New Look - no paper receipt

DustyLee123 · 19/08/2023 08:58

I was in New Look the other day and a lady was getting a bit upset as they wouldn’t give her a paper receipt, they said email only.
I personally feel it’s not right to not be able to have that proof in your hand at the point of sale if you want it. What do others think ?

The big deal is that she's a child, and I don't want her giving out her email address in public where anybody can overhear it/her full name. She therefore needs a paper receipt in case she needs a refund on her purchase.

Hiddenvoice · 19/08/2023 20:07

Last time I was in they told me they were removing paper receipts so it’s an email or nothing. A friend created a new email that she only gives out to shops and doesn’t use for anything else. It isn’t her name and just random letters.

I think H&m have a good idea, I’ve created an account with them to get points and once my account has been scanned at the till the receipt instantly pops up in my account. I also get a notification that I have a new receipt from a certain shop.

I never give my email address in these circumstances. I'm autistic and I just want to do the transaction and leave. I find giving my details painful tbh, It feels so bad to me that I avoid it as much as possible and I think when making a clothing purchase all they need is my money.

My daughter is also neurodivergent and feels exactly the same.

icebearforpresident · 19/08/2023 20:22

I got an email receipt from New Look a while ago, I’m not overly bothered about them getting emailed to me and I never get marketing emails from them. However, I bought something for my daughter a few
months ago which didn’t fit and I took it back for a refund. The store is in a black hole of a shopping mall with no mobile signal and their in store Wi-Fi wasn’t working. I had to leave the store and shopping centre, get my receipt, screenshot it then go back and join the massive que again. Apparently they couldn’t use my email address to look it up.

Had the same experience in New Look. I said that I wanted a paper receipt please, the staff member said they were going paperless and could only do email. They had a sign up by the till saying they were going paperless but you could still ask for a paper receipt. I read the sign out to her and she gave me a paper receipt. I don’t give my email out in shops in general.

I had this exact experience. The cashier initially told me that it was physically impossible to give me a paper receipt. I pointed out the small print on their own sign. She huffed and puffed, rolled her eyes at me and eventually said I could have a paper receipt if I really wanted one.

"Yes please", I responded with a big smile.

Went in again today and was ready for battle, but was given a paper receipt without quibble, when I asked.

Both times I was actually with DD, buying for her. She's a pre teen and doesn't have an email address. I'm tempted to send her alone up to the till with cash, and see what they say.

Those with learning difficulties have caters to assist them

They really don't always have carers to assist them!

SheerLucks · 20/08/2023 09:13

I'd much rather have an email receipt, then I can just file it and always know where it is.

Paper receipts have always been the bane of my life - I just want to chuck them out but feel I should keep these silly little bits of paper 'just in case'...

SheerLucks · 20/08/2023 09:15

Whenever you purchase online you have to give your email anyway.

If it results in getting spam (invariably) then you can just unsubscribe.

How do you prove you haven't stolen something if they don't give a paper receipt and you refuse to have an email? what happens if they mistype your email address and then say they sent it but you don't receive it? I've mistyped my own address enough times, never mind a stranger in a hurry in a busy shop.

I’ve had this happen with New Look, they mistyped my email. I went to take some things back and said I didn’t receive the email and the staff member staff there is nothing they can do without it. Another more sensible staff member found it on the system as I told her when I bought it and end of my card number and confirmed it had been mistyped. Same has happened again with some trousers that I need to take back 🙄

It isn't optional, it's the law. Under UK VAT legislation, VAT registered businesses are legally obliged to provide a VAT receipt when asked to do so.

EllaPaella · 20/08/2023 12:38

I was in new look a couple of weeks ago, they asked if I was OK with an email receipt- I said no thanks and they gave me a paper one.

I can't see how they can refuse to give you a paper receipt.

(a) you need proof of purchase if you want to bring it back; and

(b) more immediately, you need proof of purchase in case an officious security guard decides to accuse you of stealing.

And they can't insist on an email address due to data protection laws. They can't tie providing personal information to making a face to face purchase.

I don't think that argument flies because of data protection laws.

Yes but online and face to face are not the same.

I can go into a shop, buy an item of clothing, pay in cash and leave (with my paper receipt). Nobody knows who I am or my name. The only time they might take my name is if I take the item back and they need evidence that a refund has been processed - that has long been normal practice. But not to refuse you a receipt because you won't give them your personal info for spamming.

Nope, sorry. New Look are on a sticky wicket here.

That said, I've not been in their customer demographic for decades...

You could be a lot less patronising. Why should anyone have to create another email address because a business refuses to comply with the law.

MNers are so accepting of bad business practice. I shouldn't be surprised, but I am.

I think if shops are going to insist on email-only receipts, then they need to have a screen where the customer can type in their own email address.

This would (largely) get around the mistyped email address issue, as well as doing away with the need for customers to spell out awkward names or announce their email address out loud.

I've just come back from a holiday in the US, and many tills had this exact capability. If retailers want to reap the savings from not having to buy till rolls etc, then they should make the necessary investment first 🤷‍♀️

I'm with her. Give people the choice of paper, email or nothing. I don't want to give my email address out here, there and everywhere, nor do I want my inbox to be filled with receipts and other unnecessary emails so that New Look can pad their 'sustainability' marketing crap. They'll undoubtedly sign you up for some mailing list, too. It's needless admin having to deal with digital receipts. If I want a paper one, give me a paper one.

actually no it’s not signing up for marketing. only you can opt yourself in for marketing. it’s a one time receipt and not the end of the world. actually, the paper and ink used for receipts contain bisphenol with can potentially harm your reproductive system. not to mention it is just more environmentally friendly. even if the company don’t actually care, why shouldn’t you? and when you lose your paper receipt and we won’t refund or exchange then you’ll moan. as someone who actually works for newlook don’t blame the staff, if our digital receipt scores are bad they relentlessly have a go at us. it’s not our fault but also is it that deep?

I was in new look and asked for a paper receipt, the girl at the till stated she still needed my email address. I refused and said under GDPR I do not have to give them an email. She then went quiet and gave me the paper receipt. They have no right to with hold paper receipts. It's also why when busy it takes forever to be served as they are individually inputting everyone's email. Stand your ground and tell them no email address and under GDPR you do not need to give it out, especially in a place that everyone can hear.

Cherrysoup · 27/03/2024 21:41

I had this during February half term and so far haven’t had an email from them. I’d just unsubscribe anyway.
