Local election results

Is anyone following the local election results?

It's not looking good for the Tories is it?

I have a question if anyone can answer it for me - NW Leicestershire has been declared "hung" due to no majority. However, Labour have 18 seats and the Conservatives 12. How is that not considered a majority?

I understand that stopthetories website had half a million hits last week.

I heard that too. Tactical voting will probably be the norm in the next GE which I very much doubt is anywhere near 18 months away.

Why would the conservatives call an election sooner than December 2024? In what circumstances would they do that?

By leaving it to December 2024 they are admitting what we all know, that they are toast.

pointythings · 07/05/2023 19:06

There's also a tactical consideration - if energy prices are still high then December isn't a good look for the Tories because they will be held responsible.

So they will bring it forward then? So they get toasted sooner?

They will leave it to the last minute. The poison in the chalice will be more concentrated.

Chatillon · 07/05/2023 19:11

We are heading to a recession about two years into a Labour / Lib Dem term. That is when asset prices will collapse and the G7 will be under pressure. This is the chalice that will be picked up.

Aren't we in a recesion already in all but name?

Nope. We do not have mass unemployment. Inflation is not being licked. Just wait. Whoever succeeds needs to be given 10 years to sort it out. Not five.

10 years is optimistic. It has taken the Tories 13 years to create this mess.

I have only skim read this thread so I am not sure if this has been mentioned. It was said that introducing photo ID in order to vote would disenfranchise many people. It was thought likely to affect groups most who didn't traditionally vote Tory. Given the scale of the carnage in the Tory council ranks after Thursday's election - did the Tories shoot themselves in the foot over this requirement? There must have been more people turned away on Thursday than have been convicted of 'personation' in at least the last ten years. Will Tory HQ be counting how many would be Tory voters got turned away? Will they quietly scrap this requirement? Not that this would account for the scale of the losses!

IClaudine · 08/05/2023 08:19

That is an interesting question @Peregrina I think a lot of Tories would really resent having to show photo ID and maybe decided not to bother. However I do think they would in a GE.

LadyWithLapdog · 08/05/2023 08:42

The Tories will vote in the GE. A bit of protest voting now but sheepishly towing the line come the GE.

LlynTegid · 08/05/2023 09:26

The election in December 2024 will be timed to be the week students are most likely to be travelling between uni and home, so that as many as possible forget or find it difficult to vote.

I can’t believe people think we’ll have another winter election. Or that this apology for a government will manage to struggle on for another 18 months.

Those that do are utterly admitting that the government will not get re-elected. There can be no other explanation.

Good point.

Crikeyalmighty · 08/05/2023 10:11

@LlynTegid it was the same with the referendum too

celticnations · 02/05/2025 18:44

Really great to see the Cons hit.

Up here, Reform will split the unionist vote which as an SNP/SNP voter pleases me!

Sad to see yet another lurch to the right in England coming after the Brexit disaster.
