Russia has always played the long game which is why re education of children begins at the same time as removal of troublesome civil servants.

yes, the current indoctrination of tiny children is just disgusting.

Hitler Youth, anyone? It's the same deal, just uniforms with fewer pockets. Someone I knew (who was in the Hitler Youth without the option and thanked God for the war having ended when it did) once told me that the only good thing about the organisation was the number of pockets the uniforms had, including a secret one in one cuff.

Of course they want Crimea. It's part of their country. Would you be happy if Russia annexed Anglesey?

CataluΓ±a is entirely different, it's not about a foreign state annexing a territory but rather about self determination.

I think you’re flossing over a lot of history here.

Glossing even. I thought I could edit the post, sorry.

There is a lot of history and it's very difficult.

The fairest of all would be if the Crimean Tatars were invited back. It was their land before Russia started deporting them.

The fact remains that Russia invaded illegally in 2014 and those Russians who moved there since have no right to be there.

Zelenskyi has released a statement that the date for the "movement of troops" has been set.

https://twitter.com/WarFrontline/status/1663264396477382663

If true, it will likely be within a week, as the weather is crucial in operational timing. The 100 Leopard 1 MBTs were also reportedly set to be in position by the end of May.

Godspeed. Slava Ukraini.

MissConduct, why would Zelensky give such advance warning? I thought he'd want to keep it under wraps for the surprise element.

MissConductUS · 29/05/2023 21:47

Just to clarify, I was referring to the 100 older Leopard 1s Denmark has supplied, not the Leopard 2s various other countries have supplied. The Leopard 1s will likely be in the second echelon, which will consolidate control over areas taken by the first and protect the flanks.

Maybe to have the Russians reacting to shadows, make them jumpy, unsettled and nervous

He's not giving an exact date, and the location(s) will be the real surprise.

Russian propagandists have been signaling this for weeks and that people shouldn't be surprised by Ukrainian gains. Even Prigozhin said he expects them to take back a lot of territory.

ReleaseTheDucksOfWar · 29/05/2023 21:57

Godspeed, Ukraine lights a candle

MissConductUS · 29/05/2023 22:00

Additionally, there isn't anything the Russians can do in the short run that they haven't already done without knowing exactly where the attacks will take place.

And maybe encourage Russian soldiers to mutiny and surrender?

I didn't think of that but you are right I believe a lot have surrendered over the last little while

I agree with you. I always thought Crimean tatars should decide what is right for them. Hopefully they will get this chance once Ukraine wins the war.

@MissConductUS I find this very disturbing having fostered a lad who entered the UK illegally after his family fell foul of ethnic tensions following the last Kosovan conflict. He is ethnically Albanian but with both Serbian and Romany grandparents and distrusted by all sides.

There is a brand of nationalism that is deeply toxic and it is very strong in Serbia.

MissConductUS · 30/05/2023 00:13

Surplus, it is a deeply troubled situation, no doubt about it. American troops serve in Kosovo, too and I've heard the stories.

On the good news side, The UAF has used Storm Shadow missiles to attack a Russian barracks new Mariupol, leading to hundreds of Russian casualties.

https://twitter.com/KyivIndependent/status/1663220572145303559

This has operational significance for several reasons. It shows that Russia has not adapted to the fact that Ukraine has this capability and that Russian air defenses haven't developed a reliable counter for SS (like electronic warfare measures, for example). It will also have a very negative effect on Russian morale.

That's a hopeful thought. Hopefully at least some will.

TheABC · 30/05/2023 08:09

What does everyone think about the recent Moscow drone strikes? A false flag op, so the authorities soften up the populace for full mobilization?

I am sure Russia can replace it's manpower; what's puzzling me is where they will get the equipment from.

Surplus2requirements · 30/05/2023 08:21

@TheABC there's no way of knowing, there's no point in paying any heed to Russian news releases.

Could be false flag, Russian partisans or Ukraine.

Hearing them described as terrorist attacks causes me a very bitter smile.

Iran?

Agree with just not knowing about the drones.

They aren't terrorist attacks, they're a special military operation by Russian patriots!

At this point, that truth would not surprise me. It's a mad, mad world.
