About peerages, Charlotte Owen

https://twitter.com/MartinRemains/status/1667963696067354624?s=20
She will be Lady Owen. She has not yet distinguished herself in any public service in any way whatsoever. She may yet do so but she should not be entering the House of Lords now. Something is wrong. Surely, this needs to be investigated.

At least Boris knows what a woman is.

Can see your thought process for today. Can't remember re Murrell and Beattie ?

Beattie - Third week April 2023 - Sunak investigated over a potential breach of transparency rules relating to his links to a childcare firm in which his wife is an investor. Food prices soaring by up to 80%

Murrell - First week April 2023 - Soaring energy prices. Details of sewage dumping in waterways leading to calls for Therese Coffey to resign.

But yes agree with @jgw1 - hard to prove a coincidence due to frequency of Tory party news requiring burial.

Johnson and his allies must dial down the rhetoric. It is appalling that Committee members are being threatened for doing as Parliament instructed them.

While Johnson cannot be sanctioned with a suspension now he has resigned, the committee could recommend that he be refused a pass offered to ex-MPs allowing privileged access to parliament

They should do this. Imagine how pushed off he’d be.

Piggywaspushed · 12/06/2023 07:25

LibDems spotted yesterday in Nad's constituency. Caused great excitement as that was more than they had ever seen her.

Paul Brand tweeting that the Privileges report might be published as early as tomorrow. Also that Johnson's statement hasn't done him any favours.

I guess the dignified exit has long passed him by. If you're going to burn your boats, might as well throw petrol on them while you're at it.

Exclusive:

Boris Johnson, Nadine Dorries and Nigel Adams have yet to formally resign

Resigning MPs have to apply to Treasury to become Steward of the Chiltern Hundreds or Bailiff of the Manor of Northstead

Means writ for the three by-elections won't be moved today

It also raises the question of whether Boris Johnson will still technically be an MP when the Privileges Committee delivers its verdict, which is expected tomorrow

Notonthestairs · 12/06/2023 10:39

DAG tweeting only 2 MPs can resign at any one time as there are only two offices available.
But if more do resign the resignations can be staggered.
And resignations can be refused by the Chancellor by refusing to sign the letters of appointment.

I appreciate that this isn't an annual event but really we need to update these rules to allow for the drama llamas in the HoC.

I guess the later the writ maybe the greater problems for Sunak - fitting in the by-elections before summer recess will be quite tight as it is.

If they haven't formally resigned can they still speak in HoC?

I caught a little bit of the PM this morning talking about AI. He seems very keen on it all, but I just see it as a way of replacing actual people.
I don't know if he was asked about the resignations or if he'll address any of that.

I dunno, I find the prospect of one of them being unable to throw their toys out of the pram for procedural reasons pretty funny.

Notonthestairs · 12/06/2023 10:51

Given their behaviour I don't think they should be free to address the House of Commons. Particularly if they have been already turned down for a appointment to the House of Lords. Their time is done.
And I am pissed off that in a time of continuing crisis in our public sevices, CoL etc we should any more time or money on them.
The long term issue with the Conservatives is that we've wasted years on their internal wrangling rather than focusing on the needs of the UK and NI.

OP posts:
Notonthestairs · 12/06/2023 10:52

Either they are too stupid to understand how to resign or they want to absorb more flipping time.

Suddenly very keen to release his WhatsApps and notebooks. Funny that.

"Exclusive:

Boris Johnson says that the Cabinet Office is blocking him from sharing hundreds of pages of unredacted WhatsApp messages with Covid Inquiry

He accuses it of ‘foot-dragging’ and wasting public time and money"

Hilarious to read he's worried about them wasting money given what has gone on under his leadership.

Rishi Sunak - "When it comes to honours & Boris Johnson.... he asked me to do something I wasn't prepared to do, because I didn't think it was right... & if people don't like that, then tough"

the80sweregreat · 12/06/2023 11:03

It would be Lyndsay Hoyle's decision and he is honestly chocolate teapot, he comes across as very weak to me.

Surely he can't have been lying in his statement?

DuncinToffee · 12/06/2023 12:33

Is Sunak lying now as well?

NEW: Rishi Sunak’s spokesman says it’s “entirely untrue” that anybody from No 10 attempted to “remove, change or alter” Boris Johnson’s resignation honours list.

He says PM was not involved in decision making process around predecessor’s peerages.

If not, why not? I thought that was his job as PM? I imagine he was frightened of what BJ made say or do so went with it. Weak weak weak
BJ's hairdresser got a gong FFS.
It demeans everything about it.

His wife is a shareholder in one of the biggest UK AI businesses. I'm not surprised he's keen on it all.
