Local election results

Is anyone following the local election results?

It's not looking good for the Tories is it?

I have a question if anyone can answer it for me - NW Leicestershire has been declared "hung" due to no majority. However, Labour have 18 seats and the Conservatives 12. How is that not considered a majority?

Has it? I'm sure I've read on BBC News that Labour has won it.

Igotjelly · 05/05/2023 08:00

I think it’s because there are 38 seats and so 19 are needed to be an overall majority. Labour took 17.

There seems to be no online news coverage in my area apart from bbc local news

It's all over LBC. Ferrari is talking about it, interviewed Ed Davey earlier. Windsor & Maidenhead has gone LD which is a huge win for them.

Ha!

Depressing news to wake up to. Everyone believes Labour can wave some magic wand and everything will go back to normal! I think things will actually get worse under a Labour government if that’s what happens in the next GE…

Yes, because the Tories have done such a fab job in the last few years...

Kendodd · 05/05/2023 08:41

I think the ongoing problem the other three parties have is that if you lean right, you vote Tory, if you lean left you could vote Labour, LibDems or Greens. This splits the left wing vote and in our winner takes all system gives the Tories a huge advantage. Also, UKIP style parties don't collect much because they have taken over the Tories so the Tories collect all their votes as well now.

DeflatedAgain · 05/05/2023 08:41

Conservatives have done a terrible job the past few years.

I changed my vote to labour this time. I'm optimistic but in all honesty I feel we're in such a mess no party can truly fix it.

UndercoverCop · 05/05/2023 08:45

Where I live is a Tory stronghold, under those prediction maps for proportional representation of still shows as likely to be Tory. The Tories lost our local council, it is now hung with very close to a majority for Labour I'm pleasantly flabbergasted.
However labour need to actually capitalise on this, not everyone votes the same way in local and general elections. I'm not convinced Kier starmer is the person to do this.

Ostryga · 05/05/2023 08:46

Yes glad to see Labour doing well finally. But not sure KS is the right one to hang onto the lead for another 18 months.

Although at rate the Tories are going we’ll have another 50 scandals between now and the GE.

A mess of Tory making.
I believe we are now the poorest country in northern Europe thanks to the Tories.
Our poorest 20% are poorer than the poorest 20% (is it nine?) countries in eastern Europe and their middle class are projected to be richer than ours by the end of the decade if trends continue.
So, if you vote Tory because you think they're good for the economy you are deluded.

That's crazy! Thanks for the info.

I'm not well informed with politics, it's definitely not my forte. I try to keep up with it all but get a bit lost.

I didn't vote conservative previously but it felt right voting labour this time around.

Fingers crossed things ease up 🤞

A lot of the decline is due to Brexit as well as the Tories.

Don't kid yourself that the W&M result reflects on the national mood.
The local Con councillors were an absolute shower, have trashed Maidenhead, and were ousted for local reasons.

Those brexit chooks are coming home to roost now for sure. Its crazy that KS doesn't feel able to say Brexit was/is terrible for the UK for fear of being torn apart by the MSM.

newnamethanks · 05/05/2023 09:11

@Rainyday35 this is no time to be making fatuous jokes. Anything is better than the squalid shower of chancers and con men that have worn the disguise of the Tory Party for the last few years. Few things could be worse than Jonathan Gullis. And you want more of it?

I'm not kidding myself thanks. I have no respect for the UK electorate and it wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if the tories win the GE next year. However, it is a big win for the LD's however you cut it.

redspottedmug · 05/05/2023 09:16

A big win locally yes. Nationally, not really.

Shade17 · 05/05/2023 09:18

Be careful what you wish for, our city council has been Labour controlled for as long as I can remember and they’re the biggest shower of shit imaginable. They’ve run the city centre into the ground whilst wasting tens of millions on a project that will never recoup the outlay. Absolute jokers who couldn’t even run a village fete.

Obviously. They're called local elections for a reason. 🙄

I’m willing to risk it at this point having been a Tory voter until the last few elections.
