Whether it’s personal or well known, which unsolved case makes your brain sound like dial up?

The Ugly Tuna bar (where Brian Shaffer vanished) had four separate exits, including backstage exits with no CTTV. This is very easily proven by looking at blueprints of the building online or looking at comments online from people who live/lived in the area. The whole "OMG there was only one exit and they counted every single person leaving on CCTV except Brian!" was literally just completely made up after the fact, just an utter lie invented by some random and then spread as gossip until gossip became accepted fact

Interesting. The whole only-one-exit was big part of the mystery of that case and it isn’t even true!

The Panama girls is the one case that everyone believes was an accident but I personally believe may have been foul play

I think that, because they went on the trek without a guide, they didn’t realise where the tourist trail ended and mistakenly wandered off and just got lost.

Someone mentioned The murder of Cathy Cesnik , i don’t think it was Maskell , also found it so strange that he would take Jean Wehner to see the body, Spritz confirmed what Jean said about finding maggots on Cathy’s face, so she must have been there but why would he do that? It doesn’t add up.

I feel that it would be one of those deathbed confessions and if it ever comes out will shock everyone.

The more I read about JeanBenet case the more terrifying it gets.

@Chocolatesandroses you can’t because of permission/ethics but if you could upload DNA of most to AncestryDNA all could be identified.

The investigators searching for the Golden Gate killer used Ancestry DNA because I think someone in the family sent off DNA and they were able to make a familial match through that to the perpetrator of the crimes and were able to arrest him.

This haunts me. I think about it often

TheFormidableMrsC · 03/09/2023 12:54

@clpsmum Me too! I was just about to post about it. I've gone down some rabbit holes with this one. I feel so sad for his Mum, she never gave up.

Suzanne Pilley - conviction but body never found.

Shaun Ritchie - I think there are an awful lot of people staying quiet.

I would like to add the very sad case of Joe Deacy in Co Mayo. It is 6 years since this young man was found, severely beaten, outside a house where he was known to be a visitor. He later dies of his injuries. The Gardai have made an absolutle hames of the investigation - it is gobsmacking that no one has been charged. His family (and lots of local people) have campaigned relentlessy for some sort of answers.

Absolutely agree though it seems there is little mystery, I suspect police know. Poor family. A terrible loss.
Along with Sophie Toscan du Plantier, spare a thought for Belinda Pereira, a sex worker who was murdered at the same time. Nobody ever convicted.

Yeah, I agree the most likely solution is that they just got lost.

The one thing I keep getting stuck on is how they survived in the jungle for 11 days without food or water. I guess it's not impossible, I would just like to know what happened to them during those 11 days - the may have wandered some distance away from the trail but the trail itself is well-used (there was even a car spotted on it the day they went hiking) and the area the trail goes through has houses and grazing livestock. It's not like super remote.

It's definitely, definitely possible/likely that they just got lost and injured and somehow at least one of them managed to stay alive that long. I wish we knew for sure.

Recently listened to an Australian podcast called The garden of Eden about 15 year old Eden Westbrook who went missing and was found hanging from a tree in a park the police are convinced it was suicide but there is also talk of her being murdered it’s a really interesting podcast.

No one mentions the Bermuda Triangle anymore!
Remember when that was a thing?

PatFussy · 03/09/2023 13:02

There is a really good book called dead mountain that investigates the dylatov pass incident. They decided it was winds that had a strange frequency that made the victims act strangely ans they left their clothes in the tent due to hypothermia late stages, which as a pp mention make you incredibly hot

Katrice Lee went missing from the NAAFI in 1981, she had been shopping with her mother and Aunt, her mother went from the checkout to fetch an item she'd forgotten and when she returned the child was missing, the aunt I think assumed she'd gone with her mother. No sign of her has ever been found even though the alarm was raised within minutes of her going missing. This NAAFI was off base and a river ran behind, we were in there that day and because our daughter of a similar age looked so like her it has always stuck in my mind 42 years on.

You were in the Supermarket when little Katrice went missing. It must have knocked you absolutely sick.

unvillage · 03/09/2023 13:03

I think about Summer Wells sometimes. A 4-year-old girl in the US who just vanished from her front garden two years ago. I feel like the family had something to do with it but no trace of her has been found and there are no suspects.

