New Look - no paper receipt

I was in New Look the other day and a lady was getting a bit upset as they wouldn’t give her a paper receipt, they said email only.
I personally feel it’s not right to not be able to have that proof in your hand at the point of sale if you want it. What do others think ?

I bet a lifetime of marketing emails from New Look is worse for the environment than a paper receipt.

Not to mention all the stuff they import that's made in Bangladesh and China and other countries

I went into H&M in my local large town and discovered their till is now self service!! Took 5 times as long. What fresh hell is this??

Everyone's doing it. M&S, Uniqlo...I think Superdrug might be. It's like they all got together and decided to go self-service at the same time.

I have a "junk" email address that I give out in shops or when you have to sign up to something, or for buying tickets. All receipts go there. I check it a few times a year and that's it. Anything I want access to ie: tickets I just forward to my normal email address.

My normal email address is for things like nursery, work stuff, stuff I actually need.

Cottagecheeseisnotcheese · 19/08/2023 10:05

when you pay by card you can get the card receipt ie mastercard visa etc from the machine that is different to store recipt but still a legal proof of purchase

MrsMitford3 · 19/08/2023 10:08

What about asking for a gift receipt?

I also ask for paper receipts. My inbox cannot bear the strain!

blahblahblah1654 · 19/08/2023 10:10

New look gave me the choice of either recently. I did ask for email but it didn't come through so I had to go back and ask for the paper receipt a few mins later.

VisionsOfSplendour · 19/08/2023 09:42

I don't buy a lot there but that would stop me going there in future

Obviously the savings will be more than the few things I buy so they won't care but I hope it s not the start of a trend , looking at you Dunelm and Argos

Pretty sure there was a sign up at my local dunelm the other week saying they’re going paperless too.

On the tills at my work, we have two buttons to click after typing in an email address:
'Ok with marketing'
'Ok, no marketing'

We are supposed to ask the customers preference but we all just click 'no marketing' to save time.

Since I gave New Look an email address for my receipt I've been getting marketing emails from them.

I've been meaning to take it up with them as I know they can't legitimately email me for marketing purposes if I haven't given consent but haven't got round to it.

The management will know that 90% of people will be like me. The other 10% will complain or unsubscribe. It hugely increases their marketing database to go paperless.

I think I'll have to set up a receipts email address, I don't want to be announcing it to the whole queue in the shop especially as it my name

cantstaymadatyou · 19/08/2023 10:28

I’m tempted to set one up like sexybitch69 @ gmail to see if the sales assistant can keep a straight face when typing it in.

In that case I would expect them to exchange or refund any items without asking to see a receipt, given that consumer laws protect the right to return.

But they won't, will they? They will demand a receipt or you're lumbered with the faulty item. See the problem with that sort of thinking?

sleepyscientist · 19/08/2023 10:32

Once you have done it once it's linked to your bank card. Now when I tap my card and they ask for the email all I have to say is sleepy and they confirm the rest. Personally I prefer it no trying to keep track of bits of paper and they can pull it up in store if you need to return anything. River island do it aswell.

fleur25 · 19/08/2023 10:33

I insist on a paper receipt now as I bought something from River Island and the email receipt never came through and I did want to return the item.

PalomaPalomaPaloma · 19/08/2023 10:39

Paper receipts are so tiny compared to shops' huge paper posters, advertising boards etc. I really don't think they're "going paperless" !!

RaininSummer · 19/08/2023 10:40

I lik email receipts as they can't get lost but it is reliant on it definitely arriving straight away or you have no proof if challenged.

Eudaimonia5 · 19/08/2023 10:41

I hate email receipts. I hate having to spell out my email address just to buy a tshirt. They always mishear and spell my email address incorrectly anyway so I end up with no proof of purchase unless I can be arsed to check it's come through with the dodgy signal that sometimes happens, then walk back to the shop and queue up for ages when I don't receive it.

No, I will not set up yet another bloody email address just for receipts! Do you know how many email addresses I need to have? I've got my personal email address, a university email address, an email address for the charity that employs me (that they insist I have to check even though I don't actually work there), an NHS email address for the place where I actually work, an email address for my part time 0 hour contract (even though I only provide ad hoc cover maybe once a month max), and finally an email address for the part time business I've set up (client facing so they need a business email and not my personal one).

I shop in new look for my teen DD.

When they offer me an email receipt I say no thank you, paper, and they always give me one.

And I’ve always had a paper receipt until now.

I had New Look recently point blank refuse to give me a paper receipt.

Thing is it was my DD13 shopping. I don't want her giving out her email address in public. I don't want them emailing her. The ICO has different rules for emailing and keeping the data of children.

We need to challenge this I expect. Don't know how.

I asked to type my email address in so I didn't have to say it aloud but the keyboard doesn't turn around.

My email address is my very uncommon name (only one of me in the UK) so counts are personal data covered by GDPR. Name also unusual spelling so I have to spell it out. Making it easy for someone else to listen in and take note of it.

3dogsandarabbit · 19/08/2023 10:58

When shop assistants ask me for my email address so they can send a receipt I just say a paper receipt will be fine thank you. I have never been refused so far.

I love the idea of a receipts email. I'm going to do that. I read that they do t legally gave to give you a paper receipt or something.

I had a rant about this in White Stuff recently. Having to say loudly so she could hear me - my name email address and road and postcode. I'm just going to say no I'm not on your system next time. So annoying.
