Whether it’s personal or well known, which unsolved case makes your brain sound like dial up?

Poppy Worthington. How could her monster of
a father have never been prosecuted and now
living free under witness protection. How???

I think of her often. Utterly utterly horrific and just makes me beyond angry that he is still being protected.

Patrick Warren and David Spencer, also known as the Milk Carton kids. Disappeared from my local area in 1996 aged 11 and 13. Nobody knows what happened to them. Poor family recently started a new campaign to find them and dug up a few spots but nothing found.

This case features on ‘In the Footsteps of Killers’. Very interesting episode. Everyone online seems to point to the petrol station assistant but it was a woman, they interviewed her on the programme. Not saying women aren’t murderers but very unlikely in this case.

BabblativeBean · 03/09/2023 11:19

Enrico Sidoli, the 15 year old who was murdered by a group of boys who attacked him and held him under the water at a Lido in Hampstead in the 1970s.

It was a hot day and there were apparently hundreds of people in the area, but the perpetrators were never identified. The case was reopened a few years ago, along with a photograph of a man who was believed to have witnessed the attack, but still no one has come forward.

Terrifying to think that children can be murdered in broad daylight, in front of loads of people and the killers can just walk away.

lollipoprainbow · 03/09/2023 11:23

Charfield train crash 1928. Two small children died and were unaccompanied no one knew who they belonged to. A mysterious women in black used to lay flowers at the site every year in the anniversary until the last few decades.

It is far more likely Amy Bradley fell off the ship.

Agreed. Her family last spoke to her at shortly before 4am, and she was reported missing at 6am. That's just a two hour window for her abduction from her cabin with her family right there.

What's more likely, that a drunk woman who'd been partying till 3.30am accidentally fell overboard (leaned over the rail to vomit, or was just playing around and slipped).

Or white slavers somehow managed to sneak onto a ship, enter a cabin without anyone seeing them, overpower a healthy adult, drag her away unseen, and somehow manage to get her off the boat, all within two hours and without being seen or leaving a tiny jot of evidence that anyone else was in the cabin.

Honestly the whole sex trafficking thing is the modern day version of Satanic Panic and it's so, so dangerous, since it detracts attention from real trafficking.

The vast majority of trafficking is labour trafficking, not sex trafficking. (This even applies to children, btw - most children who are trafficked are not trafficked for sex.) Trafficking works via grooming, intimidation, and they target vulnerable people who won't be missed such as people from developing countries, homeless people and girls in care with no one looking out for them. Basically people no one cares about. And people who are trafficked aren't locked up and chained to beds screaming - they walk around and run errands just like anyone else. The person sitting next to you on a bus might have been trafficked. The girl who does your nails might be trafficked.

The idea that there are sex traffickers lurking waiting to pounce on middle class white British/American women and drag them away kicking and screaming for a life of forced violent prostitution is sheer fantasy and it's really dangerous since it hurts actual trafficking victims.

I’ll start with mine: Spontaneous Combustion. Part of me is like there’s no way, but how are whole bodies found burned to a crisp without anything else around them being at the very least scorched. You can’t burn a body and THEN move it, so what happened?

I was obsessed with this...when I was about 10

SheerLucks · 03/09/2023 11:27

Posted too soon - I remember reading that there was a logical explanation for those deaths and all the strange phenomena books stating otherwise were vastly embellishing the facts.

Mycatisthebestever · 03/09/2023 11:27

The Vatican Girl on Netflix is one too especially with the Church involvement.

I don’t think falling over the rail would be that easy, but I most certainly agree that it is far more likely she ended up in the water than that she was somehow spirited ashore.

Pootle40 · 03/09/2023 11:35

I completely agree @Starlia

I think Marion realised something wasn't right and confronted him. Sadly that would have led to her demise. I think his wife at least must know more about locations he frequented. I don't think they will ever find Marion's body unfortunately.

JonBenet Ramsey didn't die from being struck on the head. The official cause of death was strangulation via ligature. You do not accidentally build a device and put it around someone's neck and strangle them.

The only reason people believe Burke is guilty is because of his flat affect and behaviour in that interview, before the interview the BDI theory was not especially widespread.

It's not impossible that Burke killed her but it's unlikely. The parents sent him away to a friend's house straight away and didn't seem worried about him telling anyone.

The autopsy showed that JonBenet had been serially sexually abused, which for me is the biggest piece of evidence and points to an adult man who had regular access to her (which would seem to rule out a stranger).

On the other hand, it's perhaps dangerous to assume that whoever was regularly abusing her killed her. The two girls murdered at Delphi were chatting online with a pedophile and it turned out he wasn't involved at all, it was just bad luck that they'd come in contact with two separate and unrelated predators.

Look into it further. The blow to the head would have led to death slowly - there was no recovering from it. Many experts now believe the cause of death was misreported.

