Sprouts, those pictures are magnificent! Where were they taken?

Mum, your lunch sounds like a Waldorf Salad:

https://www.thepioneerwoman.com/food-cooking/recipes/a98311/chicken-waldorf-salad/

Oddly enough, I picked up a container of Waldorf Salad at the posh Italian supermarket yesterday to have for my lunches this week. They also have fab crusty baguettes, so I got one of those as well, cut it into sections, and froze them.

DD has texted that she made it back to uni with no problems. I think she's really thrilled to be back. I suspect we were getting on her nerves a bit.

Chicken Waldorf Salad

I first heard of Chicken Waldorf Salad as a teen. Tea parties were in vogue in our homeschool circle, so we were always on the lookout for new tea-ish recipes to try.

Your patio is beautiful Miss..
I must organise myself to so some Autumn planting.

Happy holidays to you and your DD Silkie.

Havoc, i would love to try that recipe! I love chicken and I love grapes so sounds delicious!

Still love how this thread makes me sleepy..

Lemonsandlemonade · 28/08/2023 08:08

Havoc we would say oven too - or cooker or stove.

Chicken and Waldorf salad sounds lovely.

meeting a friend for a play date today. we are supposed to be doing a picnic but it’s a tad cold here! DS continues to do well with his toilet training I hope when he goes to nursery later this week he will be confident enough to go.

DH at work after 17 days off. He is dreading it as to save money his work now no longer cover absence due to holiday or illness meaning he is doing the job of three people. He is not a happy bunny.

Back in work for me Friday. Am looking forward but not as don’t want to leave DS.

Lemonsandlemonade · 28/08/2023 08:10

Helena - the only problem with Tenby is it’s far too popular now! We go around April time if we go at all.

sproutsandparsnips · 28/08/2023 10:14

Miss those pictures are all in Alaska. I had some lovely ones in the Canadian Rockies too, but I fear posting them may be beyond me!
Havoc, I like the sound of the croissant with savoury items. Do you melt cheese onto the croissant? How does it work? I'm truly sorry about the ongoing fires. Has there been any improvement?
Lemons - good luck with trying to start a PGCE, I think getting qualifications as an adult is actually more satisfying.

HildaTablet · 28/08/2023 10:38

Beautiful pictures, sprouts.

I got the baking stuff out yesterday in a desperate attempt to use up some of my leftover sourdough starter - I’m finding that I hate throwing it away, but otherwise you just end up with ever-increasing amounts, as you constantly have to refresh it.

There are loads of recipes for using the perfectly-good discard so I made a banana bread and added in chocolate chips and pecans. It turned out well apart from taking about twice as long in the oven as the recipe suggested.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 28/08/2023 12:17

Hilda, choc chip pecan banana bread is what I've been making, too! Yum!!! I make mine in a square cake pan instead of a loaf pan and bake about 70-75 mins at 330f and get much better results. (Lots of trial and error)
Lemons, sending you support re ds heading off to nursery. It's a big step for both of you. 💖
A couple of weeks ago Havoc peed for the first time in the potty. I had gone to put the diaper in the garbage. When I came back Havoc said Uh oh. I saw it and said, Not Uh oh, Baby, that's great! Then Havoc repeated about three times, It's great! 🥲🥲🥲
Sprouts, we have "nocturnal thunder storms" in the forecast for Monday-Thurs... sounds ominous, but news said it should help the fires here in BC. Some evacuation orders have been rescinded as well, but a lot of homes and businesses have been lost in the Kelowna area. I don't put cheese in my croissant sandwich; just chicken salad, but I do like to warm and very lightly toast the croissant in the toaster over first.
Miss, I've never actually had a Waldorf salad, but know of it. It does seem like something to make at home and not order out and does remind me of an old Fawlty Towers episode (re-runs used to be on PBS when I was a kid).

Wide awake here since 3:00am; it's now almost 4:20.

