In the voice of Cpl Jones.

"Don't panic Capt Sunak"

"Hold your nerve"

"They don't like it up em".

Cates on R4 this morning

https://twitter.com/Haggis_UK/status/1675782139424415744?t=O4AmNhhy_9czX7ifaLGRFw&s=19

Mishal Husain completely stumps Miriam Cates(Tory MP/New Conservative Group) when she asks what the hourly rate should be for a residential care home worker.

"I don't know what they should be paid, what do you think we should pay"

Why is Cates even on R4 discussing policy. It isn’t a government policy. There’s no reason it should be getting airtime.

I am disappointed. I am sure we all wanted Cates to go onto say that the problem is too many girls going to university and if instead they knew their place and went into low paid work in care homes until they had children everything would be much better.

Obviously you are right.
But when the Government is so inert news programmes have to trawl for what is available. And that's how the grifters get in.
I don't suppose they had anyone from Department of Health and Social care to counteract the nonsense?

DuncinToffee · 03/07/2023 10:23

Apparently it is day 2 of the Judicial review, Cabinet Office vs Covid Inquiry

It's very quiet about that

Tbf, the government is thinking long term here. They know that their policies will shorten lives significantly, thereby reducing the need for care homes.

L1ttledrummergirl · 03/07/2023 11:03

Sue Gray has been found to have broken the civil service code by speaking to Starmer. That's disappointing as I'm hoping Labour show higher standards than the conservatives have. It will be interesting to hear what Starmer has to say about this, will he treat it with the seriousness it deserves, or behave like the tories and brush it under the carpet? How he handles this is really important.

Cornettoninja · 03/07/2023 11:08

That’s an interesting turn @L1ttledrummergirl. I agree that Starmar will have to handle this one carefully.

Frustrating though when initiated by the worst hypocrites of this century so far.

DuncinToffee · 03/07/2023 11:11

Who to believe, ACOBA or Simon Case?

Prima facie means 'at first sight'. This motion would mean no more than she may have breached the civil service code. What's the point of such a motion? And will they be laying similar motions for the many ministers who may have breached the Ministerial Code?

OP posts:
L1ttledrummergirl · 03/07/2023 11:17

It may mean that, but that sounds as though someone is minimising it and sweeping it under the carpet. I hope Starmer is better than that.

Notonthestairs · 03/07/2023 11:17

Well given Braverman actually broke the Ministerial code I'd recommend a one week suspension and then the offer of her job back.

L1ttledrummergirl · 03/07/2023 11:19

We are used to the tories low bar, as Michelle Obama says, "when they go low, you go high".
He needs to offer a better explanation, otherwise it smacks of more of the same.

DuncinToffee · 03/07/2023 11:41

Reminder

Acoba clears Sue Gray to work as Keir Starmer’s chief of staff after 6 months gardening leave:

  • No evidence her impartiality was impaired

  • Contact with Starmer in October 2022 was not improper

  • Says govt briefings against Gray risked damaging ‘fair & confidential’ process

So who ran the enquiry for the latest Sue Grey news?

DuncinToffee · 03/07/2023 12:47

So many dead cat stories at the moment

This is from the Times a couple of days ago - rings true.

Times read:

Despair, torpor and apathy on Tory benches as numbers on economy, migration & in polls head wrong way

Red Wall Tory MP: ‘I’m working on my CV. It’s dead.

‘There are no new ideas, levelling up has disappeared, 5 pledges are going backwards’

A former Cabinet minister said their main priority now is to limit scale of defeat:

‘We are playing to be a credible opposition now

‘It’s the difference between 180 Tory MPs and 250. If it’s 180 we’re out for ten years’

twitter.com/steven_swinford/status/1675055673682395137?s=46&t=Uw4lJNwxFZFnX0Xs3doHYg

Doesn't really explain why they are trying to make mileage out of Grey. They seemed super happy with her report when they got it.

What has Kier Starmer done wrong?

The cabinet office aren't objecting to him phoning Sue Gray

But to her not telling them he'd phoned her

Which is a bit weird isn't it?

The ERG have been a party within a party for years, so why shouldn't another group of loons do the same?

DuncinToffee · 03/07/2023 13:37

Only a few weeks ago they were identifying as Nat C's, see how long they last as the New Cons

So all these parties and parties within parties can hold investigations and expect them to have pariety alongside commissioned independent ones? Slap the word ‘investigation’ on it and that’s what gives it credibility?

Notonthestairs · 03/07/2023 13:56

V silly statement from HMG on the Sue Gray issue.

4 problems with it:

  1. The properly constituted Acoba process said that Gov’t hadn’t provided any evidence of a breach of impartiality, even when asked
  1. By contrast, HMG ‘investigation’ finds only a ‘prima facie’ case… 1/3

in other words, nothing is proved;

  1. There is no publicly available account of the standing of this ‘investigation’, of what its processes were, or how the conclusions were reached (in marked contrast to ACOBA). No evidence of any kind is adduced to support its findings

2/3

  1. Successive Govts have a long-standing convention of not commenting on personnel matters.

That now becomes harder to sustain in future cases thanks to this precedent.

And for what benefit to either the Gov’t or the wider public interest?

They are such a bloody mess.
Of all the waste of time and manpower (not that it looks like a great deal of actual thought has been put in to it),

Simon Case and Oliver Dowden are useless twerps.
