I had brunch with John Major today. Well, in the same restaurant to be exact. I so wanted to go over and ask him to tell me candidly what he thought about what the current bunch of thugs have done to the party he used to lead. Tempting though it was I didn’t, it seemed unfair to ambush him.

Sir John's views are fairly well known as he has spoken (out) several times in recent months.

I'd love to know! We met him when we were on hols in Cornwall and he was PM. We just happened to be stood in the spot where he and his entourage walked by and he stopped to speak!
My DD (about 6yo then?) offered him a bite of her cornish pasty Grin He was very nice actually.

There was lots he did wrong, but my goodness, this lot have plumbed the depths

Sunak u-turned on COP27 because of Johnson attendance iirc

I thought it was because he couldn’t leave Hunt to do the job he gave him and sort out Truss’s bodge job? This was the same event that the King was told not to attend I think.

I don’t even think Rishi was a particularly spectacular chancellor either but he seems to fancy himself as the economy guru.

Blossomtoes · 04/08/2023 18:14

Thanks @jgw1.

Talking of plumbing the depths, Braverman has tweeted that Starmer - having criticised the stunt at Sunak's constituency home - should take responsibility and apologise.

Overlooking that it was Greenpeace rather JSO.

Still I am sure we can expect Braverman to take responsibility and apologise for Michelle Mone & family forwith.

AdamRyan · 04/08/2023 23:52

This is just more of their next smear which is the "Labour are the political arm of JSO"
So annoying

In the meantime: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-66387537

Terrifying and the government play politics with the environment while a potential catastrophe unfolds

Going to drive more and more people away from the Tory party. Maybe in her "bubble" , she thinks that's a good thing to tweet but I think that is just going to drive more and more people away from them.

Notonthestairs · 05/08/2023 21:04

It's one hell of a coincidence.
As you say it will need further investigation.
But how terrible for those athletes - and anyone else wanting to use those beaches.

Brexit bonus.

Its the will of the people.

Maybe Sunak doesnt think of himself as a world leader?

Probably scared they'll all blatantly ignore him on the footing that they reckon he won't be around much longer.

Is this part of the hostile environment?

As I read it if you are an asylum seeker and don't respond to the Home Office, the Home Office then just shrug and let you stay in the UK.

Now if you are an asylum seeker and want to regularise your status in the UK this is a problem.

If on the other hand you are an economic migrant (also known as a slave) this plays right into your (your slavemasters) hands. You can stay in the UK.

Given the belief of some that most asylum seekers are economic migrants this does not seem entirely what they may thinking of when it comes to Stop the Boats.

I must bookmark the link for the next time there is an ill informed discussion.

Jenrick's blame Labour is not going well

https://twitter.com/LBC/status/1688129760394670080?s=20

Can you just name the person that you claim in your article is stopping people being deported to Rwanda, who is a mate of Keir Starmer?'

@AndrewCastle63 is baffled by @RobertJenrick's refusal to name the Labour adviser who is allegedly working to prevent the Rwanda policy.

Braverman

Very dangerous language from the Home Secretary. We have a government currently claiming the fire brigade are enemies of the people. They accuse those fighting to uphold the law of "cheating the system" as much as they do those undermining it. This risks attacks on lawyers.

I've looked. Jenrick doesn't name the lawyer in the article. Decent job by Andrew Castle trying to probe his claim.

Jenrick assumes that any legal advisor is personally supportive of any case they work on rather than the reality which they've been employed to provide advice on the legalities.

You'd think Jenrick would be able to understand that given he was a solicitor.
Otherwise he'd have to take some moral responsibility for all of his previous clients.

It's all a bit pathetic really.

Amazing after 13 years they've failed to do anything useful about it.

Notonthestairs · 06/08/2023 12:00

That looks like a fair summing up jgw. Presumably they will have been advised of the likely outcomes but prefer to leave people as slaves.

Notonthestairs · 06/08/2023 12:06

Tory MPs pretending to be something they are not.

I can't believe I'm about to defend Braverman, but her comments were in relation to the lawyers who were caught coaching economic migrants on how to pass themselves off as refugees and claim asylum. They were 'cheating the system' and have been struck off as a result.

It's very odd that its impossible to find out who her parents are. I don't think she's BoJos daughter but I do think there might be some cronyism at play
