The lovely bit of your house

So, in my head I have a house straight out of a swanky interiors magazine, but in reality with 2 teenage boys, a full time job and a life, it's a very long way from that.
However, one little corner of the bathroom always gives me joy.
I thought it would be nice to post a picture of the tiny little bit of your house that gives you hope, even if like mine the rest of it is full of discarded trainers, laundry waiting to be put away and last night's left over pizza.

Oooh, I can tell already this will be a nice thread! Here’s mine :

in the teardrop mirror you can just about see the corner of the skylight above which is why it is so light in this room. I just love it 😍

@ChloeR81 @mamaduckbone thanks. The chair is 1980s Ercol and cost £20 on Facebook and then I dyed the peach floral upholstery with emulsion paint which I colour matched to my sofa, and then waxed it. (I actually had a thread on here asking advice on how to do it!) The g-plan unit behind cost £10 from a charity shop 😱

I love this roof light in a room we've just had built. It's the most amazing space on a sunny or rainy day

That photo does it no justice at all!

ChloeR81 · 13/05/2023 11:03

Wow, £20!!!! You did an amazing job. I’m off to search Facebook and eBay for one 😂

There is one interior wall facing west which catches the setting sun over two weeks of September. The light casts shadows from the roses and rosehips outside and the branches of a beech tree and as the sun moves these shadow climb and fall. Overlaid with this is the shadow of a low chandelier which captures the light and spins it off in to colour up the shadows and bring them to life. It only happens at this time of year when the sun is about 10-15 degrees above the horizon. Each evening lasts just 25 minutes and then it is gone. Up the wall climbs the roselight and then it fades. Just silence. For 50 weeks of the year this bare wall is sleeping.

AssertiveGertrude · 13/05/2023 11:30

Ooh my favourite type of thread - will post (big Instagram fan for this type of thing)

wonderingwinnie · 13/05/2023 11:36

No - we paid someone to do it :)

Bathroomlove · 13/05/2023 11:39

My bathroom, especially the sky

YellowHatt · 13/05/2023 11:40

What a lovely thread!

Bathroomlove · 13/05/2023 11:47

Not my phone that's for sure!!

i love my bathroom, especially the skylight & the tiles. It has a lovely light in there, especially when it's sunny.

I had a picture in my mind if the tiles I wanted, but I couldn't find them anywhere. Despite the MN hate, I wanted grey tiles, but Matt & not griege. Large tiles. After months of looking I was just about to admit defeat, when I found them! Perfect!

i had a skylight put in to the previously windowless bathroom.

Almost 10 years on it still makes me smile, & still looks as fresh as when it was first done.

I can't take any photos as I'm not home at the moment. I'll try to remember to do it later.

< even though everyone will probably wonder what all the fuss is about 🤣🤣>

The late afternoon sunlight in the bedrooms is absolutely beautiful too, but never shows well in photos, so you'll just have to believe me 🤣

I escaped an abusive relationship last year and when I moved into my rented house I had nothing, now I've got a few bits and pieces from IKEA, including this bed, but everything else I have including this bedding, the table lamps, side tables and cushions were second hand and donated by my lovely sister and niece, this might just look like an ordinary bed to you but I love the colours and the look and it's become my special 'haven' safe from the anguish I felt for so long.

I love my landing but even that has been taken over at the moment 😩 need to find a couple of hours to get it looking how I like it again. I'm posting to remind me to do it l.

Thanks for starting such an uplifting thread @mamaduckbone - it's inspiring to see everyone's lovely spaces!

So much of our house is still a building site - partly because it was a repossession needing everything done when we bought it five years ago, but also because we're DIYing virtually all of it.

There are a few finished (ish) bits that I think are lovely. I'm going to post after and before pics of those that make me happy (and proud).

Firstly, the courtyard which was one of the first areas we tackled in spring 2018. The garden is 0.5 acre and was an overgrown wilderness so the little walled courtyard was a slightly less daunting place to start, plus we wanted an oasis to escape from the building work as well as somewhere to grow veg. It was completely bare with half finished decking but is now a lovely part of the garden to spend time...

On the other side of the building was a hideous extension, built by a PO in c1999. The roof was a mix of patchwork polycarbonate and tarps.

Last year we finally got round to transforming it. First pic is from when we viewed the house. Second is today...all our own work which makes me so proud of my talented DH!

And inside. The extension was as shoddy/crap inside as out - they'd actually plasterboarded under the leaky polycarbonate so it was falling down in damp clumps!

Five years on and I absolutely love having a super space to sit with a lovely view (or will be once all the building materials etc are gone).

First pic is the ceiling on viewing day.

@thenewaveragebear1983 i remember that thread! Your chair looks amazing. Well done! I’m not at home at the mo but I have two favourite places: my first is the corner of a sofa in our kitchen diner. It’s up against a built in white painted cabinet so somewhere to put your tea and book plus several plants and candles. I can see through the French doors into the garden. It’s really peaceful.

The other place is weirdly the shower in our bathroom in the attic. I’m short but the way our (amazing) builder positioned the velux window means I can just see the tops of the trees in the woods. We live in proper surburbia so I can pretend I live in a forest 😆
