New Look - no paper receipt

DustyLee123 · 19/08/2023 08:58

I was in New Look the other day and a lady was getting a bit upset as they wouldn’t give her a paper receipt, they said email only.
I personally feel it’s not right to not be able to have that proof in your hand at the point of sale if you want it. What do others think ?

Surely it's discrimination . What about elderly people who might not have an email, or people with learning difficulties, or people who just don't want to?

are you usually such hard work @Vault687 ?

Some people just like being contrary for the sheer hell of it.

Indeed 👏

But surely it is much, much quicker for sales staff to print off a receipt than type in an email address, make sure it is correct, then ask the customer if they want to opt in/out of marketing (which is their legal obligation when asking for someone's personal details?).

Interesting - from the ICO. I thought that they could use legitimate interests to contact you but it turns out I was mistaken.

Electronic mail marketing | ICO

"We only send electronic mail with consent (unless contacting previous customers about our own similar products, and we offered them an opt-out when they gave us their details)."

So they have to offer you the chance to opt out, not to opt in when they get your details

New look definitely do that with me

They definitely do link your email with your card details, I once stated mine (always need to spell it) and without having to spell it out the assistant confirmed it. I asked how and she said it’s linked to my card.

Also give them your email and they’ll be emailing you minimum once day into eternity

What about children? My 12yo sometimes goes shopping without me. She has an email address but I wouldn't want her giving it out in public where it could be overheard.

doroda · 19/08/2023 18:04

Plus what are the rules with GDPR for children's data - wouldn't New Look need my permission to hold my child's email address?

DustyLee123 · 19/08/2023 18:06

For all those saying you’ve never had a problem with New Look, neither had I until I went in the other day

They don't store card details when you make a payment. That's not how the systems work.

Unless you have a loyalty card or something like that.

TheBeautifulTeapot · 19/08/2023 18:07

I went to New Look today. Got a paper receipt with no issues.

AuntieJoyce · 19/08/2023 18:07

Not RTFT so someone may have said similar above. No word of a lie, last time I was in new look they forgot to take a tag off one of the things that I bought and it set off the alarm as I was leaving. I had to go back (and queue again for fuck‘s sake) and then when I got back to the front of the queue she was fluffing around asking for my receipt so I could prove I bought it. I had bought it from her. She just forgotten me within 30 seconds.

Exactly, so what time saving advantage is there in emailing receipts? It's all about getting people's details.

DustyLee123 · 19/08/2023 09:28

But the member of staff at New Look wouldn’t give her one, and I didn’t get one either as I wouldn’t give my email address.

Was in the Trafford Centre store last week. Assistant asked for an email address, I said no. Receipt then given 🤷‍♀️

PuppyMonkey · 19/08/2023 18:46

If this is the future, it’s going to be doubly annoying for me and my difficult Irish first name which is part of my email address. Guess I’ll have to set up a second account where I don’t have to spend an hour spelling the address and them going WTF?!! Grin

Walkerbean16 · 19/08/2023 18:48

I paid in new look the other day and she said do you want your receipt sending to my email addrees i said how do you know my email? It's because I paid with my card which I use on their website.

Creepy.

But she's not 13 yet, she's 12. And are they asking kids their age to check they're 13 before they ask for their email address?

Don't you think that's ridiculous though? Mostly she would pay by card but sometimes could be cash, and she's perfectly capable of shopping without me - I shouldn't have to accompany her just so she can get a receipt without potentially compromising her own data/identity (her email contains her full name).

bryceQ · 19/08/2023 19:51

The technology is changing a lot in this area, retailers will use QR code or you scan something to get your receipt. Paper receipts won't be phased out completely but they will be drastically reduced over the coming years. You still currently always have the right to one. This doesn't mean staff are well trained to know this.

It's partly about retailers under pressure to be more green. But it's mostly about capturing your details so they can upsell you.

I would say though, a digital receipt isn't opt in for marketing emails, they do need to ask you that and you have the right to opt out and still receive receipt which is a transaction.

(I work in retail tech)

bryceQ · 19/08/2023 19:52

Wouldn't a child give their parents details for the receipt? As they are the card holder?

DD has her own debit card attached to her own bank account

YetMoreNewBeginnings · 19/08/2023 19:53

The staff in the store you were in were wrong. Their policy is to give a paper receipt if the customer requests one.

I’d be tempted to tweet them about it.
