I won't hold my breath for him to tidy it..

Sprouts and Mallards - DD3 and I decided we didn't know what the answer to those questions might be and we didn't want to find out the hard way.

After a short discussion of what we might do if we came face to face with a coyote on our nightly walk (DD3 thought turning and running would be in order, I thought shining my phone flashlight would be a good idea) we looked up how to deal with a coyote encounter, and the answer was not 'turn and run'. Maintaining eye contact, making a loud noise, and opening a jacket/flapping your arms to make yourself look bigger and unafraid seemed to be the best advice. They are predators and will give chase if you run, but they know when they are up against something bigger that is ready to stand its ground. The biggest threat from a coyote is rabies so a bite is to be avoided.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 19/08/2023 22:35

Silkie, yes brave to meet internet friends. So glad it's going well! Did you have proper afternoon tea?
Half, good for you on a cleaning roll!
Lemons, you and I are of the same mind today. Pic attached. 😋(Nanaimo bars, cannoli, gingerbread biscotti).
Bizzey, fire smoke heavy overhead but not low yet.
Mallard, sounds sensible. 👍

Had a good meet-up with friend whose dc is about Havoc's age. Friend moving province so likely won't see each other for quite a while. 😢
Havoc is being adorable self giggling and stealing my lunch and laughing about it. Watching news coverage re Maui. Very sad there. Hurricane now heading for Baja/Cali.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 19/08/2023 22:37

Math, yes. Make noise, yell to Go away, etc. I carry small animal pepper spray as well.

Silkierabbit · 19/08/2023 23:28

Yes it was traditional afternoon tea on tiered plates stand with sandwiches cut in finger shape then home baked scones with clotted cream strawberry jam and other cakes. Very nice and I was popular as I found an offer for hotel with free afternoon tea and breakfast cheaper than room only. Just had dinner with the other lady remaining overlooking the river, very nice. Had pork in a cider sauce with apple and veg and then fudge cake and ice cream and sparkling water. DH had seabass and then ice cream.

sorry you are ill Lemons.

yes there was a meet-up in 2019 I chickened out of last minute but has been lovely.

glad meet-up went well Havoc

Mumtobabyhavoc · 20/08/2023 14:28

Silkie, that sounds really nice. traditional tea here can be quite expensive.
Lemons, read your post more closely - I hope you are okay?

Been awake since 5am, so about 6.5 hours sleep... unsure if I should try to nap until Havoc wakes up or jus get up and make breakfast and a latte... Still have to paint today: must finish hall closet and paint shelf then take last bedroom closet apart and paint, reinstall closet organizer. etc. Ugh.

Silkierabbit · 20/08/2023 14:38

We had breakfast and nice walk along river then back home. Hope you can get some rest Havoc.

I had a lovely but dull walk. We got there to find the walk we had planned was still closed due to Storm Arwen. So, we had a 6 mile walk but it was all road, no traffic allowed though. So many butterflies though, we saw dozens.

MissConductUS · 20/08/2023 18:29

Lemons, that is an odd set of symptoms. We're having a surge of new strains of covid here at the moment. I wonder if you might have a mild case of it.

Math, we have a lot of coyotes here in the Hudson Highlands. They tend to be out mostly at night. The few that I encountered during my running days ran away as soon as they saw me. I don't know if they're timid, I'm scary of a bit of both.

Silkie, your meet-up sounds lovely.

DD and DS have reserved a kayak and are going kayaking on the Hudson River this afternoon. I did an early three mile walk this morning, went to church and then did a bit of gardening. I'm contemplating a bit of lazy Netflix watching and then possibly a nap.

Have a lovely kayak MissC Love kayaking.

HelenaJustina · 20/08/2023 20:49

We’ve had a busy day, I found a local Mass this morning, then we watched the match and had roast chicken for lunch. We visited a tiny hermit’s chapel built into the cliff this afternoon, followed by 3 hours on a beautiful beach.

Silkierabbit · 20/08/2023 21:34

DH and I had agreed to do gardening in the car on return and then DH declared he would do gardening alone. A few hours after we got back I said DH are you doing gardening. No. Shall we do it together. No. Then grumpf goes into garden and returns 3 hours later declaring proudly that I had to stop as it was dark and could see nothing but I filled up the entire green bin. I am very proud of him.

Sounds like a lovely day Helena

Tomorrow the silkies and rabbit go to holiday home who is very good with them. I thought after that we just needed to pack for holidays and collect a couple of parcels, check in and print out things etc and order a couple of small bits for kitchen then I remembered we need to empty the kitchen. At least its not a big kitchen but one we have to do it and two were do we put it.

Floof is so happy we are back and extra trilly.

