They don't even try anymore jgw1

At least our two old friends have returned from their break, like the proverbial penny.

Surprise, surprise the Tories are lying that Gordon Brown had a resignation honours list.

#bbclaurak - "Gordon Brown actually had a dissolution honours list, which gave rewards to members of all political parties."

pointythings · 11/06/2023 11:38

@DuncinToffee the word 'arguably' is doing an awful lot of heavy lifting in that sentence.

Meanwhile I've posted this on the Boris thread but I thought you lot would probably enjoy it too:

That's a brilliant video.

New polling by @LordAshcroft for Mail on Sunday shows "climate change/environment" level with "economy/jobs" and above "immigration" as among the "most important issues facing the country"

Nicola Sturgeon has been arrested.

DuncinToffee · 11/06/2023 15:01

At least that case is being investigated by the police rather than an government committee

And if found guilty, she should face the consequences.

itsgettingweird · 11/06/2023 15:03

Well that's a turn up for the books.

Will be interesting to see if she's charged after all her whiter than white comments about Johnson's lying.

DuncinToffee · 11/06/2023 15:06

I haven't paid much attention to this case, can anyone summarise it?

tobee · 11/06/2023 15:42

I've been lurking on scotsnet and the "SNP shenanigans" continuing threads are good.

I think there's loads of stuff that barely gets reported on south of the border.

itsgettingweird · 11/06/2023 15:42

It's to do with how donated money was used. Don't know much more detail than that.

But I'm glad governments are finally being held to account for their actions and investigated - the outcome will depend on wrong doing or not.

borntobequiet · 11/06/2023 15:58

It seems to be generally accepted that the British Conservative Party is one of the most successful, if not the most successful, in the world. Until Boris Johnson got his hands on it, that is.

Now it may be done for.

BunnyBettChetwynnd · 11/06/2023 16:23

Successful at getting into and holding power. Not necessarily successful at making the country a more rounded and better place to be for the majority of people.

borntobequiet · 11/06/2023 16:32

Well, that’s true. But the point of a political party is to be in power. Good intentions are the cherry on top.

BunnyBettChetwynnd · 11/06/2023 16:47

Flipping 'eck. I'd rather have a cake of policies designed to improve the lives of the nation than a cherry of good intentions.

Is this really all we require from our leaders?

I will hear many things against Boris Johnson, but the roots of the Tory malaise were there long before he turned up. They've been good at getting power still, sure, but they can't stop turning on each other and self sabotaging when they have it. The last time they were in government themselves and able to cohere round a leader for any sustained period was the late 80s. The leaders since then have all ended up hostage to the batshit wing sooner or later.

Johnson has obviously been balls deep in the instability since 2015, but the party were just the same in the 90s.

BunnyBettChetwynnd · 11/06/2023 18:21

Is it just me or is it a coincidence that every time the Tory party have some bad news to hide someone from Nicola Sturgeon's family gets arrested and then released without charge?

I didn’t say it was a good thing. But it’s how it works. If you don’t have power, you don’t have anything. So the important thing for political parties is power.

DuncinToffee · 11/06/2023 18:59

Police release Nicola Sturgeon without charge

Can see your thought process for today. Can't remember re Murrell and Beattie ?

Released without charge.

Released without charge.

To be fair, how many days in the last year has the Tory party not had bad news to try and bury? Can't be many, so perhaps not that much of a coincidence.
