New Look - no paper receipt

DustyLee123 · 19/08/2023 08:58

I was in New Look the other day and a lady was getting a bit upset as they wouldn’t give her a paper receipt, they said email only.
I personally feel it’s not right to not be able to have that proof in your hand at the point of sale if you want it. What do others think ?

@HaveYouHeardOfARoadAtlas

I like your man's style. Let's be honest here, retailers want your email so they can bombard you with shit and sell your contact details on. All this paperless to save the polar bears nonsense is lies - they must take us for idiots.

Mind, in NL's defence at least they offer a receipt. I'm getting fed up now of standing at a till after I've paid and saying helloooo can I have some sort of proof of purchase please? (Waving at you, Tesco).

pumpkintits · 19/08/2023 15:16

I recently bought something in New Look and they were insistent I should get an email receipt, when I explained I wanted a paper one as I was fed up of all the emails I get she insisted it would just be for the email and she had opted me out of marketing. So reluctantly I agreed.

Approx 4 hours later I got a marketing email from them and another asking me to rate my recent experience. I filled in their feedback survey letting them know how shitty I thought their lying was.

What??? Anyone who doesn't use the Internet is either intellectually disabled or so old they have a carer???? Don't be so ridiculous!

Holshicup · 19/08/2023 15:43

Retail manager here, in this day and age where the high street is under so much pressure to survive surely to god a tiny piece of paper is a small price to pay to keep customers happy.
It's basic customer service surely, and the poor staff will no doubt have to deal with some very disgruntled customers. Thankfully my shop is stuck in the 90s and it won't be happening any time soon!

Fuck me @Vault687 , are you usually so insensitive?
Carers should be helping to promote and encourage independency
There should be both options available imo
I love NL but would be shopping elsewhere if this happens

We were in new look the other week. Realised after we left the store that they had overcharged us so went back to sort it out. It became complicated because the original member of staff had taken my email address down incorrectly so I hadn’t actually received my receipt. Lots of faffing later and they did manage to sort it. It made me resolve to ask for a paper one in future.

Apart from the fact that you sound ignorant and unempathetic Vault

Emails can be blocked at the server if they are deemed to be junk. Nothing the consumer can do. What happens then?

If companies are going to be coercive wankers then the gov are going to need to step in and make it mandatory to give a paper receipt at the time off the transaction.

Not everyone can afford or can get to alternative shops that will give a paper receipt before you suggest that.

AlltheFs · 19/08/2023 16:12

I have an email address specifically for this sort of thing which helps, and I’d rather have email myself but agree it is better if there’s choice.
My emails come through instantly on my phone usually so I can see the email in the shop.

But to be honest it is rare for me to shop in person anyway, so I’m used to online more
than in person. An email receipt from a shop is no different to an email receipt for an online purchase.

StrawberriesSW1 · 19/08/2023 16:14

I haven't email for a receipt at River Island. Needed to return the item but couldn't find the receipt in my email.
I eventually went in and told them. They found it but now 1 day out of date so return not accepted.
I don't give emails for receipts anymore.

That's not the case, and why some councils (who had introduced online-only) were forced to back down about how residents could contact them.

Besides, if people don't want a store to have their email then why should they be forced into it? People are concerned about privacy, data protection and identity theft, the elderly are especially worried about that sort of thing.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 19/08/2023 16:47

There is no excuse not to have an email or not to have basic computer skills now. This technology has been around decades when our current elderly were not elderly

I've been using computers since the late 80s. I still don't want to give out my email address to every random who demands it.

But surely it is much, much quicker for sales staff to print off a receipt than type in an email address, make sure it is correct, then ask the customer if they want to opt in/out of marketing (which is their legal obligation when asking for someone's personal details?).

A handy tip I read was to type 'unsubscribe' into the search bar in your email.

This brings up all the subscriptions you have and you can go through them all to stop subscribing to marketing emails. Takes a while but is satisfying to do!

GellerYeller · 19/08/2023 16:57

I’m losing patience with a lot of stores over this sort of thing. One supermarket self service recently gave me a countdown on screen for the receipt or you don’t get one.
Zara: online returns to store. Queue round the entire shop, reach till 20 mins later, no proof of return, just assume you’ll get an email shortly. What happens when this fails and you’ve no proof of return?! Am I supposed to photograph myself holding the goods in the interminable queue with a time stamp to prove I was there?!
I know it’s a PITA for the store staff to process online returns but I buy in store so as a regular customer I feel no guilt about this. Damn you Zara and your reasonably priced nice basics.

You shouldn’t have to give out personal information for proof of purchase
that’s the point
are you usually such hard work @Vault687 ?

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 19/08/2023 17:06

Some people just like being contrary for the sheer hell of it.

Moraldilemma84 · 19/08/2023 17:11

I used to work for Mothercare and they did the email receipt thing and I hated asking for peoples email. We were targeted on it as well and if you got less than 30% sign up you got hauled into the office and bollocked.
It was purely a way to get peoples emails so they could bombard them with marketing crap.

When new look started doing it I asked the lady serving if they were targeted on it and she said yes, so I happily give them a email address I don’t really use as I know how shit it is for the staff.
