The man who came to mend the leak in our roof also cleared and repositioned a downpipe.

Silkiefloof · 31/10/2023 16:26

Oh no Bizzey I hate that though at least you checked straight away and took pics. I hope they are fine about sending a new one or refunding.

Silkiefloof · 31/10/2023 16:28

That's good Lulu and welcome. I remember your lovely posts when I had cancer.

MrsLeonFarrell · 31/10/2023 16:34

I bought some lovely robin decorations today.

HildaTablet · 31/10/2023 17:22

Poor Floof, but then it’s probably his own fault for being too nosey. Hope you get the paint off OK, Silkie.

Great news about the final choice of venue MissC.

Bizzey, is there anything more annoying than an item of furniture arriving damaged? I’m suddenly reminded of my traumatic experience with the Cotswold Company and their decision to send the cabinet I’d already spent weeks arguing over (after a failed delivery, their total inability to reschedule, the impossibility of ringing them, etc etc) via a clueless carrier who stuck it in the back of his empty van with no padding or covering. At all. So it had to go straight back as it was so damaged. Fingers crossed your replacement arrives safely and quickly.

Our tortoise is getting ready for hibernation. He can barely be bothered to wake up in the morning but we switch on his heat lamp and stick him under it for a couple of hours, much to his irritation. He’ll be going off to sleep for the winter very soon, though.

MissConductUS · 31/10/2023 17:40

Welcome, @whatausername, @LuluBlakey1 and @MrsLeonFarrell, and thanks for sharing your combined calming and mundane news. I am pleasantly surprised to have three new posters in one morning.

WP has asked the venue to draw up a proposal and contract. I've texted her to ask if she can request not to have hard liquor included in the open bar, as none of us drink it, and they might be willing to give us a small reduction in price. I suspect they'll say no, but it doesn't hurt to ask.

D Brother and SIL have kindly offered to host us for Thanksgiving dinner, so I promptly accepted before they could change their mind. That's a relief. DD is spending Christmas with us and Thanksgiving with her fiancee's family, and it would have been daft to do a big dinner for just the three of us.

I love robin decorations Leon

Hope you can get that agreed MissC and lovely re Thanksgiving

Hilda Floof seemed totally unbothered by the paint like it was an extra part of him adding to his tabby looks - have got some of it off with soap and water. Trying to avoid a bath as he hates water. He was OK with that thought he was having a strange cuddle.

Off swimming now. Kitchen should be finished when we get back. Yay. Halloween here but they should avoid us as only do decorated houses.

DancesWithDucks · 31/10/2023 18:04

That sounds absolutely beautiful @MissConductUS ! Exquisite, even :)

Non-stop day but autistic older son, who can be a right little sod, is being absolutely lovely. He's started talking to me again, telling me he loves me, helpful around the house. It's delightful, and I'm enjoying every moment while it lasts.

HelenaJustina · 31/10/2023 21:23

Need to tip the teenager off my lap and go and finish cleaning the bathrooms…

sproutsandparsnips · 31/10/2023 21:29

That's fantastic Danceswithducks!
How annoying Bizzey!
I love tortoises Hilda, could you post a photo?
I think it's lovely to have Thanksgiving in the dreary days of November Miss, is it celebrated just as much as Christmas?
I have made my mincemeat, but that is all I have got done. I really need to get organised. I am off tomorrow and Thursday so will try and sort myself out as weather promises to be poor, so I may not manage my planned walk. I was admiring the beautiful leaf colours on my way into work and at its entrance there was such a beautifully coloured tree!

MissConductUS · 31/10/2023 21:35

Sprouts, Thanksgiving celebrations are almost universal in the U.S., and may be a bit more common as Christmas is a religious holiday and many Jewish people and Muslims don't celebrate Christmas at all.

Thanksgiving is more low key and less flashy than Christmas, partly because there's no gift giving involved, and the whole spirit of the day is to reflect and be grateful for what we have. I love Thanksgiving.

Ducks, enjoy the period of good behavior!

mathanxiety · 31/10/2023 21:48

I have become a big fan of Thanksgiving. It's a lovely holiday.

Ducks, my own Dcat once ran up a semi-prone DD3 and bit and tugged the ham out of a bite of a grilled ham and cheese sandwich she was eating, Roman style, on the couch. She was a little kitten at the time. Her love of food is undiminished.

Hallowe'en today - snow is blowing sideways and there are wind gusts of 30 mph. We had sleet too, about an hour ago. It's been quiet so far.

The impatiens have all drooped and wilted on the deck, and I think the leaves of the mulberry trees will all drop off overnight, which they did a few years ago too while still green, thanks to the hard freeze.

