been hearing about this week.

People his age tend to see him as a victim and maybe he was. I know many like him and it's hard to see how they could have grown up to have meaningful lives when their parents had no time (because of an insane work culture) to parent and no one seemed to understand the dangers of all the substance abuse.

Honestly, though, I feel a bit of relief that he's gone. It has been a bit of a trip over the past couple of weeks to hear all the discussion about that Britney memoir. It's weird to realize I'm old enough now that the world has changed and I'm glad it has. It was an ugly time in the culture and this guy was a major part of it.

I was just reading them. People are commenting that the last chapter of his book was called Batman. Given his recent posts I wonder what that was about.

@topnoddy very tacky post

AlwaysGinPlease · 29/10/2023 07:50

I absolutely love FRIENDS and he was my favourite. I'm so sad. It's my go to show to comfort me and cheer me up.

There's another thread with some awful posts about him. Utter wankers , some trying to act so cool by claiming not to who he was, as if that matters, some saying there are more important things going on in the world so who cares about his death , as if we are only capable of caring about one thing at a time. Some just being vile about him.

It's times like this I hate this place.

What an odd post. I’ve never heard of him being labelled as unpleasant to women or anyone for that matter. There’s no suggestion he was out partying as a rich kid taking recreational drugs. He became addicted to a prescription opioid like millions of other Americans. Stop trying to blame people with addiction. It’s so wrong to frame addictions this way. I thought given the opioid crisis in the US people were beginning to view addicts differently. Sadly it can affect anyone at any age from any background. Whatever his cause of death it’s devastating for his friends and family.

Knitgoodwoman · 29/10/2023 07:52

@Antst did you actually know him though? He’s not to blame for an entire culture.

OopsaDazy's comment was not at all cruel. It's a forum and people are processing and discussing the news.

This was an incredibly privileged man who knew nothing but privilege all his life. He made no secret of caring about no one but himself. He was handed that role on a platter because his family has serious media connections and then he did zero for the rest of his life except choose to hurt those who loved him.

I feel sorry for his family and understand the upset from the public in terms of people feeling lost that an important figure from their youth is gone. @OopsaDazy is perfectly right though. For me it's strange that people chose to elevate such a selfish man.

davegrohll · 29/10/2023 07:55

Just saw this reported. How awful ! He was my favourite in friends, such a funny man. RIP Matthew