Silkierabbit · 21/08/2023 19:19

Cahms home visit, Maudsley call and annual review paperwork for me to fill in. DH has gone to take silkies and rabbit to holiday home so free for kitchen. Will collect parcels on way back. Maudsley are signing off.

Lemonsandlemonade · 23/08/2023 14:30

Are you pleased re Maudsley signing off? Silkie.

despite being poorly at times I had a lovely holiday. Yes holidays are different with a LO I wouldn’t change it for the world.

we had an amazing holiday. DS said he was happy a few times which was lovely.

Back to three tons of washing but

Lemonsandlemonade · 23/08/2023 14:32

Sent too soon. I wouldn’t change it.

Lovely sunrise from ferry today.

Silkierabbit · 23/08/2023 14:51

Glad you had a lovely holiday Lemons and that your DS enjoyed it too. Lovely photo. I was a bit surprised the Maudsley were signing off as I didn't think DS had made much progress and still has a long way to go but they said they thought he had made good progress and no longer needed them. Its good they think that but I liked the security of them and hoped they would stay until we got him back in school. We have the local team from cahms home treatment and education.

All packed for Mauritius and checked in. Fly tomorrow with DD, very excited. Kitchen has started today and DS is handling that well, staying in the living room whilst they walk in and out and they have an apprentice his age and he can hear them.

mathanxiety · 23/08/2023 17:32

We are entering a two day period of intense heat, just as local elementary schools open for the fall semester.

Today's heat index will be around 112°F, which I believe is about 44°C. The heat hits you in the face when you go out and your clothes stick to you within minutes. No evening walk for me tonight!

The weekend ahead is supposed to be lovely though.

MissConductUS · 23/08/2023 19:04

Lovely picture, Lemons, and I'm glad you and your small human enjoyed the trip. We used to go on beach holidays at Block Island, Rhode Island, when the kids were babies and toddlers. It was well worth it, and they had a great time. Perhaps we'll go back there next summer after DD graduates from uni.

Silkie, I hope you have an easy trip and a lovely holiday. It will be a nice change of pace for you and your daughter. And you get to miss some of the chaos of having your kitchen redone.

Math, I just checked the forecast for Chicago. You really are in for it today and tomorrow. The heat dome is just west of you. It's been lovely here.

The only duck sighting to report was yesterday. It was a solo duck diving for fish, and much to far away to get a picture of. There is no duckling in sight, but I might have missed it from that far away.

When DD's car windshield was smashed, her registration sticker was damaged. The printed part was intact, and that was moved to the new windshield with some tape, but it clearly had been damaged. DH ordered a new registration sticker online last week, hoping to replace it before she returns to uni with the car on Sunday. There is something in the post today from the state Motor Vehicle Department, so let's hope it's come. I don't want her getting pulled over by the police for having a damaged sticker.

Having such a good week, we went coasteering yesterday which involves doing all the things you would usually tell your children are far too dangerous! Highest jump into water at the flooded quarry was 9m and although all of us did the 6m jump, only DC3 did the highest one!

MallardsMoorhensAndLethe · 23/08/2023 21:00

math that level of heat sounds awful I hope it eases up soon.

Glad you had a good holiday lemons.

MissC the local moorhens have had another load of hatchlings. Their other family are almost full grown now.

Nothing interesting going on here today, I've been reorganising a cramped cupboard.

IWanderedLonely · 23/08/2023 21:30

Just getting over a horrible chesty cold with headache. Everyone else is now starting with it. We've all lurched from 1 illness to the next this year, don't know whyConfused. DD2 tinted my eyebrows today ( they're becoming invisible as I get older)

Mumtobabyhavoc · 23/08/2023 21:35

Silkie, have a wonderful (and well-deserved) holiday! Can't wait to hear all about it! 😊
Lemons, glad everything went well! How are you feeling now?
Math, I'm sorry you are suffering the dreaded heat dome. We had one in '21 and it was lethal here, please take care.

Just having lunch: left-over meatballs, zucchini and fresh tomatoes in cream with linguine. Will be finishing hall closet next and hopefully sort and purge a few boxes.

Silkierabbit · 23/08/2023 22:13

Thanks MissC and Havoc I am really looking forward to our holiday.

Lovely meal Havoc

Hope can get sticker sorted MissC

Hope you can manage heat OK Math We are all quite bad in heat.

Canyoning sounds fun Helena

Hope you feel better soon Iwandered

Kitchen starting again at 8.30am and leave for airport around 2pm, flight at 6.55pm.

IWanderedLonely · 24/08/2023 07:27

Have a wonderful holiday Silkies

CurlewKate · 24/08/2023 09:47

My house smells wonderful because I have made a big pot of dal for dinner and the freezer. And I have also made coffee.
