Worst plot hole in Friends

I was home sick today, and having nothing to do this popped into my head and I can't get it out until I share it! The One With Chandler in a Box, where Monica injures her eye and has to go to the eye doctor. She and Rachel are gushing over how cute the on-call doctor is, only to find out that it is Richard's son. Really?! She honestly had no idea what her ex-boyfriend's son looked like? Granted she hadn't seen him in-person for a while, but Richard really had no photos of his kids in his apartment? That just seems too far fetched to me.

If you think this is is crazy there’s a thread on another site about friends plot holes and mistakes that’s been going for ten years!

Wow! That's kind of scary.

I haven’t rtft but in early season 1 when rachel loses her engagement ring in one of the dozen lasagne’s that monica has catered, phoebe helps them by eating some of the lasagna. Then in later seasons she’s vegetarian!

IrritableVowel · 23/04/2023 08:05

Not a plot hole but yesterday the one where Monica's mum hired her to cater was on TV. Her freezer literally just had lasagne in it. And she was planning to cook it from frozen in time for her guests to eat. It would take ages. And where is the rest of her frozen food?

Phoebe always felt like a weird add-on to me. I read somewhere that there is a close connection between Chandler, Ross, Monica and Rachel but Joey and Phoebe didn’t have the same bond with the four so could easily have been written out if the characters didn’t work.

Ditto, there were no real older adults to offer friendly advice - apart from the Gellers who were mainly there for laughs. The writers were going to have a friendly NY cop who would chat to them at the coffee house, but decided against it.

So we are told all about how Phoebe didn’t finish high school, was homeless living behind a dumpster, even lived in Prague for a time. But she goes from living with Monica to living with her Grandma in a nice apartment, why was she a homeless teenager then?

The storyline with her birth mother was even more bizarre. The woman at the beach house was in a ménage a trois as a teenager with Frank and Lily as they were all weirdos at High School together. She got pregnant by Frank but gave the twins - Phoebe and Ursula - to Frank and Lily to raise. Frank then disappeared leaving Lily to raise two children she was not biologically related to along with some random stepfather who later went to prison.

Plus Phoebe who was all about peace and love - but as a teenager she mugged people on the streets for money. One of which was a teenage Ross - and she actually remembers this due to the comic he was holding at the time. Even though Ross doesn’t remember her.

Oh and at one point, lived with a flatmate called Denise, who was never seen or heard of again. In fact, none of them had any real friends outside of the group.

Not a plot hole as such as they explain it but Jon Lovitz being in season 1 & 9 in friends,
I suddenly realised whilst watching the series 1 episode he was the annoying crying guy from the bad date episode

I was never sure if Phoebe invented Denise to stop Rachel moving in with her or not!

Also isn't it initially said that she and Monica were college roommates? Yet she later says she never went to high school. And at the start I thought Monica hasn't seen Rachel for years, not since they graduated high school but then flashbacks show that they kept in touch even after school.

PlumpkinPete · 23/04/2023 10:36

The one that always annoyed me was, when Richard and Monica broke up he said he would have a baby "if I had to" but she wanted someone who was genuinely excited about being a parent.

When he shows up again and Chandler's insecure they make a big thing of him saying he's decided he would have a baby if that's what it took to win Monica back as if that's a big change that will make a difference. But that's what he said in the first place!

It doesn't add anything to the storyline. The audience knows she's going to end up with Chandler after all the build up and if they wanted to show him being irrationally insecure about Richard, they could have done that anyway!

Phoebe's French speaking ability

In The One with Rachel's Date (Season 8, E5) Phoebe is introduced to Monica's sous-chef Tim & says 'so you are Monica's boss?". He replies actually she's my boss. Sous is french for under. Phoebe say I sous-stand.

In The One Where Joey Speaks French (Season 10, E13), Phoebe is a fluent French speaker with lines like vous pouviez jouer le jeu avec lui.

Given she supposedly lived on the streets, where she learnt French at all is a mystery- but even more mysterious is how in S8 she didn't know the word 'sous' or even the phrase 'sous-chef' which is a known restaurant job in English - but by S10 she was speaking like a native.

