In the voice of Cpl Jones.

"Don't panic Capt Sunak"

"Hold your nerve"

"They don't like it up em".

I think The Onion ran into the same problem

Zonder · 18/07/2023 22:47

I'm a bit disappointed in KS through all this. He is not the man I thought he was going to be.

mibbelucieachwell · 19/07/2023 00:28

He's desperately courting right wing conservative voters. When he first became labour leader I remember him being asked what his mission was and he was very clear that his aim above everything else was get into government. I assume he feels left wing voters will vote for the Labour Party anyway.

I hope his strategy of being seen to not break manifesto commitments pays off. Cos he has a disappointing lack of them if you ask me and he's going to be PM ( hopefully) during a very difficult time. I'm clinging on to the hope that he's politically savvy in these depressing times.

countrygirl99 · 19/07/2023 04:15

It's the permanent dilemma for Labour leaders. Properly left wing policies would just condemn us to another 5 years of the Tories.

Zonder · 19/07/2023 07:02

Well he's losing 3 labour voters in our house. He could afford to actually have a moral backbone and still be favorite to win a GE I think.

Even though in 'blind testing' most people's beliefs are more left wing than the way they vote, apparently...

He hasn't got any manifesto promises out yet because we are a way from the GE and if he puts his main promises out now the Tories will have plenty of time to neutralise them (either by stealing them or developing a counter narrative).

I think his strategy at the moment is to give the conservatives enough rope to hang themselves and it appears to be working....

itsgettingweird · 19/07/2023 07:20

I agree.

He also says a lot that he's had to change ideas because the state of the country gets worse and he doesn't want to be in a position of having to break manifesto promises because there's other things to do first.

I get what people are saying though about him appearing disappointing.

However I felt that when he first faced Johnson at PMQs until it became clear he's very clever with regards he line of position and his lawyer skills are very handy in this respect.

Notonthestairs · 19/07/2023 07:25

They've got another 18 (?) months of Daily Mail/Telegraph/GB News headlines to combat.
And a Tory party busy storing up trouble for the next Government.
There isn't a single element of public services functioning well.

I'm not at all surprised that the Labour Party are watching & waiting.

countrygirl99 · 19/07/2023 07:57

@Piggywaspushed it always puzzles me. My parents always voted Tory. Their argument was that Labour regulate too much but as soon as something happened that impacted them they moaned that there should be a law against it.

How much money did they waste on this

https://twitter.com/AliFortescue/status/1681307596811292674?t=Y59PEl0tBcht2VYk6g_acg&s=19

EXCL: Two giant cruise ships set to house 1,000 asylum seekers have not found anywhere to dock and been returned to the company that owns them, a senior source has told Sky news.

How on earth could that happen? Surely it's just basic to make sure you've got a dock before you spend a fortune on hiring a dirty great cruise ship?

Kiwano · 19/07/2023 08:05

The Tories are desperate for Labour to produce their policies so that they can either nick them or try to undermine them. It's noticeable in interviews that their line when challenged is "Well, Labour hasn't come up with a policy on this" ignoring the fact that it's not Labour's job to produce solutions to Tory problems - or at least not yet.

L1ttledrummergirl · 19/07/2023 08:11

Anybody who still believes these conservatives are actually conservatives in anything but name is deluded. They have damaged the country immeasurably, for fucks sake, they are actually proud when charities open food banks! Charities operating in one of the richest countries in the world to feed the working population.

They have eroded the public sector to the point that they caused a refugee crisis by cutting back on immigration staff, and used public money to pay their mates at inflated rates to house them. When, no surprise, this got out of hand, they chose to demonise vulnerable people rather than actually get there shit together and create safe, legal routes that prevented desperate people from drowning in the channel, or suffocating in the backs of lorries.

They ploughed record amounts of money into the NHS which they diverted off to their friends could buy yachts (sounds like Russian oligarchs). The NHS is on its knees, teachers are desperate, schools are falling down and rather than think long term, they are scrimping on materials so we will be in the same situation in 30 years.

Sunak is so far removed from reality that he would rather spend public money on a helicopter or private jet than use better materials to build a hospital. Even the childminder incentive is run in a way that encourages people to use a business that he benefits from.

They think we are stupid enough to believe their lies, I have more faith in the British electorate and will be happy when they fuck off after being kicked out in the elections which can't come soon enough.

This is without the partying while the Queen sat alone to bury her husband, along with the rest of the population, the rising interest rates (thanks Liz Truss), the record energy profits that we are paying for, food inflation etc.

If you still believe they are the right people to run the country at this point, nothing will allow you to evaluate evidence and adapt your thinking, you are to heavily invested in them and the the lying, theiving, self-important, self serving, incompetent bunch and rather than try to say look at the evidence, I just wonder what's in it for you.

I don't understand the narrative that Labour doesn't have any policies.
The Tories haven't, other than enriching their mates, for 13 years.

This is what I think too although it’s a two pronged attack. KS does the rounds and quite reasonably points out that any policy he elaborates on right now a) might not be possible by the time the GE finally rolls around (who knows what else this cabinet are going to do) b) and he’s not going to make any more promises without knowing whether or not he’ll actually be able to keep them. The times I’ve seen him speak he’s been quite clear about this in particular.

Problem is there are no good scenarios right now so the tories are seizing the opportunity to lie their tits off and promote the idea Labour (or anyone else for that matter) hasn’t got any proposals for sorting out their catastrophic mess.

Notonthestairs · 19/07/2023 08:24

How much did those boats cost? We will have paid for them, paid for shipping costs (pun intended), paid whilst they waited to find somewhere to dock, paid for them to be returned. How can they have paid for all that without arranging where they would stay?

It's understandable that voters are chomping at the bit for good news. So I can understand why people want to know now that change is on the horizon.

But until the election is announced Labour are better off sitting on their hands and letting the Conservatives slug it out between themselves.
The Conservatives can't rely on their record - 13 years and what do they - or we - have to show for it. Instead they are a factional mess relying on stoking up culture wars and personal attacks all whilst undermining their own 'bent' leader.

And we are stuck with them for now.

Presumably those three Labour voters want another five years of this shitshow then. I’d vote for the devil to get shot of this lot.

pointythings · 19/07/2023 08:50

@Zonder you see, this is the big risk - people demanding pie in the sky now rather than being pragmatic and accepting that the long game needs to be played. If the Tories get in again because of people like that, there will be no forgiveness.

Zonder, I know exactly how the trio feel . But ow do they (and you if it includes you)intend to vote ? I think I ma a) Tories out first then b) hope Labour shifts a bit once in power.

Piggywaspushed · 19/07/2023 09:58

Am feeling v cynical today about the timing of the announcement of new jobs in Somerset. By election tomorrow anyone?

Blossomtoes · 19/07/2023 10:05

I think (hope) the people of Somerset are sufficiently cynical to see right through that.
