In the voice of Cpl Jones.

"Don't panic Capt Sunak"

"Hold your nerve"

"They don't like it up em".

We have a choice between extremely bad alternative outcomes

I will be very interested to see the results of the 3 by elections tomorrow/next day. Hopefully we have enough room on this thread to discuss it!

Pretty nauseating to see Mr. Sean Partygate Bailey taking his seat in the HoL yesterday.

I think (hope) the people of Somerset are sufficiently cynical to see right through that.

And wasn't it awarded to Spain but the Govt paid a huge amount to get them here?

'sources said a significant level of subsidy has been provided, which are likely to be in the form of cash grants, discounts on the cost of energy, and training and research funding. The size of the incentive package has not been disclosed.'

Blossomtoes · 19/07/2023 10:10

The first - and only - comment on the local paper website isn’t encouraging.

When will councils stop retail parks - they kill city centres and local shopping areas. The council and the government tell us we need to be green and put new laws and taxes on the working person , as we are the cause of gobal warming (really) yet they allow these schemes that make you use a car to get to ! Says it all really

DuncinToffee · 19/07/2023 10:12

I will have been a significant bribe sum

Did the Chancellor really just say he cannot tell the country how much this electric battery plant will cost, in subsidies and incentives, how much of our money is going into it, because it's "commercially sensitive"?

OP posts:
Roussette · 19/07/2023 10:14

Course it's a pre GE bribe! They will keep bringing this up, no doubt, whilst hiding how much this cost the country.

The Tories are desperate for Labour to produce their policies so that they can either nick them or try to undermine them. It's noticeable in interviews that their line when challenged is "Well, Labour hasn't come up with a policy on this" ignoring the fact that it's not Labour's job to produce solutions to Tory problems - or at least not yet.

Yes!

It was really noticeable during Covid. Vacant flailing by the Tory government, then shortly after Labour or the SNP had suggested something it would pop up as Tory policy. It started to feel as if Labour were in power though not in office. (Though obviously the Tories kept the important things like bunging money to their mates.)

Also shades of this:

It does not surprise me about farmers, Liz Webster is very vocal on this.

On the Tata deal...
This from Sky's business editor#
Simon Jack: UK-taxpayers are giving £500 million to Jaguar Land Rover owners Tata.

In a cost of living crisis, we will pay them to build a factory and they will keep the profits.

Blossomtoes · 19/07/2023 08:31

Presumably those three Labour voters want another five years of this shitshow then. I’d vote for the devil to get shot of this lot.

Of course not. It's LD anyway who will get in here. So we will vote for them. Or Green.

@pointythings and @Piggywaspushed it's a tough decision but made easier by the fact that LD are more likely to oust Tories here. And hopefully KS will have shone a bit more by the time of the GE.

Notonthestairs · 19/07/2023 10:53

Tata have been given £500 million.

Spain refused to go higher than £350.

I like that cartoon @PerkingFaintly Grin

Windfall taxes are also another example of something that absolutely came from Labour.

Gosh, WhatsApp messages, travel costs, foreign investment - there’s so much sensitivity around this government it’s a wonder they can converse in public at all.

Interesting that says 'British'. Pretty sure Scottish farmers have never been in love with the Tories.

Suggests that more than a £500million bung (125,000 per job it creates) will be needed to turn the tide in the by-election.

DuncinToffee · 19/07/2023 13:09

Covid Inquiry, long thread

Monday was another damning day for the government at the Covid Inquiry.

It is becoming clearer what the recommendations from the Inquiry are likely to be…

But there is also a bigger question raised about criminality…

https://twitter.com/danielgoyal/status/1681625486395424771?t=jtCD-uks8UY2u2oZ2hdmsg&s=19

Summary
It is likely that one of the major findings of this Inquiry will relate to the underinvestment in public services and infrastructure. The policies imposed by the Conservative Govt from 2010 onwards are likely to be heavily blamed for the carnage of the pandemic response.

I've found someone who shares Cates' views

"Russian Health Minister Murashko: women should give birth earlier rather than pursue education and careers
The minister believes that postponing childbirth until after education and the creation of a material base is a "vicious practice" that allegedly causes infertility and miscarriage.
Murashko noted that it is necessary to review the situation and explain to women that the earlier they can give birth, "the better it is for the health of the woman herself, for the health of her children and her career"."

Russian demographic patterns are highly desirable, of course.

Rishi Sunak is holding drinks at Downing Street tonight for "select" political journalists.

Under previous Prime Ministers these events were open to all accredited journalists, whether they worked for 'friendly' publications, or not.

Not under Sunak

twitter.com/adambienkov/status/1681670411187019776?s=46&t=Uw4lJNwxFZFnX0Xs3doHYg

Prepping them for Thursday/Friday headlines.

Accountability etc etc.

Blossomtoes · 19/07/2023 16:43

That’s such a stupid thing to do. Antagonising already “unfriendly” publications is a sure fire way of ensuring they step up their adverse coverage. Who the hell is advising them?

Some 20th century relic from his yacht next to yet another gullible woman getting ready to be his wife.

Just a guess.

RafaistheKingofClay · 19/07/2023 16:53

I think it’s been clear for some time that the Tory party don’t have anyone advising them. Or even in control of them.

Historically the Tory party haven’t checked that the people they are paying have ships, so ships but no docks seems like an improvement in their organisation skills.

DuncinToffee · 19/07/2023 17:43

They now seem to be jumping on Coutts bank on behalf of their mate Nige, who advised them on that strategy Confused

@Piggywaspushed don't know about farmers in Scotland in general, but they and the high quantity of English in the south east gave us the delightful Alister Jack... most of the farmers here seem to love him.

Piggywaspushed · 19/07/2023 18:10

Yes, but that did used to be liberal country. Rural Scotland always used to be yellow.

I feel your pain. He's my DF's MP too!
