Jacqueline McKenzie is the lawyer that Jenrick was unable or unwilling to name yesterday.

This is her response 🧵 -

1/7 To help me write my autobiography, Conservative Campaign HQs prepared 4 pages of a dossier on me, my cases & membership of organisations, & sent it to the Sunday Sun, Express, Mail & Telegraph; A couple kindly sent me the dossier. What was interesting about it, is that over

BBC news at 10 made a very clear comment that the migrant problem is because of a failure to process asylum requests and not anything else. I thought that was an interesting non-government comment.

I had to turn the news off yesterday, the live footage of people entering the prison barge just was too much to watch.

Can’t help thinking that all the governments language inciting hatred + a not fire safe barge is potentially going to end badly. Really badly.

If it does, Braverman needs to end up in court on a murder charge.

Home Secretary announces task force to target 'crooked' immigration lawyers

While ministers distract with prison boats and anti-lawyer rhetoric, they quietly and deliberately manage the criminal justice system into terminal decline.

Record backlogs, record delays - and a quarter of all Crown Courts unable to operate due to a lack of judges and lawyers.

Urgh. Opened Twitter. In other ‘the government are shit and have broken everything’ news 1/4 of crown courts are not sitting today. This will really help with the backlog.

They aren't interested in fixing issues. It's been 13 years.
All they are left with is grabbing headlines and swearing.

Some sensible suggestions from the Institute for Government - will obviously be ignored by the actual Government. .

Alex Chalk: "Lee is expressing himself in salty terms & is something that people well understand... his central point is not unreasonable"

I can't believe I'm about to defend Braverman, but her comments were in relation to the lawyers who were caught coaching economic migrants on how to pass themselves off as refugees and claim asylum. They were 'cheating the system' and have been struck off as a result.

"Have been struck off as a result" are the important words there. Something like 12 lawyers are involved and have been dealt with, but Braverman is putting forward lawyers as the scapegoats for the massive backlog caused by her department's incompetence. And she wants to set up an expensive "task force" despite the fact that effective mechanisms for weeding out these cases are already in place. Sounds very much like more sinecures for Braverman's friends to me.

Details about the Truss honours list coming out - 'funny' timing given much party business is on hold, Sunak is away & Parliament is in recess. However, the names are still being vetted.

Brexit donor Sir Jon Moynihan who donated £20,000 to her leadership campaign, Mark Littlewood, head of Institute of Economic Affairs and who had input on her budget, Matthew Elliot who ran the Vote Leave campaign & founded Taxpayers Alliance, and her deputy chief of staff Ruth Porter to get life peerages.

Two people turned down the chance to be on her list - one because it would be 'humiliating' and the other because they did not feel that they deserved it.

Times also reporting she's received tens of thousands of pounds from the investment banker who is also behind the right wing Reclaim Party.

But you know the Fire Brigade Union donates to Labour.

Given that she campaigned to remain in the EU, is Eliot getting a knighthood for co-operatively forgetting that inconvenient fact.

Oddly, the person who finds the prospect of an honour from Truss humiliating seems likely to be the only one who deserves it. Clearly the others don't mind a bit of humiliation in return for being called "Sir".

Notonthestairs · 08/08/2023 09:20

At this stage of proceedings I'm pretty sure the Deputy Chairman was instructed to swear in order to snag a bit of attention.
Rather they get headlines for "salty" language than for doing anything useful.

Notonthestairs · 08/08/2023 09:22

"Given that she campaigned to remain in the EU, is Eliot getting a knighthood for co-operatively forgetting that inconvenient fact."
Suspect it's more to do with proving her Brexity credentials - and keeping the right wing donations flowing in to campaigns.

This is SO reminiscent of National Front rhetoric 50 years ago. I can clearly remember comments along the line of "If the P/N-words don't like not getting jobs/homes/education, they should fuck off back home"

itsgettingweird · 08/08/2023 09:38

I've been really thinking deeply about the current situation against the Tory rhetoric.

Problem I feel is that what they are doing in some cases and highlighting isn't things we should be ignoring or not be doing.

It's the language around it that causes people to react. I think it's because they've failed so far and are going on the attack as a form of defence.

Regards the floating hotel. If it was fire safe it really isn't different to housing people in hotels. If they are free to come and go and the food is decent and it's a cheaper alternative I don't have an issue with it personally.

With regards the comments about coming and going within parameters. Again I don't think the concept is terrible - we really don't want the, absconding and being used as slaves or living on the streets and worse still dying there. We do need to make sure we are monitoring movement. But their language is inflammatory rather than a decent explanation of what they mean. And I can see why they need to do it after losing hundreds of refugee children - if they lost refugee adults people would blame them too.

So what I'm saying is they aren't addressing improving things for asylum seekers they are using them for propaganda but they could provide them safe housing on a floating ship that's safe because it's the human thing to do iyswim?

The Rwanda plan - erm NO. Absolutely that ain't something they should be considering or doing. It's not even a plan it's a swap of 200 migrants/asylum seekers for Rwandans for a cost of £140m. It's not even viable numbers wise when the Bobby Stockholm itself is set to house 500.

As for the lawyers coaching them to lie. Again they are right this does need to stop. We do need to have safe routes and we do need to provide asylum for those genuine seeking it. But we also want improvements to our justice system and lawyers encouraging people to lie is unacceptable. It's good they were stuck off. But all this life sentence stuff is absolute bollocks and again just far right rhetoric rather than addressing the underlying issue.

I just wish they'd change their mindset from Stop the boats to something like "provide safe routes", "improve our asylum system".

Anything that does actually stop those people risking their and their families life at sea, does stop the criminal gangs making money from desperate people.

I really want to ask the, when they keep going on about "passing through safe countries" that if war broke out in Western Europe they'd be happy to accept all the French, Belgium, Spanish and Portuguese who would head this way and stop here as the first safe country they got to?!

It's all such a mess and we have such an extreme reaction to it on sauce far sides of the argument that the real need that needs meeting is being missed and when some of the simple things being done to house people are being fought against which causes more rhetoric rather than simple explanations.

Every interview I listen to seems to manage to show horn the words

Lefty lawyers
Putins illegal war on Ukraine
illegal i migrants
First safe country
On the side of British people
And something scathing about Starmer who apparently wants ......

I'm so disenfranchised right now with the country due to the constant propaganda and DO NOT feel like this government is on the side of anyone other than their donors.

Spot on.

Although having read this link that was shared a few days ago, I am not even convinced the government are bothered whether asylum seekers absond or not.

I liked the Star headline today - "Order of the Wet Lettuce" with a revival of the Truss Lettuce as a headline 😂

RafaistheKingofClay · 08/08/2023 13:53

They aren’t bothered. All they are bothered about is the small number of voters that would previously have voted UKIP. Hence the rhetoric.

The boat would be fine except that it’s a death trap that they are overcrowding. And I suspect conditions won’t be that pleasant anyway as it’s supposed to be a deterrent.

DuncinToffee · 08/08/2023 14:12

The barge would have been fine in it's original state, facilitating 122 people.
But that would be far too luxurious and accommodating for the anti migrant crew.

Ofcourse there is an easier and cheaper solution, clear the backlog and provide safe routes.

I'm beginning to think they do things that are extreme so that when they fail (again) they can blame it on opposition being opposed etc.

They literally are willing to fuck with peoples lives for their own gain.

And I'm worried they genuinely believe they can win a GE that way.

And I'm worried they'll play so dirty with their rhetoric propaganda nearer to the GE there is a risk they may just do that.
