Whether it’s personal or well known, which unsolved case makes your brain sound like dial up?

Ames Glover who disappeared on 5 February 1990 at the age of five months from the back seat of his father's car in west London. No trace of him has ever been found. He was taken the same day as Alexandra Griffith's, who was stolen from a new born baby ward and was found by police.

This is shocking and I’ve never heard about it before. Why is this not as known as Madelaine McCann?
Oh Ames was a black boy with African connections. That will explain it 😭

SemperIdem · 03/09/2023 17:42

Richard Marlow, who disappeared from outside his home in Ontario age 9, in 1944.

It just seems so sad that there probably would be nobody who even remembers him alive now.

There have been suggestions that Nicola Payne was a victim of Fred West. Apparently there's evidence he was working in Coventry at the time. Could just be people clutching at straws though and I do hope, for her sake it wasn't true.

Although thinking of the Wests, I wonder how many of these missing persons will later be found to be the victims of an as-yet unknown serial killer. Just occurred to me that there was a huge publicity campaign for Lucy Partington in the 70s when she disappeared but she wasn't found until they dug up Cromwell Street in the 90s. Along with those other poor women who, heartbreakingly, didn't have the same public interest at the time of their disappearances, presumably because their families weren't rich or middle class enough to generate it. But anyway ' if there had been a 70s MN, I imagine Lucy Partington's name would have been mentioned a fair few times.

Oddly chilling.

Interesting theory about FW. I've never heard it.

The recent-ish Amazon Prime documentary on Nicola was exclusively gunning for the 2 local nere-do-wells being responsible.

Unless FW was staking Nicola out whilst living in her estate and watching her comings and goings, and perhaps known to her enough to offer a lift, I doubt he's responsible for Nicola's disappearance and murder as a random pick-up where he would offer lifts to lone women at bus stops and then kidnap them. The chances of him passing her on her estate road when she was making her short journey through would be so small. Wouldn't they?

Any idea what car he was driving around the time he could have been working locally?

LollipopChaos · 03/09/2023 17:49

Gerry Largay - the lady walking the Appalachian Trail... She went into a bush to have a wee and ended up getting lost and was found years later. Never understood how on earth this tragic situation happened.

Sloth66 · 03/09/2023 17:50

Martin Allen aged 15 , but looked younger, in November 1979.
He vanished from the London Underground, seen with a man who was telling him not to run. Vanished, no trace ever found.

All of them have been mentioned so far but all of the children ones play on my mind a lot. Some of them could perhaps been avoided but a lot of them were really awful.

The Sodder children...2 not accounted for. The ladder missing, the water button empty, the car engines not working (I think that's right) It seems as dodgy as anything and why were no remains found? Didn't the police try and pass off a cow heart as a human? If so, why? A cover up, laziness?

The Beaumont children. One child going missing is understandable, 3 all together not so much. Did they all go somewhere together willingly? If so, why did none of them think it wasn't a good idea? I kind of stick to the safety in numbers and think if my 2 are together they fare better than a single child. One of them would surely raise the alarm if something didn't seem right.

In terms of Madeline Mccan? Was this the first night the kids were unattended? How did someone know the doors were unlocked? Luck? Scoping the place out?

Andrew Godsen I feel got an offer to meet someone in London and from there either met a grisly end or changed identity.

Asha Degree I feel like was meeting someone or running away from an awful home life. I can't imagine many content kids choosing to leave the house in the middle of the night (in a storm?) for no reason.

Nothing Donaghue was definitely some kind of cover up. Wasn't he found naked in a storm drain? How did he get there? Why was he naked? Suicide? I just don't think many young teenagers commit suicide.

3 at ds's school sadly.

Frequency · 03/09/2023 17:54

I'd never heard of Asha Degree before. I've just read up on it. How utterly tragic. I don't understand why the motorists who spotted her didn't call it in at the time. I know one of them tried to help her but they didn't report until the next day.

I watch Missing 411. I read somewhere (can't remember where, sorry) that some experts believe many of them can be attributed to open mine shafts. There was a map marking known mine shafts and the disappearances did seem to be clustered in these areas.

