Local election results

Is anyone following the local election results?

It's not looking good for the Tories is it?

I have a question if anyone can answer it for me - NW Leicestershire has been declared "hung" due to no majority. However, Labour have 18 seats and the Conservatives 12. How is that not considered a majority?

Be careful what you wish for, our city council has been Labour controlled for as long as I can remember and they’re the biggest shower of shit imaginable. They’ve run the city centre into the ground whilst wasting tens of millions on a project that will never recoup the outlay. Absolute jokers who couldn’t even run a village fete.

You have just described my town when it was still under Tory control !

Depressing news to wake up to. Everyone believes Labour can wave some magic wand and everything will go back to normal! I think things will actually get worse under a Labour government if that’s what happens in the next GE…

Sure. We've never had a more corrupt yet massively incompetent government but giving them another 5 years to see what else they can destroy is definitely the best option.

kirinm · 05/05/2023 09:31

@Kendodd and the tories are responsible for Brexit. David Cameron and then the 'no deal brexit' morons that followed thereafter.

It would be interesting to know the age if posters.

I think the ones behind labour are mostly young people who weren't adults last time Labour were in. Or were but too young/not interested enough to see the damage they did.

KS, is a complete waste of space. At the very least the need a more credible Leader.

Are you kidding? A dead haddock could do a better job of running the country than these reckless sociopaths!

I’ve never come across anyone who thinks that. IRL or the media. I think there’s a wide acceptance of the fact that ‘normal’ on a societal level fluxes( I would be interested in your definition of normal tbh).

The only way I could find to accept your statement is if we’re talking about ‘normal’ standards of integrity and conduct that we should be able to expect from our politicians, then I would disagree that Labour sink anywhere near what we’ve experienced over the last decade.

The tories have drained themselves of any competence or talent. Voting to keep them in for more of the same would be madness.

rattymol · 05/05/2023 09:49

@MaisieMay23 I am older and so remember how much better it was under labour.

You can keep telling yourself that if you like. But the country was much better off under the last labour government and the Tories have trashed it.

Underthemagnificentbeechtree · 05/05/2023 09:53

@MaisieMay23 what damage did Labour do? I’m 40 and my future seemed so bright under Labour. Yes the way was a mistake, but the Blair/Brown led government did so much to reduce equality and establish a series of safety nets for the most vulnerable in our society. Sadly many of these have been dismantled under coalition then Tory governments.

Lonelycrab · 05/05/2023 09:53

Is that the time when we had a functioning NHS with low waiting list times? When you could actually see a Gp or dentist?
The time when we had a functioning rail network?
The time when our economy wasn’t completely screwed?
The time when there was far less governmental corruption?
The time when we had a functioning asylum system?
The time when our national debt was a fraction of what it is now?
The time when our government wasn’t pandering to racists with dog whistle gutter politics?
The time when there was some sense of national unity?

Yes I remember those times. I’m 51 this year.

I’m old enough to have been an adult when the tories last lost government and frankly I don’t remember a time the country was in such a comprehensive mess on every single available matrix of measurement.

I’m not wedded to any particular party and my vote shifts dependent on candidate, level of office etc and the tories need to a hiatus to regroup and work out what the f they actually are. They also need time to raise new talent. They’re simply not in a position to provide the kind of stability and diplomacy we need to navigate the next decade.

FFS!
*The war was a mistake
**they did so much to reduce INequality

stbrandonsboat · 05/05/2023 09:55

I'm 53 and have never known the country to be as bad as it is now. I'm utterly sickened by how far the tories have dragged us down, allowed the Brexit disaster and ruined public services.

redspottedmug · 05/05/2023 09:56

I like the idea of the Dead Haddock Party.

Gauging the mood in the two previously Tory boroughs that I am most familiar with, the traditional Tory voters have definitely had enough and are motivated to make their vote count. So W&M was a total wipeout, and I'm curious to see how the other council fares when the count is completed today.

Narco · 05/05/2023 09:57

I am 53, EX Tory voter

I am disgusted by the corruption in this latest Gov, I darent even think of Covid and the shit response to it, the wasted money, corruption (Twat Hancock) late lockdowns that cost lives, partygate, etc

I cannot get a doc appointment for love nor money, I am so worried about it all

I will never vote Cons again

stbrandonsboat · 05/05/2023 09:59

This lot aren't even conservatives. What are they conserving exactly? Nothing. They're destroying and dismantling to strip as much money as possible before the ship sinks. This isn't conservatism.

Narco · 05/05/2023 09:59

oh and dare I mention Liz Truss who trashed the economy in 2 fucking weeks😡

I agree, I suppose we should be “typical Tory voters”. In fact a few years ago a Labour candidate knocked on my door and told me he assumed I would vote Conservative (no idea why). I voted Conservative up until Cameron but the Conservative Party that exists now doesn’t resemble the one I used to support and until it changes radical I will never vote for them again

HistoryFanatic · 05/05/2023 10:01

I agree.

They both hold the electorate in contempt, hate women and are just out to feather their own nests.

redspottedmug · 05/05/2023 10:04

Sadly many politicians are only in it for their ego.

There are of course many many people who work for the greater good but the current crop are not they.

This collection of nutters bears little resemblance to the Conservative Party that they have trashed. As evidence, they will soon be blaming Sunak for today and seeking another right wing xenophobic1 swivel eyed loon to 'lead' them. Braverman? Badenoch? Gullis? 30pLee? Moggy? What a shower. And it's still someone else's fault, Starmer, Corbyn, Harold bloody Wilson? Blind to everything outside their incestuous Westminster world.
