New Look - no paper receipt

I was in New Look the other day and a lady was getting a bit upset as they wouldn’t give her a paper receipt, they said email only.
I personally feel it’s not right to not be able to have that proof in your hand at the point of sale if you want it. What do others think ?

when you lose your paper receipt and we won’t refund or exchange then you’ll moan

as I said above, I've not been in their demographic for decades but if I bought an imaginary item for my imaginary niece, and was refused a paper receipt and then the security guard tried to accuse me of stealing I'd not be best pleased (to put it mildly). So maybe you could talk to your bosses about their stupid policy if you genuinely work for them?

I was in new look and asked for a paper receipt, the girl at the till stated she still needed my email address. I refused and said under GDPR I do not have to give them an email. She then went quiet and gave me the paper receipt. They have no right to with hold paper receipts. It's also why when busy it takes forever to be served as they are individually inputting everyone's email. Stand your ground and tell them no email address and under GDPR you do not need to give it out, especially in a place that everyone can hear.

it’s also probably not a legal requirement for them to give you a receipt. you sound fun though!

If stores want people to have email receipts they need to train their staff to actually listen to what's being said and enter the address properly. My first and last name both have multiple spellings and I'm sick of spelling it for them and it still being wrong! It's not my problem if the staff member can't be bothered to enter my details correctly

This, times 1000.

It's infuriating having to spell out your email address multiple times while the queue behind you gets increasingly restless and the assistant keeps getting it wrong.

I have a very common first name, but it can be spelt in two different ways. My last name is short and the same as a fairly well known place. Any time I give my name I have to spell it and every fucking time it takes multiple attempts and they still get it wrong. And if it's a situation where they have to say it back, or introduce me to someone else they pronounce it differently to how I've said it to them Confused

I spend my entire life in a cycle of 'it's [email protected]' (it's not, but you get the idea). That's Sara without a h, then Yorke with an e at the end. <salesperson enters [email protected] in their till>

I say, can I just check that please because I know you've done it wrong to make sure I get the receipt. The assistant rolls their eyes and says they've done it right. I say again 'Sara without a h, then Yorke with an e at the end' and they say yes. And I don't get the email because they've spelt it wrong.

We were in the US last summer, and whilst they are generally really behind us in terms of card payment tech (swipe your card and sign a receipt - really?!?) they did have some tills which were very sensible.

In a few places, the tills had an attached iPad-like screen, which the staff member could swivel around to face the customer. So when we were asked if we wanted an email receipt, they could turn the screen towards us and we could type in the address ourselves, and tick a box to say "no other emails please".

If UK retailers spent some money upgrading their tills to something like this, it might do away with some of the opposition to email receipts - no staff inputting the details wrongly; no having to say your address out loud.

Oliver Bonas have the swivel screen and you type in your own email!

TiredArse · 31/03/2024 11:01

I had this the other day. I was not amused as they refused point blank to give a paper receipt.

And it takes longer - massive queue and everyone fancying about having to spell out their email.

And the H&M self service tills are the work of the devil. They’re the slowest, most confusing tills ever. Woman in front tried to use part gift card, part card and the machine nearly combusted. Took three member of staff to sort it out.