IWanderedLonely · 28/08/2023 12:31

In Wales. Should have been driving back home this morning but DH now has the stomach bug that DS had last week. Goodness knows when he'll be fit to travel. He's back at work tomorrow and I'm minding grandchildren, so we really need to get back

Silkierabbit · 28/08/2023 14:33

Hope you all get better soon Iwandered

Silkierabbit · 28/08/2023 14:43

Lovely deck MissC

Hope conditions improve Havoc We also can call the cooker an oven and a hob, the oven is the main part you would put like a roast in, the hob is the rings then there is the grill part. The whole thing is a cooker. At least that's what I call them.

Wonderful photos Sprouts I love hearing about and seeing holidays especially places not been to. Looks like an amazing holiday.

Thanks Half

Hope work goes OK Lemons

We had breakfast by the beach at Long Beach Hotel today then moved over via taxi to Sugar Beach. Lovely taxi ride passing sugarcane, pineapple fields and mountains, a mosque and hindu temple and sugar factory and ending at beach. Given welcome iced tea and got room with sea view. Lunch had Mauritain fish salad, DD had spring rolls and veg pizza and both had virgin pina coladas. Grand piano being played. Dinner at Spanish tapas restaurant. 4 nights here. Love it. This is room view and welcome cocktails. The little birds sing a lot here like last hotel.

More lovely pictures, Silkie. So have you changed hotels?

This linguistic difference greatly confused me when I first started on MN. I had no idea what a hob or a cooker was. In the US, the whole unit is called a stove (or a range, if a bit posher), with the oven for baking or roasting, and burners on top for heating food in pots and pans.

Quiet day here. I have my annual physical exam at 4:00 so I'm leaving a bit early to get there.

Hello again,
Didn't manage any more sleep, so I've got my latte and a bagel with PB&J. Havoc is dipping fingers in my coffee saying, Ohh, coffee. Num num. I've just moved it as Havoc was attempting to pick the cup up. Disaster averted.
Now just saw Havoc had two slices of jam covered bagel in hands. Persuaded Havoc to put back on plate and sit beside me to eat own breakfast.
Wildfire smoke much thicker and lower today. 🙁
Need to phone mechanic #2 in a half hour re car's turn signals not working. Mechanic #1 was unable to access panel to change the control. Hoping other mechanic can give it a try. Want to avoid taking car to dealer $$$ if at all poss.
Yes, Miss. Stove is top, oven is box and range is sometimes seen in print ads, but sounds a bit foreign to my ears. I like the sound of hob. 😃If you were going to buy a new unit you'd say a new "oven."
I guess the phrase, "Now you're cooking with gas." makes no sense whatsoever outside of Canada or possibly US. (Not heard often now, though)
Silkie, everything looks fabulous! 😎
Watching news about impending hurricane to Florida. 😳

Mumtobabyhavoc · 28/08/2023 15:42

btw, Silkie. Is you DH still feasting on cheese in your absence? 😋

MissConductUS · 28/08/2023 16:11

I guess the phrase, "Now you're cooking with gas." makes no sense whatsoever outside of Canada or possibly US. (Not heard often now, though)

It was an advertising slogan used widely on the radio in the 1930s. Until then, most people cooked on wood-fired stoves. Natural gas-fueled stoves and electric ones were just coming on the market, and there was a battle for market share.

We have mostly gas fired appliances - stove, tumble dryer, and furnace, but in our case, we're rural enough that there are no natural gas lines in the street for us to tap into. So we have a 500-gallon propane tank. By some odd coincidence, the propane company is coming today to fill it.

Yes we changed hotels this morning MissC from Long Beach to Sugar Beach though they are similar style of hotels.

We just had dinner on the beach and it was lovely. Small cat appeared.

