That looks like a proper day out, Silkie!

I’ve been enjoying catching up with all the news, which has seemed rather on the exciting side for a dull thread. Luckily I've arrived to restore things 😂. We’ve had works being done on our roof so there’s a small scaffolding tower at one end of the garden, but it should be taken down next week. The work needed doing but as it was replacement of lead, unfortunately it’s going to be very expensive, as in a few thousand (ouch). Our old house has a complicated tiled roof and the lead work is in a large valley between two sections so had to be done. On the plus side, it shouldn’t need doing again for another couple of decades, ie after our time.

This evening we were just about to have dinner when DH's brother-in-law rang him to ask questions about mobile phones, tablets/iPads and the internet. BIL and SIL are in their 60s and don’t have a home computer or even mobiles, but they’ve belatedly accepted they probably need to.

Alas, this meant DH was then forced to explain everything there is to know about phones, computers, broadband, wifi, the internet and everything related to all of it for the next two hours before he could finally get some food.

I’m still incredulous that BIL and SIL have avoided joining the modern world for so long.

MallardsMoorhensAndLethe · 08/10/2023 01:25

You're welcome MissC and Bizzey.

I'm with your SIL and BIL Hilda, the modern world is something else I think is overrated 😆. I do have a smartphone and a laptop that sits gathering dust in the corner though.

That's a lovely day out Silkie glad you enjoyed it.

Happy Thanksgiving Havoc.

I'm contemplating the relative merits of BabyOil as a makeup remover versus whatever face cleaner may be stocked in my local shop. I tried it tonight and it didn't do a bad job.

Deathraystare · 08/10/2023 11:13

@bizzey ·

Only dead people don't get hormonal watching Andre Rieu 🔥🔥!!

I saw him live once ...even my DB was swooning 🤣🤣!

Glad I am not alone. He is gorgeous!! Thanks for correct spelling!

HildaTablet · 08/10/2023 12:04

Oh dear, I’m resolutely immune to the charms of André Rieu so that’s me done for!

bizzey · 08/10/2023 12:19

No painting for me today as delivery is running late 😡🤬!
Which is annoying as it is a perfect day to have all doors and windows open for the smell .

The tape/sealant thing I got for putting around the bottom of the toilet IS due to arrive today ,but can't decide to do that before or after painting?

There is no leak ...it is just very old looking and will show up badly on the new fresh look I am hoping the toilet room will have !

I do need to find some old joggers of the boys though to paint in.
I am very messy when painting!

bizzey · 08/10/2023 12:23

Any DIY tips will be gratefully received 🤣🤣!

Would gloves help or hinder me ?

HildaTablet · 08/10/2023 13:00

I wear very thin latex gloves to paint in, @bizzey. When I did the bathroom recently it saved me having my hands completely covered in paint while not being a bother. But it’s a personal preference thing, I think.

bizzey · 08/10/2023 13:47

@HildaTablet thanks.
Yes it was those type of gloves I was thinking about.
And a shower cap ! 🤣🤣.

Maybe it is good my paint has been delayed !

I can prepare better.

As I have always said my lot ...

Fail to prepare...prepare to fail !

I had been meaning to buy some gloves anyhow for when I have to hand mix food ingredients..

Not that I do that very often mind ! 🤣🤣!

HelenaJustina · 08/10/2023 16:24

Now I want tiramisu Havoc but instead am poolside at DC2 swim gala. We split the day, DH got here with her at 7:45am and I took over at 1:15pm.

MallardsMoorhensAndLethe · 08/10/2023 17:21

I wish I hadn't had that last slice of pizza 🍕 now I'm totally stuffed

Lemonsandlemonade · 08/10/2023 18:27

Made it to the beach. Had a lovely day.

sorry you didn’t get to paint Bizzey

Good morning. 😊
just finished breakfast of coconut choc chip pancakes with berries, whipped cream and maple syrup. 😛😛😛 Now finishing latte. 😊
gorgeous day here. ☀️
will make dessert shortly and get some laundry done then go out for a bit before starting dinner.

Helena, dinner around 7. Pop round! 😁
Bizzey, I don't wear gloves as my hands get too hot. My tip is to be extra careful with prep. Tape very tightly, have wet rags for drips and drop cloths in place. Take your time. Plan it out. Use a brush to paint the edges in a small area, then roller, a bit at a time and go over wet edges when you start next section. Load your roller and don't keep going over same area as you just remove paint. I'd watch some YouTube videos about cutting in and taping, too. Always tape (only use painter's tape)unless you are a pro and carefully peel tape away once done. Don't waiting for paint to dry or it will perl paint away with it.

MissConductUS · 08/10/2023 18:53

Lovely beach pictures, Lemons. Sorry to hear about your DS and the cat. I assume it was not your cat. They can be very territorial. Our cats mostly avoided the kids when they were little, but they accepted them as members of the household.

A light switch in a stairwell stopped working this morning. It was one of those lights that can be turned on and off from two separate switches, one at the top of the stairs and one at the bottom. DH had a couple of extra switches in the garage, but not that type. So he had to go to Home Depot, the big box DIY store here to get one, then replaced it in a jiffy.

