In the voice of Cpl Jones.

"Don't panic Capt Sunak"

"Hold your nerve"

"They don't like it up em".

We have a choice between extremely bad alternative outcomes

@Notonthestairs this is such a spectacularly bad idea. I live in a small, nasty, Brexity town full of homophobia where my house has often been a safe place for teens to be themselves because they couldn't be gay at home. And that's just being gay. Way to trap teenagers without anyone safe to talk to!

It is awful, who are teenagers meant to turn to if they are having issues around their gender identity? You are a lovely person for being there for those kids, pointy

pointythings · 20/07/2023 08:47

It's a culture wars dog whistle. It helps nobody, it protects nobody. I think @AdamRyan should be in charge of policy on this issue - we need practical, compassionate, safe policies. No pandering to extremists on both sides.

Pointy - I winced when I read it simply because I imagine any teacher would want to investigate why the child hasn't told their parents and if the child indicates they believe they might be at risk where does that leave the teacher?

The entire thing is a mess for teachers and is progressively being made more messy because the government wants to play Culture Wars with it.

76% of secondary teachers stated they teach someone wo is transgender or non binary. Regardless of what some may believe about the reality of the children's identities, or the permanence of their status, that's a lot of teachers grappling with uncertainties, anxieties and confusion - their own and the children's. There is ZERO clarity about what to do.

What I don't understand is that Farage is complaining that because he is xenophobic and a rabble rouser a bank that requires its customers to have more savings than some people earn in a lifetime won't let him bank with them and this is terrible mean and a breach of his rights, and yet at the same time children who want to be themselves are not allowed to be.

They now seem to be jumping on Coutts bank on behalf of their mate Nige, who advised them on that strategy Confused

Anyone pointed out to Nige the subject access request he was able to make was as a result of EU legislation! 🙄

I don't think any body doubts that children are best placed to be supported if their parents work with schools and other agencies for the best outcome for the child. The trouble arises when parents due to their beliefs wherever they may come from do not work towards the best outcome for their children. What then?

@jgw exactly this. I very nearly had to take in DC2's GF when her mum found out she was gay. It was only because her stepdad intervened that things settled down. And that was a relatively mild case. I wonder whether it will take deaths by suicide of teens to reverse this.

According to one Tory MP the Taliban have transfored Afganistan (for the better) since they took over.
Another has pubically stated that we are educating women to too high a level...

Interesting thread on the by-elections

"🧵By-election day, things I think worth focusing on 1)The swing - we focus on winners but it's arbitrary! If the Tories win or lose Selby by 500 it would still indicate a party in big trouble, ditto Labour winning or losing Uxbridge by 500 would show them really underperforming."

Today is take out the trash day - so let's see what stories are slipped out under cover of the by-election/Coutts/Wotton drama.

Kempsell's one notable achievement was to conduct that 'interview' where Johnson talked about making buses out of wine boxes.

At least there is a photo

Brilliant. That’s excellent.

Notonthestairs · 20/07/2023 13:01

Turns out Ross Kempall also worked as a journalist for Guido Fawkes. I'm sure he'll bring that depth of experience in scrutinising legislation to the Lords.
Yes, I am rolling my eyes.

Boris Johnson has still not given his WhatsApps to the Covid Inquiry, ten days after the High Court deadline passed.

An inquiry spokesman tells me they have not been given any indication to expect their imminent release.

Agree.

Working in education I can see why there needs to be some sort of policy. It was getting to a point half a class would be expecting different pronouns and names all the time and used as it a control way. And I believe that really minimises the experiences of kids who are genuinely struggling.

But to shut down the conversation at all is counter productive too. And ime some pupils questioning their identity aren't actually trans but have other issues going on,are seeking attention and/ or control and need the adults in their life (and sometimes the ones who listen are at school) to support them.

It's not an area that a black and white policy can be drawn up.
