Whether it’s personal or well known, which unsolved case makes your brain sound like dial up?

@Allthecatsandcosyblankets that video footage of her in the lift is really disturbing isn't it? It's like someone was talking to her but there was no one there! Freaky.

Phoebe Handsjuk - yes. Awful way to die, apparently she survived the initial fall and bled to death at the end of the garbage chute. She'd told her psych that Hampel was verbally abusive and left him multiple times, he had a subsequent girlfriend who also died - apparently by suicide - hours after they broke up.

That's...quite the history.

I mean, I'm not saying he did it (although no one can figure out how she got in the chute and no one has been able to recreate it as though she did it herself), but that is a heck of a run of luck. Baillee Schneider was ruled not suspicious, her parents fought to get it investigated further: https://www.theage.com.au/national/victoria/coroner-finds-baillee-schneider-death-was-self-inflicted-after-break-up-20200616-p552y1.html

I think that may have been the A3 crash, SecretShambles, unless there are two very similar stories.

Yes. A3 not A23!

This is quite an interesting ‘unresolved’ case - she has been declared a victim of the 9/11 attacks at the world trade centre, but there is no hard evidence that she was actually there:

Sophie Toscan du Plantier
Of course there is a suspect who has been convicted in France but I wish to god that there was some incontrovertible evidence in Ireland that would prove who did it.

He’s living in plain sight in the community.

It isn’t a mystery sadly she was not taking her antipsychotic medication and relapsed what was shown on the cctv footage was her having a psychotic episode

we don’t know why she climbed into the water talk but likely to be she felt she was being followed as we can see on the footage

I agree, the case is very sad but not really a mystery.

It became so famous partly because of the very eerie lift footage, but I saw a pretty convincing hypothesis about this on Reddit. They went through her actions in detail - the gist was that the bottom button in the lift was a hold button that locked the door open for a minute (for staff unloading things, etc.), not the button for the ground floor. Elisa didn't realise this, and didn't know why the lift wasn't closing. She looked out to see if someone was holding the lift, kept trying the lock button, randomly pressed buttons for other floors, and stepped into the doorway and gestured to try and trigger the door. Watching the footage with this in mind, it makes a lot of sense.

@PinkPondQueen , I agree , there are so many unanswered questions about the Clydach murders .

The case of Elisa Lam who was found dead in a water tank on a ship always freaked me out as well, especially the footage of her in the lift running from something 😳 so scary

She wasn’t on a ship, wasn’t this the one in the hotel in LA? There was a Netflix documentary about it

Kate Bushell - teenage girl killed by a knife wound to the neck whilst walking a dog. 26 years later and still no one caught.

Corrie Mckeague - military man disappears into a dead end road, by some wheelie bins, never seen again. They believe the climbed in a bin and then was killed when the bin was emptied into the rubbish truck the next day, however no body has ever been found and there is no proof he even went into the bin. He just vanished.

Richey Edwards - where is he? What happened? I like to believe he is out there somewhere happy and living his best life. Sadly I think he went into the Severn and is dead.

Kate Bushell is one that is close to home for me....I was newly married at the time and within a short vicinity (a few minutes walk) of where Kate walked the dog. It was horrific how she died and some details were kept out of the press.
The whole atmosphere in the Exwick area of Exeter was depressing & dark beacuse what had happened to poor Kate.
Huge police prescence too - we all had the police visit door to door, and voluntarily gave DNA samples via swabs. I was interviewed in one room whilst my husband was interviewed in another. It was the same for all the local community.
There was someone questioned numerous times. I have it on fairly good authority the police are aware of who committed the crime, but it's a case of lack of evidence.....

Not read full thread so don’t know if it’s been mentioned but MH370 - despite claims that parts of it have washed up they are not definitive. The poor relations of those souls on board.

Suzy Lamplugh.