In slightly more exciting news, DD and her fiancee FaceTimed us an hour ago to inform us it was official. The sneaky bloke drove up to her uni for the weekend to propose in person. DD was thrilled, of course, and the ring is lovely. I now have to notify some family members. They haven't given a thought as to when or where the wedding will be.

Ohh MissC ...so glad it is official now 🍾🍾🥂🥂 !

Enjoy the celebrations!

bizzey · 08/10/2023 19:16

Havoc thanks for the tips !

Oysterbabe · 08/10/2023 19:20

Pondering whether to turn on my laptop and do a few little bits of work leftover from last week or just leave it for when I'm actually supposed to be working. I should do it.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 08/10/2023 19:25

Bizzey, don't forget to remove then tape any wall fixtures/face plates, tape ceiling and adjoining walls, even if using same colour as painting over dray paint won't match.
Here's a taping video:

This is a good trick I saw the other day, @bizzey - unfortunately, after I’d finished painting my bathroom! It keeps the sides of the paint-tin clean, which is handy. Just stretch a sturdy rubber band over the tin and you can wipe the excess off the brush on that instead of on the tin.

bizzey · 08/10/2023 20:29

Ohh thanks for all the tips !

I had to cut off early as Strictly Dancing was about to start...and I just can't multi task typing and watching that t the same time 🤣!

I had come across that elastic band tip some time ago Hilda ...

Now to find that big bag of rubber bands that I keep coming across when looking for something else ...and I keep moving !🤣.

Another tip I saw ...which is right up my lazy street ,is to line the roller thing with tin foil or cling film for easier/less , NO cleaning !

When I " helped " 5he boys paint their bedrooms ( I lay on the bed and just kept saying " you have missed a bit " !).. we/they did pull the tape of late .
Didn't know it was so important to do when still drying.

16 years ago in the old house ..I painted the whole sitting room AND glossed the doors !

With no internet or Google ...just the memory of my dad doing the DIY !

Quite looking forward to it as I have bought myself a picture/wall art to hang when it is finished !

Not my usual decor , but caught my eye and that was it 🤣

bizzey · 08/10/2023 20:30

Mallards...I am still wanting to know about your tomato -vodka sauce you used for your meatballs!
🤤!

Silkierabbit · 08/10/2023 20:53

Just spent 4 hours gardening cutting down all the plants around the house before the painters start work on outside of house put the 9 garden sacks i made out for collection then cleaned floor then had a lovely bath. DH made another sack and filled the green bin. Completely shattered now. Luckily neither Floof nor DS got in the way which is quite rare, normally Floof supervises flooring cleaning and DS can be in the downstairs bathroom. DD cooked herself a meal whilst we were gardening.

Also cleaned chicken coop before that. And about half the kitchen was put back first thing.

Lovely to have a day at beach Lemons

Lovely news about engagement MissC

Was a bit like a holiday day out Havoc as everyone running it was Scottish with strong accents. DH has trouble understanding Scottish accents and I have to translate. Hope you had lovely meals.

Tomorrow am we have to put 3 more sacks out, an old lawnmower and an old rabbit hutch for collection by 6am. Then I have appointment in afternoon to discuss surgery. Then it's DHs piano lesson.

Having steak in red wine sauce for dinner.

Hope you solve the painting Bizzey.

Hope roof work goes well Hilda. Its all gone up a lot in price since lockdown and Brexit.

Hope oil worked well Mallards and thank you.

A little robin was watching me garden he was so sweet flying around me.

MissConductUS · 08/10/2023 21:43

Welcome, @Oysterbabe, and thanks for sharing your calming, mundane news. I hope you resisted the urge to work. I generally don't check my work email on the weekend. If it's essential, they'll call.

We're about to have our weekly call with my lovely MIL. DD has already called her to tell her the news.

Bizzey the first one is basically the recipe I use. I forgot to mention it's a creamy tomato sauce. The second recipe looks lovely and I may give it a whirl some time. I think diced low sodium bacon would do instead of pancetta.

MissC congratulations to DD and that lucky young man.

Helena hope your DD had fun at her swimming gala.

Silkies I think the only way to achieve a finished renovation in a reasonable time frame is to dangle a bonus for getting the job done by a certain date.

I remember being so sick and tired of the crew drywalling an attic bedroom that I ended up saying thanks, well do the priming and painting ourselves. I think they were using my house as a place to hang out and stay warm and dry and store tools. I did the painting myself and even though it took me more than a week it was worth it.

My number one tip is not to turn your back on your toddler while painting.

bizzey · 09/10/2023 00:34

Math thank you !
He makes it look so easy ...I think even I may be able to do that ! ,🤣.

MallardsMoorhensAndLethe · 09/10/2023 01:10

Lemons that beach is so pretty.

Havoc I had no idea you were supposed to tape trim. I always paint right next to it very very carefully. I am daft making life so hard for myself. I am not a DIY genius.

Unlike that elastic band tip for the paint tin Hilda, which is total genius.

Congratulations on the official announcement MissC.

I spent the evening stroking a cat.
