me too @blueshoes

it gets even worse:

The mayor of Nova Kakhovka, Volodymyr Kovalenko, said in a commentary that the city was flooding as a result of the occupiers' undermining of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power plant dam.
The mayor has information as of 6:30 am. According to him, at that time, the zoo "Fairy Tale Grove" and the summer theater were already flooded, water came up to the monument to Shevchenko, cafes and a playground in the city were flooded. A boat station and a yacht club were also flooded, and water came up to Dniprovsky Avenue.
According to Kovalenko, it is currently difficult to get information from the city because there are interruptions in the Internet. He believes that it was the Russians who started jamming the signal to keep people in an information vacuum.

The pure and unadulterated evil of jamming signals so that people don't know they are in danger. The sheer, mass, deliberate evil of it.

What is this going to mean for future grain production? Oh God

Really worrying to think about, the impact of this is going to go on for so long. Fucking Russians.

MissConductUS · 06/06/2023 12:56

I think the Russians did it to widen the river, making it harder for the Ukrainians to cross it to retake Russian held territory.

Mb76 · 06/06/2023 12:59

I agree they are getting increasingly desperate and evil. If they can’t have it no one else can. These are crimes against humanity, not just Ukraine and it’s people

If it was done for a strategic purpose, which you never know with the Russians, I suspect you’re right. It’s pure unadulterated evil but will make any counteroffensive in the area significantly more difficult.

BringBackCoffeeCreams · 06/06/2023 13:08

DH says he been inundated with questions from the media today. People are very worried about the impact destroying the dam will have on the nuclear plant.

If you are worried, don't be. The plant is upstream from the dam so in no immediate danger. The pond levels (used for cooling) haven't changed and are being closely monitored. The plant is already in almost complete shutdown, if levels drop they'll shut it down completely.

Presumably after some days the river level below the dam will return to something like a normal height, and above the dam the level will be lower, so in a week or a month's time will it actually be any harder to cross, presuming the equipment needed hasn't been damaged by the flood?

ReleaseTheDucksOfWar · 06/06/2023 13:16

it'll take weeks for the water to subside and mud to dry out - the earth isn't meant to take in that that much excess all at once.

@BringBackCoffeeCreams

Many thanks.

I'm not a contributor, but I have followed from the 1st thread for information. I hope that's ok.

Surplus2requirements · 06/06/2023 20:07

This frm Sky

The Russian government published a decree banning authorities from investigating accidents at hydrotechnical structures on 30 May - one week before the dam breach.
It specifies probes may not be conducted into "accidents" resulting from "military actions, sabotage and terrorist acts" until 2028.
The document related to the Kherson, Zaporizhzhia, Luhansk and Donetsk regions.
A translation of the document states: "Until 1 January, 2028, the technical investigation of accidents at dangerous production facilities and accidents of hydrotechnical structures, which occurred as a result of military actions, sabotage and terrorist acts, will not be conducted."

The more the merrier strawberries. These are great threads - a great source of information and avoiding the more hysterical media coverage.
