New Look - no paper receipt

DustyLee123 · 19/08/2023 08:58

I was in New Look the other day and a lady was getting a bit upset as they wouldn’t give her a paper receipt, they said email only.
I personally feel it’s not right to not be able to have that proof in your hand at the point of sale if you want it. What do others think ?

There should be a new Consumer Act in my opinion. The option of a paper receipt on request should be one of many things in it.

Purpleplace · 19/08/2023 12:27

Had the same experience in New Look. I said that I wanted a paper receipt please, the staff member said they were going paperless and could only do email. They had a sign up by the till saying they were going paperless but you could still ask for a paper receipt. I read the sign out to her and she gave me a paper receipt. I don’t give my email out in shops in general.

DappledThings · 19/08/2023 12:55

She asked if I had an email address for the receipt, I said no I don't (I do really)
I always answer that question as no and it's the truth. I have an email address, but I do not use it for receipts. So the answer to the question "do you have an email address I can take for the receipt?" is an honest "no".

Iam4eels · 19/08/2023 13:02

And if you say "no" they will provide a paper receipt. If they won't provide one then pay by card as you can then use your bank statement as proof of purchase.

Neither me or the lady were given a paper receipt. The woman serving said it was email or nothing, and referred the lady to a sign when she questioned it.

Just set up a throwaway email account for spam like this. I have a Gmail account for personal emails, one for professional stuff like job applications and a yahoo account for any dross/signups/newsletters.

BlueThursday · 19/08/2023 13:19

Oh god some idiot from guernsey thinks my email address is hers so I’m going to get inundated now if more shops go email only

VisionsOfSplendour · 19/08/2023 13:20

sleepyscientist · 19/08/2023 10:32

Once you have done it once it's linked to your bank card. Now when I tap my card and they ask for the email all I have to say is sleepy and they confirm the rest. Personally I prefer it no trying to keep track of bits of paper and they can pull it up in store if you need to return anything. River island do it aswell.

That can't possibly be true, no shop is linking your email address to your bank card, they dont know your card details. It'll just be an auto fill on the email address because it's already in their system

New look definitely do that with me

Then theyd be told to give me an immediate refund. Simple.

doroda · 19/08/2023 13:46

New Look have asked at the till for an email address for a while now, I just say no a paper receipt please and it's been fine. If they start refusing I will say I haven't got an email address and ask them to write me one

Winter42 · 19/08/2023 13:48

I agreed to a paper receipt in Dunelm once and it never arrived so I am dubious about them now.

Also, my father in law, for example, has no email, no internet access, smartphone or computer etc.

See, this is the problem. The companies that say 'no paper receipts' are starting from the assumption that everyone has those things instead of saying hang on, what about the people who can't get emailed receipts? Granted, most if not all of people shopping at NL do have those things, but that isn't true for customers of every company who wants to go paperless; and what about those of us who don't want inboxes inundated with spam and offers?

Linnet · 19/08/2023 14:00

When I was in a few weeks ago I asked what happens if you don't have an email address, as not everyone does and the lady said you could get a paper one.

I always take a paper one

New Look about 3 weeks ago. He asked me for my email address which I refused to give & said I’d like a paper receipt. He refused, citing NL’s new paperless policy & told me it was “tough” if the dress didn’t fit, etc. I said “fine I’ll take my chances”. As I walked away he printed something off, screwed it up & binned it. I asked him if that was my paper receipt. He swore it was a bit of scrap (??)…..

bakermummy21 · 19/08/2023 14:51

Ive actually been off off shopping in New look because of this. Shame as I quite like their stuff. Just want a quick transaction, paper receipt and no discussion!

bakermummy21 · 19/08/2023 14:52

Put off

Merapi · 19/08/2023 14:56

VAT registered sellers are legally obliged to give you a VAT receipt if you ask for one. They shouldn't be able to refuse to provide one to those who happen not to have an email address.

LlynTegid · 19/08/2023 14:56

Perhaps ask to see the duty manager and then tell him or her that this is an unreasonable position to put the member of staff in.

I wonder what the legal position is on this (no idea), though local trading standards teams have all but closed down because of the local authority spending cuts ushered in by George Osborne.

TetrapanaxRex · 19/08/2023 15:02

A small Tesco opened up where my parents live (300 miles from me).

My father went in a few times and noticed a cheaper price if you were a a Clubcard holder.

He phoned me as they told him in the shop that he had to have an email to have one!

He's never used the internet and isn't going to start now!

I had to set up an email for the specific purpose of him getting a clubcard and then set up the clubcard online for him.

Where he lives there is quite an elderly population so some people who like him don't use the internet or have an email, will lose out on the cheaper clubcard prices unless someone can set it up for them.

HaveYouHeardOfARoadAtlas · 19/08/2023 15:04

ConnieTucker · 19/08/2023 09:49

Have a special email address for this purpose.

Dh does this, he actually sets up a different email for each company (he barely shops). Kwikfit (think it was them) sold his email address on as he started getting non kwikfit spam emails. He makes an address something like [email protected] so he knows which company he gave that email out to.

I’ll stop shopping at new look if they do this. No great hardship to be honest but I do buy some stuff from there.

Annoying the club card prices.

Anyone else with this could just give a clubcard linked to your account.

New Look’s processes seem to be getting more bizarre by the day. I’ve been waiting on a refund for a returned item for over two weeks now because they don’t process online purchase returns via the till system anymore.

You have to faff around with an online portal and QR code, and your money is supposedly refunded 5-7 days after handing your item over in store 🤥. Don’t think I’ll bother buying anything from them in future.

cakeorwine · 19/08/2023 15:10

Doyoumind · 19/08/2023 10:19

Since I gave New Look an email address for my receipt I've been getting marketing emails from them.

I've been meaning to take it up with them as I know they can't legitimately email me for marketing purposes if I haven't given consent but haven't got round to it.

The management will know that 90% of people will be like me. The other 10% will complain or unsubscribe. It hugely increases their marketing database to go paperless.

I think they can argue that on balance, it's ok to email you marketing stuff as they think it's in their legitimate interest and you can always subscribe.

They don't always need consent to email you marketing stuff if you have used their business and have supplied your email.

It's good practice to ask people if they want marketing. But they can email you, as long as they have a lawful reason and have "balanced the reasons" to justify it.