The case of Elisa Lam who was found dead in a water tank on a ship always freaked me out as well, especially the footage of her in the lift running from something 😳 so scary

It isn’t a mystery sadly she was not taking her antipsychotic medication and relapsed what was shown on the cctv footage was her having a psychotic episode

we don’t know why she climbed into the water talk but likely to be she felt she was being followed as we can see on the footage

Who exactly are these Internet "experts" and why do they believe the autopsy got the cause of death wrong? Why do these "experts" believe they know better than the people who actually examined the body?

They found the homemade garotte used to strangle her in the basement.

She was hit on the head as well, yes, but she was most definitely strangled.

Watch this if you haven't

They're not just internet experts. Jim and Laura are very highly regarded and qualified

LOL, no. Two random YouTubers who go by "Jim and Laura" are not more qualified than the actual medical professional who examined the body and conducted the autopsy.

If you want to prove that the autopsy was wrong you'll have to do better than shitty YouTube videos.

Actually if it wasn't for the daily mail who mumsnetters seem to scoof, her father would still have contact with his other children and nobody would be none the wiser to the crime he committed. The social workers, police and other authorities first heard it in a closed court whereby the father was not allowed to be accused of the crime as they had messed up once agsin, but the daily mail pushed for it to be exposed thank god.

Kitchendisco1 · 03/09/2023 11:55

I’m not sure if these have been solved or not but they stick in my mind & I can’t find any information about them online.
The first one is that when I was at primary school in Kent in about 1989 (or around then) we heard that a mother had driven off Beachy Head with her two young children in the car (pupils at my school). I didn’t know them & it was tragic all round but I always wondered what lead her to do that.
The second one is I remember is a murder investigation being shown on Crimewatch about a middle aged man who was tortured & murdered by an intruder. He lived alone & was known in the village & had been drinking in the local pub. He fell asleep on the sofa & left the back door unlocked (usual for him). The intruder didn’t take anything (I don’t think) but cut the phone line which I always thought was really chilling. It’s always stayed with me. This would have been around 1995 although I can’t be sure exactly.

Do either of these ring any bells?

ZeldaWillTellYourFortune · 03/09/2023 11:57

DZbornak · 03/09/2023 10:55

@ZeldaWillTellYourFortune
I'm honestly convinced that JonBenet's brother killed her by striking her on the head, accidentally or not, and their parents covered it up. Agree that there was no intruder. He was heard in the background of the 911 call when the parents insisted he was in bed.

Yes, i think this is likely. Or Patsy snapped over another bed wetting incident.

The evidence of sexual abuse is not really there; much of the physical issues can be explained by irritation caused by the incontinence problem.

There certainly was no intruder and the "ransom note" screams Patsy. As does the bizarre staging. Real killers from outside the house wouldn't sit around writing a melodramatic missive with pen and paper from the kitchen. Nor waste time hiding a body.

But they were religious, wealthy and well-connected; the police were incompetent and local politicians who also were religious and wealthy protected them.

John trying to call for the plane and depart while JB still lay dead is incredible. My dog died in June and I spent more hours sitting with his body at the vet, unable to leave him behind.

Minttee · 03/09/2023 12:00

Nicola Payne, a young mum in the 90s i Coventry, I think she was 18, she walking to her mums, said goodbye to her boyfriend and baby and was never seen again. She was only a year or 2 older than me and I always wondered what happened to her

My theory is that Andre was meeting someone who groomed him in his home town, and Andrew expected him to give him a lift back.

Yes no one was charged, why she went in the room is a mystery I really felt for her and her family.

This terrifies me. One of my DC used to sleepwalk and going anywhere to stay overnight was a big worry. We had to make sure they were not in a room alone, put chairs and cases up against the door, lock the windows and hide the keys. All things you would never normally do because of the fire risk, but this child was more than capable of leaving a hotel room and leaving the building.
School trips were a nightmare.
Thankfully they seem to have outgrown it, but there is always that slight worry.

TheresNoPiccalilliInThisJar · 03/09/2023 12:05

Mary Bastholm (most definitely murdered by Fred West but he would never confirm it probably because the burial site would expose more victims).

Angel Meadows lady in Manchester. She was found wrapped up in a carpet by a construction worker. Her clothing suggested that she died in the 70s but she was found in the mid 00s. Apparently her body wasn't even that well hidden just nobody had noticed it.

Susan Thomas from fallowfield Manchester. She was around 8 years old and had gone to play in Platt Fields park nearby. Her body was discovered by the animal petting area. She was fully clothed, had been strangled and though semen was found on her coat it wasn't considered to be sexually motivated. Ian Brady and Myra Hindley were questioned about it but they denied involvement (I guess they were asked about most missing children from Manchester in the 60s).
