In the voice of Cpl Jones.

"Don't panic Capt Sunak"

"Hold your nerve"

"They don't like it up em".

We have a choice between extremely bad alternative outcomes

I agree @Blossomtoes. I think Rishi is at the point of churlishness because things aren’t going his way all of the time and there’s very little respect for him inside and outside parliament. I don’t think it suits his preferred way of operating at all.

I think he much prefers flying under the radar able to dodge negative consequences and revel in the positive ones.

Unfortunately for the tories they haven’t got any cards left to play for another leadership race. If they dared to trigger one the pressure for a GE would be too much to ignore. (Part of me hopes they try).

L1ttledrummergirl · 08/07/2023 11:16

I'm finally catching up with question time. Wtf is Mercer on? Bombastic, rude and dense.

I'm agreeing with Dale Vince and that's worrying, it's never happened before.

StormShadow · 08/07/2023 11:20

What I think is a pretty big deal is that because the Tories are facing such a wipeout, there are many more MPs than usual with nothing to lose. The current predictions have them on 100 seats. That's the sort of drubbing a party can't even assume they'll come back from. It's not the sort of result where most of you will still keep your seats and you can reasonably anticipate a useful few years in opposition getting your shit back together. It's a genuinely existential threat.

Roussette · 08/07/2023 11:31

The Jenrick thread is shocking from defenders of his cruel painting over of welcoming pictures.

In other news... Johnson's by election... candidates have released their video manifestos.

Count Binface who stood against BJ in 2019 (who can forget the pictures when the result was declared!) is standing again.
His manifesto....
Bringing back Ceefax
Capping the price of croissants to £1 to bring down inflation
And his flagship policy is to move the hand drier in the Crown & Treaty pub in Uxbridge to a more sensible position.

Quality!

Labour is 8 points ahead in Uxbridge,

Roussette · 08/07/2023 11:34

Oh... and meant to add. I am hoping Count Binface beats Laurence Fox. That would be awesome!

tobee · 08/07/2023 11:38

How long has Dorries been dragging this out for now? Her resignation?

StormShadow · 08/07/2023 11:42

tobee · 08/07/2023 11:38

How long has Dorries been dragging this out for now? Her resignation?

Four weeks now.

I don't think she's going anywhere though. She's not going to get the outcome she wants from her Subject Access Request, because the relevant legislation doesn't apply to peerage related stuff. That will become apparent within the next month.

At that point she can either take the L and resign or waste more time with pointless appeals to the ICO and/or ultimately doomed Freedom of Information requests. I feel very sorry for her constituents, but it's going to be Option B isn't it?

DuncinToffee · 08/07/2023 11:54

Anyone surprised?

So after promising a new era of "integrity" and "grown up" politics, Rishi Sunak now plans to resurrect exactly the same disgraceful smears used by Boris Johnson against his opponents.

My jaw dropped when I saw that. Does he really think something that went so appallingly for Johnson would land better for him? Does he not remember Munira Mirza resigning and Johnson having to backtrack? And the global approbation it attracted?

DuncinToffee · 08/07/2023 12:30

He will probably leave it to the likes of 30p Lee rather than mention it himself, Starmer would make mincemeat of him in PMQs

The desperation is palpable.

Blossomtoes · 08/07/2023 12:58

It certainly is. Just when you think they’ve sunk to the depths, they manage to find new ones.

I’m shocked he think he can pull that off. It’s going to be embarrassing as f if he does.

I genuinely think that a half decent MP may be able make him cry with a rebuttal if he tries it.

I started a politics a level (in the very dark and distant past) and remember the teacher opening with ‘during this course you will understand why the Lib Dem’s are unlikely to be in power again’. Fascinating to think future politics teachers might be opening with that exact line substituting Lib Dem’s for tories.

Presumably Sunak will start by coming out with a firm statement that it is not acceptable to be a sex pest in Parliament and vocally lead by example if the opportunity arises to suspend such a pest from Parliament?

countrygirl99 · 08/07/2023 14:41

Does Sunak do firm statements on anything?

Actions have consequences

I and my constituents remain of the view that Wethersfield is an unsuitable site. Our local services are stretched and the scale of the development will have a significant impact upon the local community
