I now just skim over that particular poster so I have no idea what they're saying Wink I had realised a while ago that they never contributed anything of value, so it was a waste of my time bothering to read their posts Grin

blueshoes · 17/07/2023 16:02

@ReleaseTheDucksOfWar echo-ing everyone else. We are all in your debt. Just DM-ed you. FlowersFlowersFlowers

ReleaseTheDucksOfWar · 17/07/2023 16:05

Thanks you all .. it has worn me out a bit. I will try to keep going with the roundup but if that gets a bit much too, @blueshoes has very kindly said that she'll take it over for a bit.

But I really don't want to keep on sliding into this unpleasantness. Time to ease back.

BezMills · 17/07/2023 16:18

I've only recently joined the threads but I've been on the Internets long enough to know that a break or a change of scenery can work wonders.
Cheers @ReleaseTheDucksOfWar

RedToothBrush · 17/07/2023 16:30

I have done a long series of threads in the past on MN.
It is well worth taking breaks if you need them.

Take care of yourself first but make sure you know the value of your posting too. Its appreciated.

MagicFox · 17/07/2023 16:44

@ReleaseTheDucksOfWar I echo all the appreciation and care 💐

Ever been delayed at the airport trying to get home? You should never complain again. Look at this thread about how fun a return trip from a holiday in Crimea is via road trip through Ukraine. Don't forget, if you are lucky you might also get to see some fireworks along the way:

Anton Gerashchenko AT Gerashchenko_en
Russian tourist chats are full of panicked Russians who did not get the vacation they desired. I've translated some of their posts below.

"Important information for those who are going to get out of Crimea by land route. The most important thing is to stock up on the necessary amount of water. Local "entrepreneurs" decided to take advantage of this situation and in order to enrich themselves increased the price by 8-10 times!

Being on the territory of Crimea download offline maps, on the territory of Kherson, Zaporizhzhia, Donetsk regions, you can use mobile communication only if you have a SIM-card Phoenix, but there is an option to buy it right in the queue in front of the checkpoint, there they sell them for 2000 rubles.

The situation with toilets is also miserable, free toilets at petrol stations have been closed, they justify themselves by saying that the influx of people is too large, you can make an agreement for 500 roubles, for children, pregnant women, disabled people and participants of the SMO the price is 400 roubles".

"The first border has been passed. Customs. We fuelled up at the last Lukoil petrol station, but there are no toilets there. There are big traffic jams in the opposite direction, towards Rostov. Documents and passports and child's birth certificate were checked at the checkpoint. At the customs there is a toilet and a lot of people on foot with their bags, their bags are checked there like at the airport. For those with cars, only the documents."

"Why didn't they say they guarantee safety on the land road to Crimea, if they can't protect the Crimean bridge, and it's a 50/50 ride there?"

"Yes, Megaphone [cellphone service provider] is completely dead, it doesn't show anything."

"Just yesterday I was thinking what a moron one should be to go on holiday to Crimea now. Well, now the holiday will definitely be remembered when they go home through the front. They are disrupting the logistics of our military with traffic jams, stupid f."

"One thing that annoys me is that after the first time, the competent authorities swore that ordinary people have nothing to fear, that now combat dolphins, medusas, shrimps and plankton guard the bridge 50 hours a day. F**k, how did that happen? !!!!!! Did they screw up again? !!!!!!!!"

"Are there gas stations along the road in the new territories?" Sure. Bandits, too, not just gas stations".

RedToothBrush · 17/07/2023 17:21

Apparently there are currently at least 50,000 Russian tourists in Crimea at the moment. Most went by car. The traffic jam out of Crimea is apparently 25km long according to googlemaps. Oh and don't forget the curfew...

Greenshake · 17/07/2023 17:30

@ducks enjoy a breather. I have learnt a lot from you and it’s much appreciated 🌷

But Donesk is part of Russia, so why would there be customs and passport checks?

It says Kherson, Zaporizzya, Donetsk Regions. Not all of these regions are under Russian occupation at present and either way the ones that are have been illegally proclaimed Russian territory. My blood is still boiling about these pseudo referendums 😡

The biggest problems once peace comes is what to do with Donbas / Luhansk people who support Russia, and the mines. No easy answers, specially to the first.

Well… I have a feeling by the time they are liberated they really won’t care which flag they are living under as long as they get something out if it.

I don’t know if it’s been mentioned here before but most pensioners in Donetsk continued to withdraw Ukrainian pensions (they had to cross the border to do this monthly but Ukraine continued to pay them all these years since 2014) as well as take advantage of the Russian pensions and other welfare benefits they became eligible for. This is the generation that has been most loyal to Russia and Putin.

i don’t have the answer to the mines problem 😞

I don't disagree with anything you have said.
Its just odd given Putin's desire to get people to think of the occupied parts of Ukraine as Russia, that such checks take place.

Russians don’t trust anyone, especially other Russians. Former (temporarily occupied) territories will never be Russian enough for them though.

Besides there are layers of bureaucracy, corruption and money grabbing opportunities (bribery) by the border forces on both sides.

MissConductUS · 17/07/2023 19:02

Great news about the bridge. I'm just surprised they took down the roadways instead of the rail lines, which are more important for military logistics.

They can always try again for the rail lines, but now the element of surprise is lost.

It is not pleasant to have to deal with an unpleasant poster who doesn’t follow the thread guidelines. Hopefully you’ll find a balance of contributing but not to your detriment because you are a valued (key!) contributor 😊

Re the bridge, anyone else bemused by the apparent Russian outrage that Ukraine has had the audacity to shell the Crimean bridge and, gasp, two people died! Absolute class act in manufacturing faux ‘how dare you’ indignation.

Chatillon · 17/07/2023 19:31

I just tried to log in to an account of mine on a secure website and I got to one of those Captcha grids. It said "Tick all squares that contain images of a bridge".

The Kerch Bridge did not appear on any of them.

BezMills · 17/07/2023 19:32

It's really terrible and I shouldn't speak I'll of the dead but what the actual fuck are people thinking driving into Crimea for a summer holiday?

Probably something like, "Well, we promised your mum a beach holiday this summer, and for some reason, the hotels were amazingly cheap this year. Putin's got this under control; they said so on TV."
