Worst plot hole in Friends

I was home sick today, and having nothing to do this popped into my head and I can't get it out until I share it! The One With Chandler in a Box, where Monica injures her eye and has to go to the eye doctor. She and Rachel are gushing over how cute the on-call doctor is, only to find out that it is Richard's son. Really?! She honestly had no idea what her ex-boyfriend's son looked like? Granted she hadn't seen him in-person for a while, but Richard really had no photos of his kids in his apartment? That just seems too far fetched to me.

I half expected the final episode to reveal that the whole thing had been a figment of Phoebe's imagination. She'd been busking outside Central Perk and saw the close relationships of the others inside the coffee shop, and wished she was part of it.

So she came up with all these scenarios, where she was part of a close knit group of Friends, but in reality was just a poor girl living alone without family or friends.

SalmonEile · 26/04/2023 01:28

I thought of another one- Phoebe refuses to believe that Rachel kissed a girl in college but Rachel and Monica made out in front of Joey and Chandler to get their apartment back

That whole story line was weak.

It was all just so that they could show Jennifer and Winona having a peck on the lips.

whynotwhatknot · 28/04/2023 16:13

Just watching tow pauls the man althugh not to do with that

monica puts her name down on a waiting list for a wedding venue(museum theyre visiting) where the woman says has a 2 year waiting list

the same day the woman phones and leaves a a message that theres been a cancellation and she can have her wedding there

why the hell would she be firs tont he list when its 2 yars long?

mikado1 · 28/04/2023 16:23

It's a 2 year wait for a free date, as I understood it, but perhaps she's first on the list or was bumped up because of her recent visit, the date not suiting others. Unrealistic of course, but not a plot hole, I'd have said.

I haven’t rtft but in early season 1 when rachel loses her engagement ring in one of the dozen lasagne’s that monica has catered, phoebe helps them by eating some of the lasagna. Then in later seasons she’s vegetarian!

she was probably scraping off meat layers, as Monica advised to aunt Sylvia😂😂

And they never ended up getting married there.

Flittingaboutagain · 28/04/2023 21:15

In the one with the inadvertent kiss, Joey's looking for the hot girl in UNG-turned Ross' apartment building. When he knocks on Ross' door it's like he's at the end of a corridor but when coming back the other way running from the apartment where the child shouted Daddy, there's a whole other corridor of flats.

Even episode to episode they seemed fast and loose with continuity etc.

dayswithaY · 28/04/2023 21:25

The layout of the apartments has always been a mystery. Obviously, it was just a studio set but bore no resemblance to an actual building!

I think someone drew floorplans and put them online once if you can be bothered to look for them.

Whatthetrolley · 28/04/2023 23:56

I was always confused about the floor plan of the hotel when they went to Barbados. The 3 rooms linked but based on windows, doors and interconnecting doors it made no sense!

I always thought this with the Cohen house on The OC. The layout of the house made absolutely no sense and changed weekly - it was like when you have a dream and you open the door to your bathroom and it leads into the garden.

I just think even though it’s just a show, surely you’d make the effort to ensure it seems realistic? Like a floor plan at least.

WHAT HAPPENED TO THE CHICK AND THE DUCK?

WHAT HAPPENED TO THE CHICK AND THE DUCK?

The chick and duck thing annoyed me... imagine the amount of bird shit that would have been in that flat...yet there never was and you never saw them cleaning up

ReasonsToBeCheerfull · 29/04/2023 13:11

chick and duck
in one episode there is a conversation with Phoebe & Joey about the chick and the duck being taken to a farm or something
I forget which one it is
the joke is that they've obviously been taken to be put down and Joey thinks they've gone to play in a field or soemthing.

CorporaINobbyNobbs · 29/04/2023 13:14

And at the end when Joey buys the new chick and duck, Rachel says ‘the chick and the duck?? Didn’t they di—‘ and Phoebe jumps in with ‘dive into fun at the farm’. So I just thought they died of natural causes but they lied to Joey?

CorporaINobbyNobbs · 29/04/2023 13:17

The whole thing about the Chandler and Rachel thing doesn’t bother me because obviously in the pilot they didn’t know they would have those flashbacks in later serieses so they had to kind of ignore the earlier episode to make them work.

the ones that annoy me more are the simple things they just have forgotten like Ross being a medical marvel but then Judy being pregnant when they got married. Or Chandler not liking dogs (when he’s talking to Monica about wanting a marriage not a wedding he says they can get a dog instead of a cat)

LudicrouslyCapaciousBag · 29/04/2023 13:32

CremeEggThief · 18/04/2023 20:26

Well, part of the answer to that one is Monica was left the tenancy of thr apartment by her grandma and it was still under strict rental control that kept the rent low, as far as I can remember, ToughOldTerf.

It’s rent-controlled and she is illegally subletting it from her grandmother. In the flashback episode when she invites Joey in for ‘lemonade’ and nearly sleeps with him she tells him that if the landlord ever asks she’s an 87-year-old woman.

No I think Chandler said about having a cat with a bell on it’s collar and Monica said you meant dog right?

I'd not really thought about this before but this must be Jack Geller's mother?
Judy's mother is the one who dies in The One Where Nana Dies Twice.

So if the grandma was 87 at the start (when she met Joey in the flashback) then she would be 97 at the end of the programme. How come she is never mentioned, never seen and didn't have any birthday parties? Where is grandma?

Or is she actually dead at the start and they are pretending she's alive? But wouldn't Treagar notice?

Good point! She would presumably have been at Monica and Chandler’s wedding.

KillingMeDeftly · 29/04/2023 18:46

She was @LudicrouslyCapaciousBag - Judy tells Monica she wishes her grandmother could've seen her get married and when Monica says "but she's seated right there" she replies "not that old bat, my mother!"

SargentSagittarius · 29/04/2023 19:13

And Monica makes a reference to her when she thanks Rachel for getting her into a taxi after the rehearsal dinner before her wedding.

On the subject of ‘rehearsal’ dinners, it annoyed me that Emily and Ross had one, when they’re not a thing in the UK.

BensonStabler · 29/04/2023 19:35

Monica gives up her ideal wedding dress by for Chandler, so that he can have the band “The Swing Kings”. Yet at their wedding they have the band ‘Jungle Swing’

Monica finds her perfect dress she tries on at the expensive bridal store Kleinman’s, it’s a white A-line halter neck dress & it has a basque bodice, and yet when they go to the sale store in the Bronx, she fights Megan over ‘her dress’ and it’s an entirely different dress! It is ivory, normal strap line with lace straps, sweetheart neckline no fancy bodice, flower attachments on it!
