@Silkierabbit

A paddle steamer. Wow! Lucky you!!

I hope Floof is happy with the work the guys have done.

Congrats @Mumtobabyhavoc . I guess you won't need to change your user name!

@MissConductUS

Lovely pics as usual! I can never zoom out enough so an interesting blob in the distance could be anything from an Orang Utan to a cathedral!!

MissConductUS · 06/10/2023 20:03

Silkie, the paddle boat sounds like great fun. They were in wide use in New York to ferry passengers until there was a Notable Accident. I'm sure safety has improved since.

Helena, thanks for the lovely, encouraging story of your own marriage at that age. When it's right, it's right. I need to keep rereading this lovely poem by Kahlil Gibran On Children

Miss C very exciting news maybe a bit too exciting for the thread 😂😉

Very tired here. We are taking DS to beach tomorrow as supposed to be nice.

whyyy321 · 06/10/2023 20:16

That sounds really difficult, @Deathraystare - I'm sorry you didn't feel very well supported in the situation.

Wow @MissConductUS - that's quite a few bits of big news for you in a short time! I can't speak much to marrying at 22 (I got married at 35!) But exciting news, depending what your DD thinks? If you know, you know! Can speak more to moving jobs after a year- the first maybe 10 years of my career I had to move every 12-18 months. It's hard as you can feel unsettled but depending on the industry it can be a really productive thing. It sounds like he's excited about the move, which is lovely. Gosh, being a parent is hard isn't it! I guess I assumed you'd stop having to worry so much as they grow but perhaps not!

Took DS with us to this family orientated pub after work/nursery and he showed off his new walking skills to some of our friends who were suitably impressed and proud.

Silkierabbit · 06/10/2023 20:20

Sorry you had to deal with that Death

That's a very interesting account MissC never heard of that before but we here loads about the Titanic.

Silkierabbit · 06/10/2023 20:22

Glad you had nice time at pub why.

Hope beach is nice Lemons. Its unusually warm here tomorrow for this time of year 24C and sunny,

MissConductUS · 06/10/2023 20:46

Lemons, it is a bit too exciting.

Deathray, reception is where the nutters turn up, no question about it.

why, in lots of ways, parenting does get easier as they grow up. But you also lose control over things. That's why I needed to reread the Kahlil Gibran poem I linked to.

I can't wait for our Sunday zoom call with DD. I suspect he won't have popped the question by then because they won't have seen each other in person, unless she comes to visit him this weekend without telling us, as she has form for doing.

Death, nice to see you pop in with some news. Sounds kind of unsettling, though. My background is also public sector and have had my share of encounters with mental health cases. One memorable one was client growling when not talking. That was a bit unnerving.
Miss, very nice news about pending engagement for your dd. I completely understand your trepidation, though. Twenty-two seems soooo young now, but remember that your daughter is in a ltr and gone through uni; has a good head on her shoulders; and was raised by you. 😊💖
Silkie, I cannot believe how it is dragging with your ds's education plan and implementation. 😡 Glad you continue to pursue activities that make you smile, though. 😊
Whyyy, awww, very sweet. It's nice to have those moments.

Last couple days Havoc says, I love you, after I say it. A couple weeks ago if I said, I'm proud of you, Havoc would say that back, too. 🥹
Mum's birthday is this weekend and it's also Thanksgiving this weekend. Thinking of making a small cake like last year and an apple pie. Cake on Sunday and leftover cake and the apple pie on holiday Monday. Not cooking turkey, though. Will do baked chicken thighs, gravy, dressing (I add cranberries and chopped apple, sometimes bacon), lamb chops (likely with rosemary), and veg. Was going to do asparagus, but now thinking roasted squash and potatoes.
I'm nervous, but thankful to have made it to 6 months so far. 🤞
Havoc has a cold. Did covid test yesterday and was neg. Runny nose, sneezing and mild fever; diarrhoea; low appetite. Reminder: have had 22 odd weeks covid this year having had it badly 3x, so very paranoid. By August had had covid every day of my pregnancy except two weeks, hence my extreme paranoia. 😬
Gorgeous day here. I love fall. Forecast is for up to 24c on the weekend which is a bit unusual.

bizzey · 07/10/2023 02:00

Ohh boy ohhh boy oh boy !!
I go off grid for a week and come back to catch up on...
Pregnancy 🥰!
Engagements 😍😍
Food recipes 😋...

