Hilda, I must call them sweet potatoes. I've read a bit about why we exchange the terms, but they definitely are sweet potatoes. 🤦‍♀️
😊
Dances, that sounds quite exhausting! Glad it got fixed, but a pox on the thief!!! 😈
Silkie, smash and grab thefts of all sorts are on the rise. It's crazy. Saw on the news last night an attempted home invasion by three people, one a woman, caught in owner's security camera. They couldn't break the door down, so walk off. The owner, a woman, was home and looked out window and they just shrugged at her. The one guy had some sort of gun, like shot gun. Happened in a small town. Frightening!

Havoc is obsessed with Halloween costume. Has just removed pj's as wants to put costume on. I've tried to explain it is dirty and that's why it is in the laundry. Havoc is undeterred and won't put it down. Oh, well. Whatever doesn't bring tears. ... 😹🤷‍♀️
It's currently 6c and cloudy. Rain supposed to start soon. Haven't got heat on, though. I'm strangely ok. Have had heated blankets on beds for a few weeks though. Can't believe it was 18c just a few days ago. Feels freezing outside!!!

MallardsMoorhensAndLethe · 24/10/2023 18:53

Tilllly you want valerian for sleep. Chamomile is for daytime.

I've been shopping in the sales. Got some cakes for Halloween.

Silkiefloof · 24/10/2023 19:24

Thanks Mallards I loved we bought a zoo.

Thanks Havoc I bet Havoc is cute in a Halloween costume.

No prizes for guessing which workmen didn't turn up today but have been assured they are coming tomorrow to finish the kitchen and that mastic man🙀is coming on Thurs and boiler service early next week. Painters are having 3 days off as half term and back on Friday.

Have been watching more of the programme on Chile on Disney and we have also cleared DSs rubbish out of the downstairs bathroom and the living room, rubbish goes there and never in the bin. The special collection still hasn't been collected but they have said it will be at some point. We never got round to the last 4 sacks so at least the delay means we've added one more sack, also put black bin out.

Ordered a couple more cakes from the bakers as DS loved them so much, which will get on Friday. Watched Below Deck Med.

Today I had yoghurt with granola and blueberries and a brie toasted sandwich and drinking lime juice with water. DD has been out playing frisbee with the school team.

DH read a post off his Instagram that blending fruit into smoothies makes you fat. I have been making smoothies (with ginger & spinach) for the last 2 years.
This is the latest SM food/nutrition "news" in a long line of them. I think that I should just do what my DM (93) has done - traditional English diet, no "formal" exercise, walking everywhere, no eating between meals.

MissConductUS · 24/10/2023 21:17

Welcome, @Ladyof2022, and thanks for sharing your news. Congratulations on your almost completed book. That's quite an accomplishment.

Havoc, I call the ones with the orange flesh sweet potatoes too. We only have them on Thanksgiving.

Silkie, I feel your pain re your DS's room. While my DS was in Boston for the weekend, I decided to hoover his room for the first time in months. I wound up with a pile of laundry to do, as clothes were strewn everywhere, and I had no idea what was clean and what was not.

Iwandered, Instagram is not a reliable source for anything, much less nutritional information. Fruit contains some natural sugars, but not enough to be a problem unless you eat it. Fruit is also a great source of digestive fiber and micronutrients.

We visited two venues today with the WP. One was lovely, but we would just be renting the space, so would need to bring in a caterer. That is certainly doable, and in some ways is an advantage as we wouldn't be stuck with whatever menu choices an inn or hotel has to offer.

The other is an old abbey that was sold by the order when they ran out of sisters. It's been converted into an inn, restaurant, and event space. It was lovely and had great views, but the "ballroom" is the old church sanctuary. So it's a long, narrow space and a bit dark. That's where the tables would be set up for dinner. It's also just barely big enough for the number of guests we anticipate.

The WP is going to talk to DD about the options Thursday evening, and we're going to give her our input tomorrow.

I love sweet potatoes Havoc, don't think I've had yams

Mallard, what's valerian?

My Godson drove 4 hours to see me today 😊

sproutsandparsnips · 24/10/2023 22:33

That soup sounds delicious Havoc
In truly mundane news I must put an overnight towel wash on tonight.....

Bugger

Meant to do same

CBAd to get out of bed now

Mumtobabyhavoc · 24/10/2023 22:57

I should clarify soup recipe:
sweet potatoes (2-3) chopped (the orange ones!) 😁
Fresh ginger (about a 1" piece, sliced)
1/2 white onion, chopped
Salt, Chinese 5 spice, cardamom, nutmeg
bit of each, then taste for seasoning once cooked and adjust to your palate
I use 1tsp salt, 1/4 Tsp 5 spice and 1/8 tsp of other two to start
1c orange split lentils, package says yellow lentils, though
water to cover
bring to boil and cook until potatoes are soft
stir occasionally
lentils creates thick consistency
blend with immersion blender or cool and puree in blender (be careful!)
Add a can of full fat regular coconut milk (cooking kind, not drinking kind)
blend/stir to combine, simmer and taste for seasoning.
*
variations
curry powder to season instead
chilli powder for some heat if you like
dollop of sour cream when serving with finely chopped chives/green onion or fresh chilli or combo
croutons to top
add in some chunks of squash to cooking pot, ie acorn squash, maybe tey wirh jyst acorn squash...🤔
You could skip lentils, just something I add for extra nutrition

make as thick or thin as you like
use your imagination and experiment!
I hope you'll post if you try to make this!