The one where the little boy vanished suddenly while his father and older brother were only a few feet away and he was only sight for a matter of seconds - falling down a mine shaft would explain that otherwise why did not hear him crying if he was snatched by a predator or find him if he simply wandered off?

The Sodder children is the mystery that gets me. Too many things stand out as odd for it to have been an accidental fire that killed the children.

back in 2003.

DeOrr Kuntz JR.
Is one from America that's really weird.
They all failed lie detector except the granddad's friend who was brought on the trip as a fall guy.

I don't think the child made it to the camping site.
The clothes he was wearing when he disappeared where found back in the apartment.
Parents are sketchy as fuck.

ChocolateCinderToffee · 03/09/2023 18:05

I saw a programme about spontaneous combusion in about 1990 and essentially it said that there had been a heat source in every case case, so it was assumed that the fire started from that.

Yes, I agree with you- it's very far fetched! The Wests certainly must be responsible for way more deaths than they were charged with, but I agree with you fully on this one.

dottiedodah · 03/09/2023 18:07

Susie Lamplugh was covered by DM .There was a theory that she had been seeing a married man.got uncomfortable with the situation and was meeting up to tell him it was over .Andrew Gosden was a very clever Student and had been to a Summer Camp for talented Students ,maybe met someone there who may have groomed him?Penny Bell .She was in the car with her neighbour , When he left her she was fine he said .They were having an affair he alleged, though her husband said they were happy and there were no problems .He was living with a guy in a RL before he married Penny .All very odd . Worst thing she was flashing her lights and mouthing "help" yet no one did anything! Obv no mobiles then of course .Her poor DD was told to leave the home in her teens as her dad "couldnt cope" with her reminding him of Penny. She has appealed many times for information .Penny was murdered broad daylight in a swimming pool car park!

Why anyone who is not a rich, white male votes Tory. They hate women almost as much as they hate the working class.

That's awful. In my head I just can't see under 16s thinking about it but I did live a very sheltered life without being too innocent. It would never have occurred to me and my friends (I don't think) so young.

As a parent the world is scary.

Yes, poor Richey is more a tragedy than a mystery. I'm from very near where he was and a huge Manics fan, I've looked into this a lot over the years. There's a lot of circumstantial evidence that he jumped. A taxi driver reported that at around the time we can trace his movements to the Severn Bridge area, he picked up a "young man, about 5"7, very thin, with dark curly hair and eyes" who spoke with a "Welsh accent that occasionally slipped into Scottish". The young man asked him to drive him around several places near where Richey grew up, then let him out relatively near the bridge, at which point he overpaid, hugely, and told the driver to keep the change.

I admit its crossed my mind why the driver didn't call someone, but I guess this was before the days of mobiles/home internet etc and he probably had other calls.

There was a book written with the cooperation of his sister that eludes to him having staged the disappearance and is actually on a kibbutz in Israel.

Larry Murphy now living in the uk responsible for most of these disappearances it's suspected. Uk police have been told what he's capable of.

In London it seems and working in construction.
He has changed his name according to the Sun a few days ago.

The mysterious death of Anthony Kostiw. All very underhand and dodgy I suspect. Police were the last people to see him, body cameras turned off & requested a change of clothes when they returned to the station

You’d be appalled by the statistics. Aside from those, there was at least 1 suicide a year when I was in school. I knew at least 2 of them.

The suicide rate (worldwide or in America, I’m not sure) was higher than the murder rate for young teenagers in 2021. Apparently 12 suicides of youths occur each day. Suicide rates doubled after the introduction of social media*

*I am not saying social media is to blame, but it has been proven to have just as much negative impact as positive on people. I personally think it doubled partly because of comparison leading to low self esteem, but also bullying became constant, bad news was everywhere, etc.

I live very near the place he was last seen. There used to be posters up about him on lampposts for several years, appealing for information. Haven't seen one in ages. Poor man.

LovelyIssues · 03/09/2023 18:30

@idontwanttoplayanymore I thought the police had gathered it was the Dad in the end? He was a convicted peadophile and alcoholic, he was found dead.

LovelyIssues · 03/09/2023 18:30

@ritaqueenofspeed

I also live in MK. It's awful. Definitely a cover up
