Golly that first thread was interesting. Some really tragic cases though, and I hope all those involved find some sort of peace.

BodegaSushi · 05/09/2023 12:23

Is there a link to the first one?

Mimmy352 · 05/09/2023 12:25

Hey! Thanks for starting a new thread @GrandTheftWalrus. Saves me the trouble haha!

Hey! Thanks for starting a new thread @GrandTheftWalrus. Saves me the trouble haha!

No worries. It wasn't until I went to link that I noticed it got it wrong. Hopefully won't put people off.

Anyway mine is the 2 girls who got lost hiking, people say it was an accident and they were using the phone flash to get out, if so, why were there pictures missing from the camera roll?

@GrandTheftWalrus Those photos are some of the scariest things I’ve ever seen! Some people say they can see someone in one of them, and the theory is it might be whoever deleted the photos

GrandTheftWalrus · 05/09/2023 12:45

I spent hours looking at the photos. And I'm ashamed I can't remember the girls names, Lisa was maybe one?

I can't believe it's almost 10 years since they vanished, seems like it happened more recently than that.

I would like to know what really happened with Esther Dingley. There was lots of stuff going on in her personal life, it looked like her travelling lifestyle was coming to an end - so did she fall by accident or did she choose a beautiful spot to never come back from as she hadn't taken enough food with her for a long hike or taken the expected route. I guess it will never be known. There were some interesting discussions on the sleuthing forum at the time.

Other mysteries that have stuck with me are Claudia Lawrence, and I can't remember the exact details, but I read about a toddler boy who was out hiking somewhere in the US with his family who ran ahead just out of sight and was never seen again.

Little Eloise Worledge in Australia in the 70s.

Joanne Ratcliffe and Kirste Gordon. Likely abducted by the same man who abducted the Beaumont's, and like them never found.

Mr Cruel.

Baby Rahma El-Dennaoui in 2005

5 year old Renee Aitkin in 1984
Rhianna Barreau

Hailey Dodd

Baby Lisa Irwin in the USA.

Lars Mittank

So many lost souls and so many children.

I posted this on p38 of the last thread. I'm going to repost it here in case anybody else remembers it.

I remember ages ago reading about a baby girl in America, who went missing. Maybe in the 80s / 90s but possibly later.

Her parents were sharing a house with a lady with learning disabilities, who could apparently live semi-independently provided the baby's parents gave this lady a little help with certain tasks. This lady asked if she could take the baby out for a walk in her pram. Her parents said yes. She took the baby for a walk, but returned with an empty pram.

She couldn't / wouldn't tell the parents where their baby was. The police searched a nearby lake. They didn’t find anything. Last I heard it was an unsolved case but now I can't find anything about it on Google. Maybe because of data protection laws or something. But does this case ring any bells for anyone?

AcesBaseballbat · 05/09/2023 14:22

I personally believe there's at least a good chance the Panama girls met with foul play, but I read that the missing photo was explained as being a known software glitch with that particular brand of camera. I don't know if that's true or not, but I don't think the missing photo is a smoking gun. The photo couldn't be permanently deleted from the camera itself, only via connecting the camera to a computer, and there's a theory online about the killer taking the camera back to where the girls were staying, connecting it to the computer there to delete the photo, and then putting it back in the jungle. Which seems fairly implausible.

Thanks to whoever posted about Karen Howells, the case stuck with me for years. I always wondered why it didn’t get more publicity - a safe suburban street on a quiet Sunday afternoon, why did they have to burn her body - and in front of her child?

Reminds me of another case that just sticks with me - Joy Hewer a quiet Christian woman, also murdered then a set alight.

The unsolved murder of schoolteacher Joy Hewer - murdermap

Joy Hewer, 52, was stabbed and sexually assaulted at her own home on 17 October 1995. The retired primary school teacher was found dead after police and firefighters were called to a blaze at the sixth floor flat in St David’s Court, off Parkstone Road...

I didn't read the first thread so might have already been mentioned, but Kate Bushell.

On the subject of unsolved crimes, I remember years ago reading about what was called the Tunbridge Wells Bedsit Murders, just horrific- two young girls attacked and killed in their homes. It really bothered me as I lived in places like this - dodgy rentals with not great security and dark doorsteps.

Years passed without hearing about it and I thought it would never be solved, one day my eyes popped out of my head when I read one line in a newspaper about how an arrest had been made. It was David Fuller, later found to have attacked hundreds of women in a hospital mortuary and filmed it. He had killed Wendy and Caroline before the job at the morgue gave him easy access to women’s bodies.

So, I feel there is always hope. Cold cases are solved even decades later, but how families exist without ever knowing what happened is so tragic.

I remember a friend of my dad's talking about Cliff Richard and his involvement and this was 30 years ago when he was really adored so doesn't surprise me at all. There was a lot on MN about Elm House years ago, all very horrifying.

"a friend of my dad's talking about Cliff Richard and his involvement and this was 30 years ago"

Oh well. Case closed m'lud 🙄

Lwrenagain · 05/09/2023 15:11

@MrsPelligrinoPetrichor it's terrifying 💔

My mum worked with baby's removed from single mothers in the 60s and she explained to me that you could literally show up, pick a baby and leave with them the next day, providing the nun liked you.

Shows how disposable kiddos were and its really not that long ago.

Roll your eyes if you want. Other than a very dodgy list of names of very dubious provenance there's not a shred of evidence that Cliff Richard had any involvement in the goings-on at Elm Guest House.

He does have very, very keen lawyers though. And very deep pockets.

I think the above comments about two people who are still alive could be harmful to Mumsnet and I’ve reported them.