But ,but..just for a moment ...can I just ask MATHS....

tomato - vodka sauce for the meatballs 😲🤪!
That I would happily practice my cooking skills with 🤣🤣.

I have been shattered after my weekend away and only just caught up on things that I had to do
with a few hiccups on the way.!

I had been waiting 2 weeks for " the handyman" to get back to me to give me a date for when he could sort out a few issues in the bathroom...

Out of the he phoned me to say he could come in 20 mins. or a week !!

Saturday is my bathroom cleaning day..so bathroom not quite as I would want it ....but to have a light back in my bathroom was worth the embarrassment 🤣🤣.

bizzey · 07/10/2023 02:08

I messaged the ds's and said
" we have a light ,a lock and a working toilet upstairs 😂..I feel very posh now !"

Toilet hadn't been usable for a while and as none of us like the upstairs toilet anyhow it hadn't been a major problem!

But DS and his gf are coming to visit in a few weeks so it will be nice for her to have a toilet all for herself 🤣🤣

bizzey · 07/10/2023 02:20

@Mumtobabyhavoc thank you for saying it was Thanksgiving this Monday!

I am ashamed to say I did not know Canada had a different one .

Off to Google it a bit more.
I love what I am learning on this thread.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 07/10/2023 04:16

@bizzey it is Sunday, but Monday is also a federal holiday, "Thanksgiving Monday." Because the holiday is always the Sunday, Monday is a stat. The American one is end November.
Relief to get bathroom fixed! (Unintended pun). 😊

Deathraystare · 07/10/2023 07:30

Well this morning at 6am was actually exciting. Or make that rather scary!
Minding my own business at a bus stop (at least half an hour early thanks to selfish bastard flat mate who played loud music all night and it was still going strong when I left at 5.30am and yes I did kick his door and ask him to turn it down as I was on early shift but whatever),,,

I saw my bus was soon to come. Anyway a man crossed the road, brandishing something silver in his hand. I thought it was a knife and thought "Oh shit, here we go". (We have had a few stabbings near my work that appear to be gang related).

Anyway as he crossed I tried to get a discreet look at said "knife". It was still very dark out and obvs I did not want to stare. From what I saw it did not look like a standard knife but a bit like a palette knife (think kitchen omelette flipper) but I am not really surel

Thankfully my bus came along and he did not get on. Phew!

Deathraystare · 07/10/2023 07:35

@whyyy321 ·

That sounds really difficult, @Deathraystare - I'm sorry you didn't feel very well supported in the situation.

It is the slowness in response that gets me! When new doctors turn up with someone in charge, they check their alarms in reception and are told by those in charge to be careful to check it properly or the alarm will go off and people will come running. Really???? Hollow laughs from us receptionists!

MallardsMoorhensAndLethe · 07/10/2023 13:15

MissC I reckon playing the field is overrated. It just leads to women reaching their 30s without settling down, then marrying just about anyone so they can struggle, with declining fertility, to have kids before their ovaries shrivel up and die. It's a subconscious thing, I think, so they'll never admit it because they don't realise it themselves. I've known a few admitted it after the inevitable divorce from the dickhead they married. Honestly from what I've seen, the majority of the best men marry young. 22 is a grown-ass adult not a child. Congratulations on the wedding and new job 🎉 your DC sound very sensible people who will have good lives, success stories, you should be proud parents 💚

Deathray how frightening. I hear you with the police 😒

Fingers crossed for the builders to hurry up Silkie I too hate how they drag their heels completing things. I find it frustrating that you can't get 9-5 from them until it's finished. All the skipping around between jobs, working half days and leaving things unfinished for longer than necessary is so annoying.

I'm about to hang my washing in the sun to dry. I shall then sit outside with a magazine to soak up some vitamin D myself.

bizzey · 07/10/2023 16:03

Now that we have 2 toilets ...I thought I would get on with freshening up the downstairs one.

Cleared out and sugar soaping the walls ready for an attempt of a fresh coat of white paint tomorrow...

DS is still insisting on still using this toilet 🤣🤣!.

