DuncinToffee · 26/06/2023 14:10

In the voice of Cpl Jones.

"Don't panic Capt Sunak"

"Hold your nerve"

"They don't like it up em".

We have a choice between extremely bad alternative outcomes

coincidence that the degree announcement was same day this report was released?

https://www.nao.org.uk/reports/progress-with-the-new-hospital-programme/

Absolutely intended to move attention away from National Audit Report.

itsgettingweird · 18/07/2023 04:41

I've noticed that every time a big report is coming out they release more and more daft stories because those are the ones that get people talking.

Eg the uni degrees.

Notonthestairs · 18/07/2023 07:08

So the Illegal Migration Bill passed.

I imagine the Government are rubbing their hands with glee at the thought of all the court cases - lots more lefty lawyers to blame rather than defective legislation.

Looks like they managed to get their Lords out on the night. Some pressure must have been applied - Julian Fellowes told a Lab peer it was the first time he'd voted in 11 years.

Julian Fellowes told a Lab peer it was the first time he'd voted in 11 years

So he turned up especially to vote for this? What an absolute bastard. Do these people have no empathy?

Notonthestairs · 18/07/2023 07:19

I'm guessing the Whips got on to the phones.

I think if you haven't voted for every 12 (?) months or so and it's not due to ill health etc your vote should be withdrawn.

I appreciate some of them might be out of their depth etc. but in which case they can hand in their spurs and let people committed to reading & understanding legislation get on with it.

Yes I annoyed.

IClaudine · 18/07/2023 07:29

Absolutely agree notonthestairs. I honestly don't understand how they have the gall to turn up just to get this hateful legislation through and then disappear again for another how ever many years. How can they live with themselves?

I despair.

Zonder · 18/07/2023 07:34

Wow. And do we know how JF voted? Ready to boycott Downton Abbey for ever.

Dashdotdotdash · 18/07/2023 07:40

Piggywaspushed · 17/07/2023 15:32

The thing is apparently the 15 month measurement is quite arbitrary. After about 5 to 10 years, some of those alleged low calibre graduates catch up on and even surpass some of the prized degrees. Some of the worst paid graduates with the worst career progression are female scientists...

15 months is ludicrous. I have a law degree from a Russell group university, but I then had to take a year to get a professional qualification and then had a 6 month break. So if they'd included me in the 15 month stats I would have had a zero income showing how crappy that degree was. Unsurprisingly, my career since then has been absolutely fine.

Notonthestairs · 18/07/2023 07:47

I don't know how he voted Zonder.
It won't just be him - there will be many that never vote (too busy/not interested in specific legislation/don't feel equipped to judge/lazy) but get wheeled out in emergencies and just follow orders.
It's not really how we should develop legislation.

Kiwano · 18/07/2023 07:47

It just feels so utterly pointless that the Illegal Migration Bill has passed. They can't send anyone to Rwanda unless and until the Supreme Court differs from the Appeal Court, and we all know the next government is never going to send anyone there. It's just going to be yet more money in legal challenges, payments to Rwanda to keep them on board, and jollies for Braverman. Even the name of the Act is stupid, given that asylum seeking isn't illegal.

Notonthestairs · 18/07/2023 07:50

So they'll detain indefinitely whilst they wait for Rwanda legislation to go through the courts? That can't be legal.

I have to say I assumed it was the Illegal Migration Bill because the Bill was illegal not the Migration.

He voted with the government. I assume the not content votes were all about voting against proposed amendments to the bill.

Even the name of the Act is stupid, given that asylum seeking isn't illegal.

This is the bit we need to get wheeled out so much more.

The propaganda around it being illegal immigrants because a few are economic migrants is just so against human rights.

Let's ignore most people are risking their lives because it's the only way they feel they can have a better life because they are seeking asylum. Seeking safety.

If you just wanted an extra dollar in your pocket you wouldn't risk you life on a boat to come to a country that's actually in the middle of a CoL crisis.

And the first barge will today arrive at Plymouth Sad

The UN have just released a statement about the govt’s migration bill passed last night…

They call for the U.K. to reverse it, as it effectively treats those fleeing war and persecution as sub-human.

Just when you thought this govt couldn’t sink any lower!

Is Miriam Cates meant to admit the real reason why they don't want people to go to uni??

I have to say I assumed it was the Illegal Migration Bill because the Bill was illegal not the Migration.

Yes, the capital letters are wrong. It should be illegal Migration Bill. The illegal is just and adjective describing the bill.

Obviously we need to leave the UN.

Cornettoninja · 18/07/2023 10:49

So are university fees going fall under the ‘politics of envy’ banner now?

I’m old and fucked but I’m increasingly ready for a full on French style revolution. I’m so exhausted by these fuckers thinking they’re some sort of superior creature because of some numbers on a computer screen that have no existence in reality. Society is entirely by consent, we all have to agree to concepts to live by and these soulless arseholes just have to fuck it up.

(I’m a bit ranty this morning!)

I’ve never witnessed so many international rebukes to the UK as I have in the past ten years.

IClaudine · 18/07/2023 11:13

Anyone who thinks this barge is OK has no humanity.

But there are still millions of people who think everything that is happening is fine and dandy. It is horrifying.

I am scared that they could still get in again.

IClaudine · 18/07/2023 11:20

I honestly can't believe what is happening. It is surreal. How has it come to this?
