Things you don't want in a holiday let ...

I'll start.

Decorative cushions on the beds! Absolutely no thank you. They're quite irritating on the sofas ... but on the beds! Just why?

Another one - quite specific to where I'm staying now - unwashed cooker hood filters. They make the whole kitchen smell of dirty ovens.

Also ... it's nice if all the mirrors and the glass shower screen are done properly.

Plastic plants. What is the point of them?

Plastic plants. What is the point of them?

Omg my last holiday let had these..and they were very dusty...horrible

SheWontSheCantShesLeft · 23/08/2023 19:47

Induction hob.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 23/08/2023 19:50

Niknaks and ornaments. They just gather dust and you spend the whole holiday moving the collection of China shepherdesses and 120 sheep off the dressing table so you can actually use it and trying not to break them.

Also pot pourri. Again, just gathers dust and looks dirty.

Anything scented, especially plug in air fresheners.

Wendysfriend · 23/08/2023 19:51

Stained mattress, we had this in an air bnb and tbh I felt physically sick, worse thing was I only discovered it day of leaving as I stripped the bed and wondered why there was 3 sheets tucked in very tightly, to discover what only looked like a massacre had taken place.

NotFastButFurious · 23/08/2023 19:52

feather pillows and duvets. They make me sneeze and they’re itchy. Urgh!

TenOhSeven · 23/08/2023 19:53

Carpets in the bathrooms. Won't be staying there again!

HappyCamperTent · 23/08/2023 19:54

Heating you can’t adjust you’re both temp and timing

Countrymiles · 23/08/2023 19:55

Not enough cutlery and crockery - house says sleeps 8 and you have 6 plates and bowls.

Lack of basic cooking utensils.

Showers which are complicated to work and then trickle water

Badbadbunny · 23/08/2023 19:56

Definitely no ornaments or nic-nacs, and no family pictures either!

No runners or cushions on the beds - they won't be laundered between guests so will be filthy - we just chuck them on the floor!

No artificial flowers/plants - they just gather dust.

And no items that don't work - i.e. DVD player without a remote control, or a TV where the owner/housekeeper hasn't bothered to set/program it, or empty DVD cases, or jigsaws/games with pieces missing. If you're going to provide something, at least ensure it works and is complete!

greenacrylicpaint · 23/08/2023 19:57

pets allowed.

Badbadbunny · 23/08/2023 19:58

Also don't want a 2 slice toaster or a tiny kettle, or only 4 towels, or only 6 bowls for an 8 person holiday home!

CMOTDibbler · 23/08/2023 19:58

An Aga. Took us all week to vaguely get the hang of using it and that was after reading the instructions

Badbadbunny · 23/08/2023 19:59

Don't want thin bedroom curtains that let so much light in you're awake at 5am! Just buy proper black out curtains or blinds (and fit them properly!)

Badbadbunny · 23/08/2023 20:01

And yes, don't want intrusive owners living next door who won't leave you alone and are always around wanting to talk whenever you come or go, or even worse, look over the garden fence to chat when you're outside. Just leave us alone!

Saz12 · 23/08/2023 20:01

Cushions and bolsters on the bed. PITA.
Ornaments.

SheWontSheCantShesLeft · 23/08/2023 20:01

God yes - an Aga. We once stayed at somewhere with an induction hob and an Aga. Cause I love spending my holidays reading instruction manuals.

NotFastButFurious · 23/08/2023 20:05

Ooh so much hate for an Aga! We’ve had them a couple of times and have managed fine (and the dog loved it!!), my friend even managed to bake sponge pudding in it.

Mykittensmittens · 23/08/2023 20:07

No pets!!! Please!! Allergic and it’s very limiting.

nice wine glasses please

knives that aren’t blunt

a few essential would really be appreciated - salt, pepper, and a welcome pack of tea/bread is always lovely.

and no dangly/decorative crap unless it’s very basic and not fragile!

EvenlyDetermined · 23/08/2023 20:10

Blackout curtains, give me the thin ones that let light in please, I hate waking up in pitch dark. You can have separate black out blinds because I can leave those open and just shut the curtains.

Agree with runners and cushions on the bed, they will be thrown in the bottom of the wardrobe for the duration of the stay.

Also agree with scented anything (includes the detergent the bedding was washed in).

Anything for babies and children (stairgates, highchairs etc) cluttering the place up, only leave them if requested on booking.

LyingontheGrassonSundaymorningofLastWeek · 23/08/2023 20:11

Wooden chopping boards. I don't want to cut bread on something that's been used for raw meat.

SquashPenguin · 23/08/2023 20:13

No air freshener/ no candles/ no plug ins/ no scented washing shit for the bedding. 🤮🤮🤮

WhereTheTeapotsJibberJabberJoo · 23/08/2023 20:13

Spiders everywhere! I get one or two but when they are in every corner with their cobwebs and rubbing their willies on your washing it's nasty!

Gaggley · 23/08/2023 20:13

Wardrobes filled with baby equipment, hoovers and other things I won't use. Where are we meant to put our clothes? Agree about scented things, plastic plants and candles. Curtains that don't shut or cut out the light. Lamps without bulbs. Rusty toiletry holders in the bathroom. Out of date leaflets. Loads of instructions everywhere - just makes me feel like I'm going to get told off one way or another by not following all the CAPITAL LETTERS RULES. Dirty brush and pan. Coffee machine without the things it needs to work. Random ice lollies in the freezer that I don't know how long they've been there. Rugs that don't stay put.

Lulu1919 · 23/08/2023 20:14

Granny's old sofa
Carpets in living areas
Grubby old pots and pans ...infancy any kitchen appliance or utensil that looks used ..stained wooden spoons and chopping boards ☹️
Cushions on beds
Throws ..on beds or sofa...I worry they have not been washed between guests so never use
Yes I'm quite picky ....lol ....and I've been on a LOT of self catering holidays