Sprouts, I need to do some laundry, too.
Tilly, how sweet to have a visit with godson.
Miss, hang in there re planning!

MallardsMoorhensAndLethe · 25/10/2023 01:51

Valerian is a herb Tilllly. You can get it in tea or in other forms if you want it stronger. Will help you sleep. Chamomile will help calm you but that's all.

Tilllly · 25/10/2023 04:15

I'll look today Mallard, thanks

Silkiefloof · 25/10/2023 08:28

DD does that with her clothes MissC Its the floordrobe. I just leave her to it with that and eventually it annoys her so she clears it before it restarts. Her daily Vinted parcels don't help. But she's very good generally and does her own washing and some of her cooking as she is veggie.

Interesting re the wedding options. Would be interesting to see what food could be brought in though its more work.

Love a homemade soup Havoc French soups are much more watery than ours though and prefer the British ones like leak and potato or blue cheese and broccoli though love French onion soup and veg soup and a good creamy tomato soup.

I don't think fruit makes you fat Iwandered though there can be quite a lot of calories in smoothies and drinks you don't think about.

Can hear the rubbish lorries outside and this is the second one so maybe the rubbish and special collection have gone, will need to check. Sometimes its a building work lorry which sounds similar though don't think there's any house renovations apart from us at the moment.

Hoping kitchen guy actually appears today. I did send quite a firm e-mail. I feel mean but it will never get finished otherwise.

HildaTablet · 25/10/2023 08:35

The soup sounds delicious Havoc.

Silkie, I feel the kitchen guys are taking the proverbial now. Why is it so hard to get work people men to put the essential last touches to building jobs? It happens so often.

sueelleker · 25/10/2023 08:45

If you've got cats, prepare to have a nose in your cup/mug. Valerian attracts some cats like catnip does others.

DancesWithDucks · 25/10/2023 12:52

That recipe sounds absolutely delicious.

It's cold here too today, proper Manchester (England) weather; the rain's settled in like a wet blanket over everything. Even the ducks are sitting under the overhang to stay dry. Need to get straw into their pen soon, the temperatures are dropping. They were too small to go outside last year (autumn hatched) so they spent the winter in our living room in a pen, which made for an interesting talking point when friends came to eat.

WmFnKdSg1234 · 25/10/2023 13:29

I am reading this book. I treat myself to at least half a dozen books which are on a prize list. Have absolutely loved my choices this year.

Lots of rain here where I am, lots of flooding on the country lanes I use to get to work.

Tonight I am off out to meet a friend for a meal. She's a tendency to arrive late, if she does I will be eating my meal alone as I have decided not to entertain her tardiness!

Silkiefloof · 25/10/2023 15:15

Kitchen guy is here and working well but he says the extractor fan is the wrong size. He says we need to get one that's 59cms - they are all 60cms like the cooker. His answer to that keep looking. Its frustrating as we bought that 2 months ago so too late to return it and they started kitchen end August. Also saying wrong screws to put back one socket. But at least things are getting done.

Silkiefloof · 25/10/2023 18:45

Kitchen guy is just leaving now or trying to, DH keeps chatting to him. DH is always totally unaware when someone wants to leave.

Its not finished but at least a day's work has been done on it and they have taken a lot of their stuff. I think there's some issue with a light switch now, the extractor hood issue where they are telling us to get a different size which doesn't appear to exist and the tiles need cutting where the feet are and a tiny bit more painting. And mastic man is coming tomorrow.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 25/10/2023 20:43

Silkie, you inspired me with your sandwich the other day! 😛😛😛
Rosemary olive oil bread, cheddar & mozza, sliced apple in between.

We have a gorgeous bit of snow on the north shore mtns today! Yea! And... it's sunny!!! 😎

DancesWithDucks · 25/10/2023 20:46

It sounds like progress then @Silkiefloof though there's always a few thorns aren't there!

IWanderedLonely · 25/10/2023 21:43

Just had a look on Chat for a Halloween spooky story thread and can't find one. Sad
I love a spooky story.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 25/10/2023 22:27

Hilda, it seems the norm for trades here, too. I had an awful time for several months with contractors last year; had to hire new to re-do work; and then new crew became as issue. 😡
It seems pride and being conscientious no longer exist in work. 🤷‍♀️
(Note I do a lot of puttering at home learning via YouTube; it's maddening when a pro does worse work than me!)

MallardsMoorhensAndLethe · 26/10/2023 02:25

Silkie glad they finally came back to do stuff. Why aren't they sourcing the extractor fan, surely that's their job? Them when they can't find one they'll have to come up with a new solution for making what you have fit.

Havoc I've been there with professional doing worse work than I could myself even though I don't really know what I'm doing. It totally sucks that those people exists. Sandwich looks great though!

Wandered have you tried the Paranormal section of the forum? Maybe someone has put a ghost stories in there.

I've made ginger cake today and ate it warm.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 26/10/2023 02:37

Mmmm, ginger cake...😋😋😋😋😋😋

IWanderedLonely · 26/10/2023 11:27

Thanks Havoc - just checked, but nothing new on there. There always used to be one every October in chat. Sad
