DuncinToffee · 26/06/2023 14:10

In the voice of Cpl Jones.

"Don't panic Capt Sunak"

"Hold your nerve"

"They don't like it up em".

We have a choice between extremely bad alternative outcomes

Warning - very long and ultimately depressing thread about short & longer term for the UK.
I nodded along with a lot of it.

In a nutshell - Labour will inherit such a mess that they won't be able to make enough of a difference to persuade enough voters to vote them in again in the next but one election. Cos Brexit and the press. I was absolutely nodding along too @Notonthestairs

The myth of the Conservative Party being the party of good financial management is absolutely infuriating.

Notonthestairs · 10/07/2023 12:43

Excellent summing up.
Yes the Conservatives will leave an unholy mess and systems in tatters.
Then spend 5 years barracking Labour for not fixing their mess with the RW media chomping at the bit - lo and behold voters forget where the mess stemmed from and vote the Conservatives back in. They only thing I disagree with is that the Conservatives will return to the centre ground because I think whoever is left will be bankrolled by the far right.

Notonthestairs · 10/07/2023 12:44

Sorry that should say 'whoever is left in the Conservative party will be bankrolled'...

Notonthestairs · 10/07/2023 12:49

Well somebody had to say it...

"It's a "significant sizeable wing" of the Conservative Party that's "completely and utterly insane"

Conservative Peer Lord Vaizey says calls for tax cuts by some Tory MPs are "totally barmy"

That thread is a tough read, but it's not entirely without hope. We will need a twin focus of activism: rejoin SM and CU and push for PR.
It's unlikely but not impossible.

Blossomtoes · 10/07/2023 13:26

I felt like slitting my throat after reading that, not least because I can’t disagree with any of it. My only hope is that they’re so decimated in the next election that it will take them at least two terms to regroup.

Macavity Sunak

https://twitter.com/AdamBienkov/status/1678367059913179137?t=qGYHl2K74PApPp7nAK7cLg&s=19

BREAKING: Rishi Sunak will not take part in the debate and potential vote on the Privilege Committee report suggesting seven of his MPs may have been in contempt of Parliament.

His spokesman declines to tell me what the PM's view is on the report or if he has even yet read it.

Honesty integrity and all that...

Weak, weak, weak.

Blossomtoes · 10/07/2023 13:52

Christ, has Sunak got a view on anything? Macavity is spot on.

DuncinToffee · 10/07/2023 13:55

Two more things to keep an eye on today

  • Illegal Migration Bill ends in the Lords - will they add to the 20 amendments before it returns to the Commons tomorrow
  • 4pm is the deadline for all diaries and Whatsapp messages to be passed to Covid Inquiry

I don't understand why Johnson still has the phone. Surely he should have handed it to Cabinet Office to deal with?

Yes there is a path through but despite public acknowledgement that Brexit has been crap I think it's going to need further disruption to tip it over the edge. I guess that might come by the end of the year when the border rules are fully introduced.

"Jacob Rees Mogg, "When we try and silence people because they say things we do not like. We risk, looking, ridiculous."

Quite. Mogg the hypocrite.

Notonthestairs · 10/07/2023 18:35

I assume Sunak had the debate regarding the Privileges Committee Report scheduled for when he knew he couldn't make it.
Cowardly but predictable.

L1ttledrummergirl · 10/07/2023 18:39

What is the point of Sunak? Refuses to turn up to debates, refuses to turn up for PMqs, is given the run around by his MPs who continue to lie to parliament, seems to prefer to help schools in America than in his own constituency.

I understand that he's very good at lining the pockets of his donors and family members, and of using the influence of his position to further his families ambition, particularly in tech, but as far as the majority of the British people are concerned, what is the point of him? He seems to have no understanding of what the job role entails.

StormShadow · 10/07/2023 18:43

Nice suits. Other than that I'm stumped.

Going by twitter comments, Farbricant, Patel and Jenkyns aren't faring much better.

If the next government reform the electoral system, the Tories will be ruined.Grin

Notonthestairs · 10/07/2023 20:13

I know nothing about Laura Farris but well said that woman -

"Harriet Harman appears teary-eyed as Tory MP @Laura__Farris pays tribute to her work and reminds the Commons she took up the role of privileges committee chair not long after her husband died."

It's quite something when we applaud a Tory for being decent and showing integrity