DH might well be eating an all cheese diet in my absence Havoc We are getting about 20 pics of Floof a day from him, they seem to be very happy together.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 28/08/2023 19:39

Silkie, 🤣🤣🤣🤣

MallardsMoorhensAndLethe · 29/08/2023 01:41

See, just to confuse you all more, we do have stove/range/aga in the UK (similar things I think) but they're not the smallish machine for an ordinary kitchen that's been pictured/posted about. They're huge things for a huge farmhouse kitchen and they don't just cook they provide hot water and heat for the home too (not sure how much of that is their purpose or whether it's just a side effect). I'm not even sure if they run off gas or electric like a cooker does. They might only run off wood or oil, unless that's just because it's the only fuel available on some farms. You couldn't run a cooker off wood or oil though, it's a facility that's not in the design.

Hope those that need rain get it. Sorry for the businesses and homes that have been lost already.

Hope mechanic can fix the car ok Havoc

Gorgeous pics Silkie. Bless that cure kitty. The food looks delicious.

Get well soon 🙏 to Wandered's family.

Went for a walk, lots of cats hanging around tonight, stroked a few, got eyeballed by some people who must think stroking cats is weird. I thought the eyeballers were weird.

MallardsMoorhensAndLethe · 29/08/2023 01:42

*cute kitty

Mumtobabyhavoc · 29/08/2023 01:50

Ahh, Mallards, interesting!
light drizzle here. Hoping it increases and rest of province gets drenched. News says 1600 homes still evacuated in W Kelowna.
at last our air is fresher. I'm grateful for the relief. Sadly, heat warning up north in Yellowknife.

mathanxiety · 29/08/2023 02:50

Sounds as if the cool weather will be a huge relief whenever it arrives, Havoc.

I spent the weekend doing laundry and packing as DD3 is off to Boston at the end of the week for grad school. I'm flying with her. We leave at an ungodly hour on Friday morning and I'll return with empty suitcases on Saturday night. I miss her already sniff

Mumtobabyhavoc · 29/08/2023 03:16

Why hello, Math. Nice to see you here. 😊
Will you get a chance to play tourist or at least get a lobster roll?😋

Silkierabbit · 29/08/2023 05:15

These are range cookers in the UK, https://www.rangecookers.co.uk/. It varies what the term is used for but they are generally the huge cookers with the beautiful appearance. We had one in old house, do you have an aga then Mallards they are wonderful. Ours was a Rangemaster duel gas and electric and didn't do hot water or heating, I think it might be the aga that does that. It was just a bigger version of what we ordered which to add to confusion is sometimes under cookers, sometimes under mini range in shops. I would refer to our one as a cooker to friends but say I want a mini range to kitchen people so we don't get any random stainless steel type cooker. Though that's largely as we have a custom made inherited kitchen as we are in a listed cottage which has unusual dimensions and you can get the stainless steel in the odd dimensions but not the mini range ones so they are changing the height everywhere.

Sorry your DD is leaving Maths but good she has a good future.

Another lovely day here. I love meetings cats too Mallard but some people don't seem to like them.

IWanderedLonely · 29/08/2023 07:51

We have a range cooker in our tiny kitchen. It had a gas oven, a fan oven (which I use 99% of the time) an electric grill and a gas hob. We've had it nearly 10 years and I love it, but I hate cleaning the gas hobs, so fiddly.
DH has gone to work today, I really need to get up and showered, but keep promising myself I'll move in 5 minutes.
Math hugs for you. Is DD3 your youngest?
Silkie pics are stunning, have a great time.

Silkierabbit · 29/08/2023 13:15

Thanks Iwandered We have a small kitchen too though glad of that when being redone.

Lovely day here again. Breakfast by the pool and beach with pancakes and lovely birds. Lots singing. Not managed pics but these are some

https://explora.mu/photos-hd/birds-of-mauritius

We saw the Mauritian sparrow, it sings non stop and the black and white one with a crest and red bit on too it gorgeous I think it says bulbin conde bird there and a one with a fluffy underside, maybe a baby.

We had lunch, I had dim sum with pina colada mocktail and then walked along the beach to book snorkelling trip for Friday then went swimming in lovely outdoor pool with palm trees, view on beach and singing birds.
