Coke is pointless

Whatajokr · 12/06/2023 14:06

I'm late 40s. On Saturday I had 3 lines of coke over the space of 2 hours. First time in my life I've ever had drugs.

It did absolutely nothing for me. Pointless waste of time and money.

My friend, who takes it recreationally every few months, asked if I could feel the buzz, or the energy it gave me. Nope.

Nothing. Nada. Zilch.

I'll be sticking to alcohol as my drug of choice. Why people waste their money on that stuff I'll never know.

I tried it once with DP, when the relationship was on its last legs, and I was trying to be 'fun' to stop the relationship finally dying (he did it quite often with his friends).

I also got nothing from it.

And nothing (apart from pain relief) from a shot of morphine in hospital, or from codeine.

never tried pot (can't see the appeal in smoking, never had the opportunity to try edibles), so I can't say if that does anything to me.

I wonder if it's a bit like cats and catnip - some of them go wild for it, some it has no effect on at all.

Cocaine is not an opiate. It is a stimulant that works by stopping the re-uptake of dopamine and serotonin, two neurotransmitters associated with pleasure and reward, hence the quick, intense and short-lived high.

You are correct. Stimulants speed up your central nervous system. Opioids slow it down.

Hocuspocusnonsense · 12/06/2023 16:30

I don’t know why people waste their money on coke or alcohol.

But, a word of warning!

I was lucky enough to be late teens/early 20’s at the height of the rave scene and spent many. many night and days 😀 dancing around a field/warehouse/illegal rave and club. I spent a few years ‘experimenting’ and grew out of it.

I have several friends who didn't and they’ve chosen to experiment, although mainly with Coke, in their 30’s and 40’s and they have out of control habits now. And I really do mean out of control habits. But at a time in their lives when they have children and financial responsibilities.

Just be really careful, everyone starts somewhere ere.

I may be missing the point but if you'd never done it before why the bejeezus would you do three lines in two hours??

To see if it started working?

PearlClutzsche · 12/06/2023 15:22

@tattygrl around 25,000 people are murdered every year in Columbia alone as a result of the cocaine industry. 25,000.
Most are not traffickers or smugglers but farmers or peasants caught up in the fighting between Marxist guerrillas, right-wing paramilitaries and the Colombian armed forces. The conflict has seen teachers, trade unionists and human rights activists slaughtered in their hundreds.

25,000 humans murdered per year in just one cocaine producing country

And you’re fine with this?

Which of the other industries that you are alluding to is even remotely comparable?

I'm not condoning illegal drug taking but pollution and particulate emissions cause the deaths of up to 40,000 people in the UK each year.

CrazyArmadilloLady · 12/06/2023 16:38

Look at you all, fighting amongst yourselves…

@Whatajokr - wind ‘em up and watch ‘‘em go, eh?

Any intention of coming back to the thread you started?

Clipboard007 · 12/06/2023 16:39

Using the argument that other stuff is bad so taking drugs is fine is a really weird argument. This thread is about drugs and it's good to have a discussion about how many millions of lives it destroys, it might make a few people think differently about trying or taking them, surely that's a good thing.

Don't justify supporting the drugs trade. Own it and try to stop. Somebody else supporting other bad industries, doesn't give you a justified reason to continue. It is highly unlikely you are unaware of the issues of taking drugs.

We should all endeavour to improve the welfare of others. It's not a race to the bottom. Maybe posters don't know about the deaths in the clothes or diamond trade. Come on here with stats and educate us, so we can all improve and work together.

Enfys1982 · 12/06/2023 16:39

I can’t be the only person who thinks taking class A drugs in your late 40’s hoping to get a ‘buzz’ is absolutely fucking pathetic? Honestly I usually couldn’t give a shit what people do, but IME coke makes people act like twats so I judge users quite harshly.

I came here expecting a thread about a refreshing beverage!

Same … how innocent are we?! 🤣

Pressthespacebar · 12/06/2023 16:42

It must’ve been shit stuff if it did a something tbh. Most stuff is “pub grub” these days.

Whatajokr · 12/06/2023 16:43

Cosycover · 12/06/2023 16:33

To see if it started working?

Exactly that. It didn't.

It was top notch stuff. He wouldn't do anything less than the best.

Nor would he snort something he thought was below par and certainly not talcum powder to try to play a joke on me.

I'd love to stick to sugar highs from cake, however the menopausal tummy needs continual taming.

And Coca Cola can't do the trick, as I haven't had caffeinated drinks for years.

Love the fact this thread quickly turned into the typical Mumsnet Judgemental rant. You can't just muse out loud on here, can you? Always the hoard of voices to come along and pearl clutch and tell you just how wrong you are. I'm glad I've still got an open mind about life.

Thank you to those who posted to say it does nothing for you either - glad to know it's not just me.

Some of us work and don't live on Mumsnet judging others all through the day. 😉

Precisely. The very technology you are typing on and the seat you bum is most likely sitting on to the pants covering that bum. Almost everything we use and consume is built on slave / child labour in extreme poverty so unless you are acutely aware of that it’s a bit hypocritical really.

You do a good line in whataboutery. Let's call it denial.

PumpkinsAndCoconuts · 12/06/2023 16:51

tattygrl · 12/06/2023 14:31

Sounds like it wasn't very good, or maybe you have ADHD? Some people with ADHD find it doesn't effect them and/or actually makes them feel more normal 😄

Which is also a reason why people with adhd are more likely to develop dependency issues when (consciously or not) trying to self-medicate.

My SO once took ritalin with his friends (when he was young and irresponsible). He can't believe that I can fall asleep right after and within a few hours of taking it.

Alcohol however gives me a boost. Makes me feel perky (or hyper, if I have too much), talk active, smiley etc. depending on the amount. I sometimes wonder whether that's what stimulants feel like to people without adhd... (seeing as alcohol is a depressant.)

And people comparing it to oil or mobile phones…we actually need those things to work/live. Nobody in the world needs Coke.

@Whatajokr I recommend you read American Dirt by Jeanine Cummins, it's a work of fiction but gives great insight into the non-party side of cocaine - people may have died so that you and your friend could indulge yourself on Saturday, it's a filthy trade and you and your friend are part of the problem.

Great book

PearlClutzsche · 12/06/2023 14:12

There are far bigger and more important reasons to avoid taking illegal drugs, especially opiates, than “it didn’t do anything for me”.

Presumably, had you felt any “good” effects you’d have been happy to continue to support a murderous, violent and exploitative trade.

THANK YOU.

And thank you for saying this before the 'oh so cool' I take drugs all the time people arrived.

Birds and bees and all the flowers and trees and fishes on the line?

DH knew someone who was very fond of cocaine, and who died suddenly of a heart attack three weeks after his 60th birthday. Not a scientific sample, I know.

timetorefresh · 12/06/2023 16:58

Why the fuck would you randomly do that. The pain and suffering causes by the drugs trade should be enough to put anyone off

I mean, no, it’s not.

People who don’t do coke also have heart attacks, and at younger ages than that.

You have missed the point. Apparently it is ok accordingly to some posters because everything else is harmful and everybody is a hypocrite.

Google whataboutery.

I dont think anyone is pretending that the drug industry isnt harmful?

But they're doing verbal gymnastics to justify cocaine use by saying that some people's jeans are made from unethically sourced cotton. Which of course is exactly the same. 🙄
