The lovely bit of your house

So, in my head I have a house straight out of a swanky interiors magazine, but in reality with 2 teenage boys, a full time job and a life, it's a very long way from that.
However, one little corner of the bathroom always gives me joy.
I thought it would be nice to post a picture of the tiny little bit of your house that gives you hope, even if like mine the rest of it is full of discarded trainers, laundry waiting to be put away and last night's left over pizza.

Massively outing to anyone who knows me in real life 🤣 My kitchen floor - I love it. We got it printed from a retro pic I found online

This is beautiful!

God, I love this. What's the material?

The patterned bit us vinyl - inlaid into (I think) Karndean type stuff

Jericha · 13/05/2023 15:39

A little bit of my dining room, filled with all my books and lots of colour and illustrations of places we've been as the rest of the house is very neutral other than the gothic downstairs loo!).

The bookcase in my office. The rest of the house is still a bit bland for my taste as we haven’t fully settled in, but I really do love my office.

No particular place in my house. I love it all.

I do love the back lawn at the side of my garage though... to the right of the house.. We have 4 lawns - one directly behind the house, one in front of the house, one to the right of the house (at the front IYSWIM) and one to the right of the house at the back (at the side of our garage.)

It's behind a 5 ft high 25 foot wide hedge. Very private and cosy and hidden from everyone. Half shaded by the garage, and half in the sun.. So you can choose to get a tan OR stay in the shade. I spend many hours there during the Spring and Summer, and no-one can see me, from anywhere.

What a lovely thread with lovely pictures. You all have great taste. @thenewaveragebear1983 that space is gorgeous.

Unfortunately, due to adopting an 8 month old rescue dog last year, who had been abused and now has separation anxiety, my house looks like an abandoned institution 🤣.

All the furniture has been chewed, but I wouldn't have it any other way. I'll just have to wait a while before anything is replaced/put back out on display.

SecretsIWouldNeverTell · 13/05/2023 15:45

Would rather not post a photograph sorry...

@ChloeR81 @mamaduckbone thanks. The chair is 1980s Ercol and cost £20 on Facebook and then I dyed the peach floral upholstery with emulsion paint which I colour matched to my sofa, and then waxed it. (I actually had a thread on here asking advice on how to do it!) The g-plan unit behind cost £10 from a charity shop 😱

I remember reading that thread and thinking you were nuts, then seeing the results and totally changing my mind. Great result, and it looks amazing in this picture.

Hopinonadream · 13/05/2023 15:53

Loving this thread. Really enjoying all the photos, and all the decor in differing styles. The coziness and enjoyment shines out of all the pics.

shouldntbeonhereagain · 13/05/2023 15:59

Great thread. Our house is always chaotic and loud. 4 kids, 2 dogs, 2 cats and shed loads of DIY constantly on the go. This view is from my favourite chair in the kitchen. If I ever wrestle the seat from the dogs - its my happy place!

One of many places that cheer me at home (but one of the few that isn't covered by tiny bits of snipped-up paper today from 3YO) is this corner of my landing where I can sit and read with a glass of wine.

We have a weird, snaky landing that runs into dead ends, so I decided to claim this bit for me and my paintings.

A lot of my house is a total mess but we did paint the walls in our living room green, bought a load of fake plants so we couldn't kill them and it's a nice room now :)

These are plates which used to hang on the wall in my grandmother's house when I was a child. She died 17 years ago but the house was only sold last year when my grandad moved to a home, so I asked for these plates as I had always liked them and thought I might get some when I was grown up.

Not the best photo but will have to do!

I’m not home so can’t share todays - but my fave corner is where the dining table is! I love a good tablecloth and a few candles! Photo is from Easter so ignore the bunny garland!

@thenewaveragebear1983 Can I ask where you got your chair? It's lovely!

MsRosley · 13/05/2023 16:43

@thenewaveragebear1983 Oh sorry, just seen you already answered this. Nice work!

I love our house's front porch, particularly when the magnolia tree is in bloom. I quite often sit there in the morning, drinking a cup of tea, and watching the world go by.
Before we moved here, I would walk past this house, see someone sitting on the porch, reading a book, and wish that I lived there. And now we do. The photograph appeared on our city's tourism page as the tree is spectacular. I often wonder who planted it and when.

I love this corner of the sitting room. It feels really calming and grown-up (even though the plants are in crappy plastic pots still!) It's full of things that remind me of family, or that I picked up at antiques fairs. And the chair is super-comfy.

It's totally unrecognisable from the ugly, cold room it was when we moved in.

Plus the view of the trees is lovely, particularly at this time of year.

My daughters bedroom makes me very happy too. Luckily she is onboard for my love of colour and pattern!

There is one interior wall facing west which catches the setting sun over two weeks of September. The light casts shadows from the roses and rosehips outside and the branches of a beech tree and as the sun moves these shadow climb and fall. Overlaid with this is the shadow of a low chandelier which captures the light and spins it off in to colour up the shadows and bring them to life. It only happens at this time of year when the sun is about 10-15 degrees above the horizon. Each evening lasts just 25 minutes and then it is gone. Up the wall climbs the roselight and then it fades. Just silence. For 50 weeks of the year this bare wall is sleeping.

I love the way you have written this. It's like the opening words of a holiday novel or even a crime thriller.

weegiemum · 13/05/2023 17:03

My kitchen!

4 years ago we extended our tiny galley kitchen into the garage and now have a lovely big kitchen/diner with an island and huge dining table.

I sit in there most of the day when I'm at home, it's so bright and lovely.

I'd send a pic but I'm afraid it's full of laundry today!

Pieceofpurplesky · 13/05/2023 17:06

My garden. It's a sun trap and my haven. Also not overlooked. We are right on the edge of the countryside too.