SalmonEile · 23/04/2023 11:28

Did they ever really explain why Monica and Rachel went from being such close friends up to late teens then lost touch
I mean it does happen in real life I know, people go off to college, move in different circles , mobile phones and social media weren’t available to keep in touch regularly, Rachel got caught up with her sorority and getting married
but still it feels like something they could’ve addressed
unless they did and I’ve forgotten

She learned French behind bibs with a small group. Mentioned in the same episode as she teaches joey !

I mean I think back then going to different colleges in different cities would have been a good enough reason to lose touch with your high school friend. Realistically it’s hard enough now and back then you couldn’t really just Facebook friend somebody!

Although to me I think they introduced the characters one way and then changed their minds. When Rachel is first introduced I think it comes across like she and Monica were friendly acquaintances who grew up near each other, to the point Monica has to say you remember Ross, as if Rachel might not know him that well. Later in flashbacks it’s implied they were best friends who did everything together like going to prom, holidays, everything. But at first I don’t think it’s presented like that.

ReasonsToBeCheerfull · 23/04/2023 12:13

Learned french behind bins - I'd forgotten that and looked it up.

What she says is in Season 8 (E9) I'm sorry, but I never got to be in a club. I didn't go to high school. But three of us would meet behind a dumpster to learn French.Bonjour

This is also ridiculous on many levels but makes the sous-chef even more inexplicable.

dayswithaY · 23/04/2023 12:43

I mean, it’s pointless to pick it apart now all these years later, but it really annoyed me that Rachel would leave her wedding, find her way into NYC - still in her wedding dress - to track down a long lost school friend who she vaguely remembered would sometimes hang out at a coffee shop in Greenwich Village.

As Monica pointed out, Rachel didn’t even invite her to the wedding so clearly they hadn’t spoken in years!

That's true. Why would Monica have been her first thought? I've never thought about it like that but it is odd. You'd more likely turn to your parents.

dayswithaY · 23/04/2023 13:11

I suppose she was literally running out of her wedding so she had to get away from everyone, but still…

Kvetching · 23/04/2023 17:08

The wedding thing would’ve been much more believable if Rachel had just gone into the coffee house to get out of the rain and Monica had recognised her.

The whole show was based on this years of friendship between them, so the fact Monica was not at her wedding was a massive plot hole.

To be fair her dad was furious with her for running away so I guess she couldn’t go to him

it’s kind of nice her mother showed support for her later on though

She had seen Monica earlier. Before the wedding - it was shown in a later episode she came in with a group of friends and she said she wanted to come back and have lunch with her. It was when the coffee house was still a bar. Chandler was there playing pool too. He dropped a pool ball here her to meet her when she said she wanted to sleep with the next guy she saw.

WhyDoesItAlways · 23/04/2023 23:09

Not exactly a plot hole but I've just seen the episode where Phoebe dates a guy who teaches her basketball and he goes commando under loose but long shorts. I couldn't help but think that in most if not all the positions he was sat in he wouldn't have been on show. I do love it when Gunther tells him to put the mouse back in the house though.

Sometimes when you're in a real bind, you reminisce. Maybe Rachel was thinking about what a good friend Monica used to be when she was young. The other thing was that Rachel was quite different so in some ways it's not surprising they drifted apart and that Monica wasn't invited to the wedding.

ChessieFL · 24/04/2023 07:14

Rachel does say that Monica’s the only person she knows who lives in the city and that’s why she turned to her. Monica then comments that she wasn’t invited to the wedding and Rachel just says ‘I was kinda hoping that wouldn’t be an issue’. So I don’t think that’s a plot hole as it explains why Rachel went to her.

Did you ever read the fan theory where someone came up with the idea that Phoebe was a homeless drug addict who watches the others through the window of Central Perk and the whole series is made up of her daydreams about what her life would be like as part of the group? 😂

dayswithaY · 24/04/2023 18:52

@MadisonAvenue Wow, I love this theory and it makes total sense.