I'm going to make some lentil soup.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 31/10/2023 23:55

Dances, savour those lovely moments. 🩷
Bizzey, are you also getting cuddles from your teen?
Math, windy city weather for you! Feels too early though! 🥶

Had Havoc out at the park for some climbing etc to burn off some energy, but dc discovered some random toys in the sandbox, so settled in there instead. 🤦‍♀️
I asked: Havoc, Do you want to go on the slide. 😁
Tiny voice answer: No. 🤷‍♀️
When time to go dc was kicking and screaming to take toys with us, 😢.
All forgotten by the time we got to Costco for groceries. Forgot to buy a pumpkin to carve 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️. Will be handing out chocos for a couple hours then do a bit of trick or treating to a few neighbours. Havoc has a very cute and much loved costume, so it'll be fun. 😊🎃

Silkiefloof · 01/11/2023 00:11

Enjoy the cuddles Duck I have an asd DS, he was super cuddly before but not anymore, we used to previously call him the Mummy magnet as he was attached to me 24/7 when we were home together for years and the school kids called him teddy bear.

Back from swimming, 120 lengths done and kitchen is finished and boiler serviced.

Have a lovely time Havoc

DD said to me, our house is over 500 years old, can you imagine how many people have dropped dead in here. 🤔

LuluBlakey1 · 01/11/2023 00:20

Also, I made Bakewell tart flavoured flapjacks- with cherries, and ground almonds mixed in with the oats and a few drops of almond essence.

bizzey · 01/11/2023 01:53

I haven't had a cuddle for ages 😞🤔🤣!

DS 1 ( big boy now , lives in his own flat ) gives me a hug hello and a hug goodbye!

Ds2 ...well lucky to even speak to him with his working hours 😒🤣.

Ds3 ...yeah ..he is still my velcro child !

He hovers , trills, flaps , claps ..sways ,, .....ohhh hello Floof!
,🤣🤣

Charity collection coming in the morning.

The boys have already made me take most of it out !!

Ds1 (not living here)
Said keep it if there is space. 🤔🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️.

I said this house should be name the Tardis with the amount of stuff you all want me to keep ...
But no room for it ....but you all want a nice house !!!

Ohhh and I think I have been scammed or something on FB ?

3 real friends have messages me to say they have had friend requests from me
(Messaged other way )

bizzey · 01/11/2023 02:00

Friends across the pond...

So Thanksgiving is a meal , celebration, get together, without presents .

(So our Christmas,with presents ?)

What do you do on 24/25/26 th December?

Do you still do Christmas with presents?

Mumtobabyhavoc · 01/11/2023 02:34

Bizzey, Christmas here is probably a lot like yours. I suspect more lights/decorations here.
Christmas dinner, not lunch, but many have an earlier evening meal. Typical basic would be, turkey, stuffing or dressing cooked on the side, gravy, potatoes, another veg, cranberry sauce or jelly. Different cultures would do special dinner and many people I know who are not European decent also add a turkey and some sides to their own holiday special dishes.desserts could be anything. Egg nog and mulled wine are popular. It's very much oriented around just getting together with good food regardless of ethic/culture/religious backgrounds.
I make egg nog every year for us at home for Christmas Eve and then Christmas morning lattes and for gifts.

Fireworks are starting in the neighbourhoods now!!!!! 👻🎃

Mumtobabyhavoc · 01/11/2023 02:36

Oh, Boxing Day is also a holiday here, but not in the States as far as I know.

bizzey · 01/11/2023 03:37

Can't settle tonight and I have worked out a funny pattern.

This is not new...
I have been noticing it for a while.

My energy levels come monthly.
For about a week to 10 days...I am buzzing!

Then ...puffff ...nothing ..

( actually,, maybe only 7 days 🤣)

Why do I get this spurt of ommmph
now and then ?

Obviously no monthlies for me now...done that and finished 8/9years ago ....

Is it the moon cycles ? 🤔

No change in diet/food / drink / wine water or anything.

bizzey · 01/11/2023 03:42

Thank you Havoc .
I love hearing about other traditions

merrymelodies · 01/11/2023 03:49

Rocking my psycho-witch costume.

Only four lots of trick-or-treaters so far! That means more treats for me... 🤪

DancesWithDucks · 01/11/2023 10:26

@Silkiefloof I like your DD's breadth of thinking there :D I had an old house once, not as old as yours, but it was so strange to think that it had been built when people were still alive who were born during Shakespeare's life; it saw the American Revolution, the Napoleonic wars and Jane Austin, the Opium Wars, the Scramble for Africa, the opening up of Japan, Queen Victoria, WW1 and 2. The living room used to have cows in it in winter, and the families lived above it!

Dreadful for getting planning permission though for any work, even important stuff like the chimney falling down.

HildaTablet · 01/11/2023 11:23

Same with our house. I’ve done some tracing through Ancestry and it really brought it home looking on a census to find a woman living here with her 80-something mother - who would have been born when Mozart was alive.
@sproutsandparsnips tortoise is awake and I got him to do a close-up for you!

Come and tell me your dull and unexciting news 27: Calmly through the day

Mumtobabyhavoc · 01/11/2023 02:36

No, it's not. Most people have probably heard of it, but know nothing about it.

Havoc, our Christmas dinner is very similar to yours. A lot of people will have baked ham or a roast prime rib of beef instead of turkey, having just had turkey for Thanksgiving.

Ducks, our house was built in 1986, so it's still quite new. There are houses still standing in this area that date back to the colonial era. I used to attend a church that was built around 1760 and had French soldiers who fought in the American Revolution buried in the cemetary.

I have a dentist appointment at noon, so I am working from home today, a rarity for me.