Similar, William Tyrell in Australia, a 3 year old in foster care who allegedly just disappeared one day. That was almost ten years ago and the police have updated a few times saying they are searching for his remains, but again, nothing has been found. Poor little boy.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 03/09/2023 13:03

We used to have a True Crime section ,it was up a few years ago , lots of huffing and tutting and absolutely disgusting arm chair detective comments as you can imagine from lots of posters 🙄

Can't find it now so must've been removed.

That’s local to me too.

Although I grew up long before this case whenever I went out my dad would leave a £20 note (which was a good amount of money in those days) on the kitchen table. The reason being that if I got stuck somewhere without any money knew the taxi fare was there.

What a lovely dad.

A friend of mine lived in Malton when Claudia Lawrence lived there. I've been to the market town with her. about 9 years ago, and it is lovely. What I find surprising about her disappearance is the decision for the police to speculate about her love life, which lead to all sorts of smears in the press, and that a year and a few months later the case was wound down.

This is an excellent report from the BBC

I have 3 personal ones.

  1. My mum was a bike briefly in her bathroom as a child, that disappeared before her eyes.
  1. When I was pregnant with my first child, my karaoke machine that had no radio function would play an Indian radio station whenever I placed the microphone near my belly .
  1. I was doing the laundry one morning and dug my hand down in the basket to get some jeans out, and the buckle and buttons were scolding Iron hot for no reason. They'd been in there for a few days. Nobody had been near that basket or added them to the basket.

If anyone has any plausible explanation please share as I've researched high and low and cannot find answers anywhere.

What does this mean?

I know they have suspects/known murderers but for the parents sake, I wish that they could find the bodies and lay them to rest.

There is still considerable circumstantial evidence that Barry George WAS responsible for Jill Dando's murder.

It turned out that:

  • He had been seen in the road four hours before Jill’s murder.
  • He had been identified as having been by two separate witnesses near the killing in an agitated state soon after the murder.
  • The witnesses, including a mental health worker, were so concerned about him that in the days after Jill’s murder they had rung the incident room repeatedly.
  • He had returned to both witnesses the following day seeking to persuade them he had been there at different times and in different clothes.
  • He had a history of violence against women, including formal warnings, convictions for sexual assault and a prison term for attempted rape.

Further inquiries revealed that:

  • When under surveillance he routinely stalked women.
  • He had once been found in the grounds of Kensington Palace with a balaclava, a knife and a rope – but was never charged because he was thought to have mental problems.
  • Itsuko Toide, briefly his wife in a marriage of convenience, was so frightened of him that she reported his violence to the police and fled back to Japan. (She later told me she had no doubt he was Jill’s killer).
  • Despite denying he had an interest in Jill Dando or the BBC, undeveloped film recovered from his apartment showed he took photos of women from his TV, and he kept copies of the BBC’s in-house magazine.
  • Although he denied he had ever owned or held a gun, a reel of undeveloped film was processed and revealed him posing with a pistol.
  • The pistol he was holding was of the same type that killed Jill.

BG was able to operate complex scams, and is NOT the scapegoated simpleton some would like to think.

The 3 missing Beaumont children from South Australia

Disappearance of the Beaumont children - Wikipedia

That Wikipedia article was chilling. So many wronguns in the vicinity. Something like 6 people were suspects with good reason.

this one is a bit personal as I knew Kris. Guess the mystery isn’t really what happened to him as it’s very, very likely he perished in a storm. But the mystery is where is his body. But I do find it odd that his body or backpack has never been found as there have been extensive searches for him over the last 6 years. I’d love for Sally his stepmom to get some closure.

Also David O’sullivan who also disappeared on the PCT I think the year after Kris. In a way his disappearance is even odder as it’s a much more populated part of the trail, was earlier in the season and again no sign of him since.

New foundation created to help families of lost hikers following 2016 disappearance of Kris Fowler

Kris Fowler, 34, was last seen on October 12, 2016, at the Cracker Barrel at White Pass in Washington where he stopped to get coffee before heading out to complete hiking the last leg of the Pacific Coast Trail. His phone was shut off about an hour lat...

What happened to Otto Warmbier in North Korea. Again for Jamal Khashoggi, there’s more to both cases than we are privy too.
No one will ever know the real truth.

Does it seem there were a disproportionate number of serial killers/child abductions in Australia in the 60s-80s?