SuddenlyOld · 03/09/2023 16:15

Marie Wilkes has always scared me, 7mo pregnant, car breaks down, abducted and murdered while she was phoning for help from the sos phone on the motorway. And her 11yo sister and baby nephew were left in the car. This is the reason the rescue services have to prioritise lone women who break down.

Still a bit unsolved because iirc the guy imprisoned for it was pardoned years later. Also something to do with a police officer covering up a mistake he made

Suzy Lamplugh's parents have passed away now. Her case always sticks in my mind: she lived in the same road in Putney as some friends of mine, and up until 18 months before she disappeared, I worked as a negotiator, too. I used to do viewings with male buyers all the time and it never occurred to me to think it might be risky.

Iirc, the police think she was probably murdered by a man called John Cannan who is currently in prison for rape and/or murder, but iirc he'll be eligible for parole some time soon

Yes, John Cannan murdered Shirley Banks. My best friend worked with her and they were friends. She phoned in sick the next morning after disappearing the night before after going shopping. He was holding her in his flat and forced her to ring in to her work and I remember my friend telling me Shirley hadn't come in that day which was really unusual.

He should never be let out, it seems like yesterday he murdered Shirley. My friend was traumatised with it all.

He was also a multiple rapist and I imagine he murdered Suzy Lamplugh too. He had tried many times to abduct women.

The disappearance of Corrie McKeague is the one I think of often. Although there is a very strong suspicion that he fell asleep drunk in a rubbish bin - which is just so tragic.

I get that he probably got into a relatively clean large wheelie bin full of cardboard for recycling and went to sleep. He may have asphyxiated in his sleep but I don't get how the police didn't find his body in the tip after the millions that were spent searching it.

Even if it had been scavenged by animals, some trace of him or his clothing would have remained but there was literally nothing.

I do wonder if he did a bunk deliberately.

The Wembley Point mystery. A smartly dressed woman went to the 21st floor of the building, had a coffee and cigarette by a window, then jumped from the window to her death. She left behind an oil painting along with a few other bits and pieces. This was in 2004 and she still hasn't been identified. Not really scary, just very strange.

The Wembley Point mystery: who was the woman who jumped to her death?

One October morning in 2004, a woman took the lift to the 21st floor of an office block in north-west London, bought a coffee in the cafe there – then opened a window and jumped out. No one knew who she was. Do they now?

Quite a few women have gone missing in the east of Ireland over several decades. In some there are strong suspects but incompetence from the Gardai meant no convictions.

In others, it’s a total mystery:

  • Deirdre Jacob went to a village bank in Co Kildare to pay for her nursing accommodation in London and was never seen again; presume murdered
  • Jojo Dullard: hitchhiking to Wicklow and went missing on the final leg
  • Annie McCarrick: an American living in Dublin who went hiking and wnt missing, now presumed murdered.

I guess women go missing all the time and are murdered but Ireland is a small country where people tend to know everyone around. How these things happen and no-one knows anything is a mystery.

They are all neighbouring counties I remember an radio presenter talking about a serial killer years ago.

Larry Murphy now living in the uk responsible for most of these disappearances it's suspected. Uk police have been told what he's capable of.

I'm sorry for this absolutely horrible question. But if he did fall into farm machinery designed to mince animal carcasses, does that mean his body would have ended up mixed into meat products?

I'm sorry, the idea is unbelievably distressing, but that seems to be inevitable if it's what happened.

It would be machinery designed to harvest crops not to mince animals.

He managed to disappear in one of the busiest streets in Dublin.
With the yards and journalists following him.

I watched the Unsolved Mysteries series on Netflix and the first episode of season 1 still has me absolutely baffled (Rey Rivera) - Mystery on the Rooftop. I just really hope one day it's solved as it's such an odd one

YouTube has nearly all of the older series. Robert Stack’s stint was my favorite, and it was lovely seeing some of the more positive updates, but so scary to see how many quite old cases were still unsolved even now

The river seems likelier. Poor boy could wash away without a trace.
