When does terrorism become war?

mids2019 · 07/10/2023 09:19

Looking at the news this morning I think the media are finding it difficult to register Palestinian attacks as a terrorism event or simply an attack of one state against another.

I suppose whether you view 5000 tickets as a terrorist atrocity or a declaration of war is dependent on your views on whether Palestine can ever be a functioning state. We plainly in Europe would describe such events as terrorism in that civilian populations have been targeted but in the eternally challenged middle East the use of such a word has political connurtations.

Is this a terrorist attack on Israel?

If you read my posts, you will see that I condemn the actions against civillians.

You will also see that I can understand that for some people who feel they are being oppressed, they can only see such actions as the only way to get Governments to change.

Do you understand that someone who feels like they have nothing to lose will do anything to get something to change?

You can condemn the actions. But do you understand that some people feel like they have nothing to lose?

(And it is possible to understand that some people feel like they have nothing to lose and also to condemn the actions that they do)

You sound like an apologist for war crimes.

You either condemn them or you don't. You repeatedly tell us how much you empathise with those committing war crimes.

I don't. Nor do most normal people. That's how we differ.

Honestly - I lost dozens of my family in the Holocaust, and no, I've never felt the slightest desire to go and murder a bunch of Germans in revenge. Normal people grieve for what happened - they don't seek to continue the bloodshed.

Stop being an apologist for war crimes.

unless you are in full support of Israel, you will be deemed anti-Semitic

Its looking that way isn’t it.

@Truthisbetterthanlies I have not seen one person condoning these actions but there have also been plenty of questionable actions from the Israeli side over the years. It isn't as simple as Israel - bad and Palestine - good or vice versa. Just because you can sympathise with Palestinians it doesn't mean you condone any actions that occurred today. You can condemn actions but understand these actions are part of a way wider picture that just today.

I do believe that Palestinians are being oppressed by the Israeli state but I also believe it isn't as simple an answer as just giving land back - this isn't realistic and as people have mentioned this history goes way further back than 1948. I don't think any solutions put forward by either side have been good enough and if I'm completely honest I'm not even sure there is an solution at this point - which is so sad for any civilian who lives in Israel or Palestine!

"I have not seen one person condoning these actions"

Read the bloody thread then. It's full of them.

The modern state of Israel was set up as a Jewish homeland. As you know millions were killed in a genocide because they were Jewish. Being able to live anywhere without the threat of anti-Semitism and the further threat of genocide was the aim. Tell me what is wrong with that?

There is mpthing wrong with Jewish people living freely on their territory.

There is somethong wrong with Palestianian territories being stoeln and annexed and laws depriving Palestinians from their right being voted.

What a load of bollocks. Show me any post in this thread that has said anything like this.

Just be honest and admit that you have no problem with war crimes when they take place against Israeli civilians.

And yes - we WILL judge you.

incywincyspiders · 07/10/2023 15:19

@Truthisbetterthanlies you conveniently skipped over my sentence where I have said you can understand why these actions are happening but still condemn them. This is what @cakeorwine is also saying. You are accusing people of being war crime apologists 😐

No it isn't. You're just putting words in people's mouths and attacking them if they're not fully in support of your opinion.

People have said again and again that violence against civilians is wrong, but you are consistently accusing them of condoning that very thing.

This is a report from Amnesty International on Israel

Israel's apartheid against Palestinians - Amnesty International

which has been repeatedly debunked by people who know what they’re taking about.

so many people on this thread have no issue with Israel committing war crimes against the Palestinians. That’s Islamophobia.

No one has condoned war crimes against the Israelis. But so many are condoning war crimes against Palestinians.

you have double standards

You clearly can't read.

I said I condemn the actions.

I also said that I can understand that some people see targetting civillians as a way of getting change.

Do you know about the King David's Hotel in Jerusalem?

91 people were killed when Jewish "terrorists" blew it up - as part of the British occupation back then. Including 13 soldiers.

The Jewish insurgency is interesting to read

incywincyspiders · 07/10/2023 15:23

@Truthisbetterthanlies you clearly have your own agenda and don't want to listen to anyone else is saying. You refuse to acknowledge that there have been horrendous atrocities from both sides of this conflict.

My heart goes out to all the Israeli citizens AND Palestinian citizens and once again reiterate the point that it is not anti-Semitic to disagree with the Israeli government.

delphi13 · 07/10/2023 15:24

It's a pretty desperate situation. I feel very sad about it for both the Israeli's and the Palestinians for what will inevitably hit the, in response. I was on Kibbutz nr Gaza quite some time ago, the Kibbutz I was on has been invaded and people taken hostage from there. A number of other Kibbutz's have suffered the same. These are just every day people.

That said I totally understand the Palestinian perspective, they have had their country taken over and it's encroachment continues. I don't agree with violent action but then I don't know how they can stop the way Israel treats them.

I remember clearly the soon to be army recruits staying on Kibbutz for a month before they started their mandatory service. They gleefully told us they couldn't wait to join up to shoot some Palestinians. I thought at the time, I can't see how this will get better when both sides are brought up to hate each other.

I'm just so sick of people in power stirring up conflict. That goes for both sides because for sure, the Israeli government is no stranger for starting problems themselves.

When is war terrorism?
When is a military act terrorism?
When is a terrorist a freedom fighter?

Who gets to define it?

It's interesting when you go to other countries and read their history, see their plaques and see how they describe history

One man’s terrorist is another man’s freedom fighter. It totally depends on where you live and your nationality.
Israel have been occupying Palestine for many many years, they won’t rest until Palestine has been obliterated from the map. If civilians are being killed and injured ( which they are) they are both terrorists. You will obviously read the western media side of all this who are of course, totally pro-Israeli.

incywincyspiders · 07/10/2023 15:24

@ADiT preach!!!

DownNative · 07/10/2023 15:27

I don't think @mids2019 intention was to have a thread where people are pro and anti Israel/Palestine here.

Seems to me they wanted to discuss the issue of terrorism which inevitably means international law, domestic law and the international community relations.

Nearly every person commenting here has ZERO direct experience of terrorism, security and counter-terrorism. That explains the lack of proper debate/discussion.

Agree with you that both Hamas' refusal to allow elections in Gaza and the Palestinian Authority's refusal to allow elections in the West Bank is very hard on the Palestinians.

It is a tragedy that Palestinians living in the Palestinian territories are not allowed to vote by their governments.

Also agree with you that there is something very wrong with the way that LGBT Palestinians have no rights and are murdered, and that women's rights in both Gaza and the West Bank are so poor.

And of course the apartheid and ethnic cleansing practised in the Palestinian Territories, which make it illegal to sell land there to Jews, and which has greatly reduced the number of Palestinian Christians living there, is also a disgrace.

Oh no - that wasn't what you meant was it? Because of course you don't give a shit about Palestinian rights unless you can use it to attack Israel.

*@Truthisbetterthanlies

What's your view on innocent Palestinian people, including children, being murdered by the IDF? Or being driven from their homes?

You accuse anyone who shows any sympathy for the Palestinians' plight of "not giving a shit" about Israeli civilians being attacked (even though many posters including me have said it's horrific and absolutely wrong).

But you don't seem like you have much sympathy for Palestinians who have been suffering for decades. Why is that?

Any answer to this @Truthisbetterthanlies ?

Or will you claim it's antisemitic to even ask?

incywincyspiders · 07/10/2023 15:28

Actually, I think no one commenting here would want to live in Palestine as rights for women/gays/etc are non existent, and gays are definitely murdered for being gay.

I'd be more worried about having no rights and people evicting me from my land or killing me but the right to not become gay if I wanted to would be a close second for sure!