I get distracted very easily so this small job could take a while 🤣

Deathraystare · 07/10/2023 16:03

Got home to enjoy some Andre Rhiey (¡¥} sure ofspelling) playing in Berlin. Wonderful and seems such a lovely man. I must be very hormonal as I am absolutely grizzling! Mind you most of the audience were moist eyed during Amazing Grace!!

Question. Can I still be hormonal at 63?!!!!

Oh just to let you know the smoking crazy Bosnian came back to reception today. Aaaaaaaaaaargh!

bizzey · 07/10/2023 16:08

Only dead people don't get hormonal watching Andre Rieu 🔥🔥!!

I saw him live once ...even my DB was swooning 🤣🤣!

bizzey · 07/10/2023 16:12

I always remember another conductor who had me spellbound at the Proms at the Albert Hall one year !!

MissConductUS · 07/10/2023 19:11

I have just googled Andre Rieu. He's quite good looking for age 74. Harrison Ford was still quite hot at that age.

@MallardsMoorhensAndLethe, I think your comments are spot on and have caused me to have a bit of a rethink on the issue. I got divorced in my 30s and the selection of men was pretty dire. Most of the good ones were already married. I feel like I've won the lottery twice, finding my lovely DH while I still had time to have kids, and by how well the kids turned out. They are both very sensible, hard-working and kind. DD is also very gifted academically and is double majoring in neurobiology and data science at a prestigious women's university. I'm not concerned about her finding a good job when she graduates, especially if she's in the Boston area. It's such a center for higher education that there are loads of technology and biotech firms in the area. And her boyfriend (fiancee?) is a real catch. She might not find someone like him again. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the matter.

It's Saturday, so it's pouring rain outside, and we're under flood warning again. I picked up a rotisserie chicken for dinner.

Didn’t end up at beach. DS not 100 percent.

DS got scratched by a cat today. Long story but he was terrified and jibbed then burst into tears. I feel awful.

bizzey · 07/10/2023 20:16

@MissConductUS has he asked her yet ?
Or is it just you , your dh and us ( getting my hat ready now !) that actually know !🥰.

I am happy at what Mallards said as well, very wise words.

I feel I may have an " early " engagement with ds and gf .

I would have been concerned if it wasn't for this thread.

But my auntie got married to her 1st boyfriend at 19 and they are still together 55 years later .

Silkierabbit · 07/10/2023 21:55

Sorry about DS Lemons and hope he feels better soon.

Thanks Mallards Yes I have no idea why builders can't finish one job and have to have several on the go at the same time and always seem to do most of the job then the final parts are painful to get them back. Though its a lot less painful than old house when we had it done with toddlers and took 2 months with no appliances in that time. I think these ones are aiming for the 2 months record but appliances were back after 4 weeks at least and now all but 2 small cupboards are useable.

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving Havoc I also did not realise it was different in Canada, I just thought you were planning early.

Hope there are no floods by you MissC

Had a portuguese tart and tea to start the day then left at 10am to go down to Southend pier to catch the Waverley steam boat at 1.20pm. The pier is 1.3 miles long and the parking was almost a mile away, you can get a train along the pier but we walked it there and back and was a lovely sunny day and 24C. Then we took the steam boat, we boarded and went to have a look around the boat. You can see the steam engine in full downstairs, its great. Then we had a drink in the bar which has floral seats. Then went upstairs to see the boat going along the sea, it says its the world's only remaining steam boat at sea. Went down for a meal and I had highland vegetable soup and bread and butter and the soup was really good, like you get in Scotland freshly made. DH had the fish, chips and peas which was big and we both had a slice of sponge cake with buttercream and jam which was a bit average. And I had a coffee and then we did more watching the boat and then a final drink in the first bar. Walked along pier back to a gorgeous sunset could see whole of the sun. Then went to collect parcels from Pets at Home and Dunelm and just got there before the 7pm close.

We had food for Floof, a light up Christmas pudding, a fleece duvet cover for me, robin cup and robin glass and Christmas pudding glass and an ottoman for DD. Came back and neighbour has kindly cut down a few of our roses at the side of our house as its being repainted. We bought candyfloss back for DS.

Silkie, what an absolutely fantastic day you had! It almost sounds like holiday!!! 😊

Have decided on tiramisu for tomorrow as I don't make it often, so it's a nice treat and my mum said she'd like it.
