Behaviour that annoys you at the airport

Have taken refuge in a bar now but what behaviour annoys you at the airport?

My top 2:

People who walk passed the multiple signs at Heathrow telling them about the rules on liquids (written and pictorially) and express outrage when said liquids get confiscated or they spend ages already at the conveyor belt digging out all of their little bottles.

On the otherside of security the people who, instead of moving their tray to the little cubicles designed for the purpose, they stand at the exit to the baggage scanner putting on shoes, belts, watches etc causing a backlog through the people scanner.

People sitting at the back of the plane who put their hand luggage in the overhead bins at the front of the plane so there is no room to stow your hand luggage where you are sitting.

People who are sitting in your seat who refuse to move. In this case a child in an emergency exit seat, who wasn’t allowed to sit there anyway.

Gatwick's walk through lobby bit full of expensive shops is annoying and I agree that a way around this would be great. I hate shopping.

Rockingcloggs · 16/04/2023 14:17

It's not so much the airport that annoys me it's everyone that has ever stood up and filled aisle as soon as the plane comes to a standstill. They just stand there looking gormless, unable to go anywhere looking ridiculous. There is no reason for it. Just sit down until you are actually able to get off.

NowZeusHasLainWithLeda · 16/04/2023 14:18

@DoraSpenlow no, it's the seat in front. Those at the front (and near the emergency exits) have to put theirs in the overhead locker.

SirChenjins · 16/04/2023 14:21

People who get drunk before they get on the plane - like it’s an essential part of the holiday

Trunkies. Yes I’m sure they’re great and the kids love them blah blah but they are lethal on your ankles and cause a hold up as no-one can get past 3 kids all pushing themselves along on the same things while mum and dad look on indulgently

Groups of teenagers on school trips who take up the entire waiting area

Men with very important hobbies (cycling usually) who argue with the check in about what they can check in

PurBal · 16/04/2023 14:23

@Liverpool52 genuine question because I’m flying through Heathrow next week, do they still have clear bags for liquids or do I need to provide my own? Used to fly a few times a month and had my own, but definitely don’t anymore, I’m a bit anxious about it all!

Mine:

  • people who use cabin bags as their main luggage instead of checking it. Holds up security and boarding. If you don’t need it on the flight and it’s not valuable like a laptop it should go in the hold. I can get behind a change of clothes just in case. And I do understand not having to wait at the other end, but you’ve literally spent 2-3 hours in the airport one end, what’s 30 minutes at the other?! Irony being is that because so few people check luggage on budget airlines it takes no time at all to come through. I don’t blame people because the airlines created this shit show when hand luggage was free and they started charging to check a bag. But the entire terminal is full of bags, constantly tripping over someone’s huge wheeled suitcase.
  • people who rush to queue at the gate especially when their boarding group hasn’t been called so you have to try and find your way around them. I suppose it doesn’t annoy me that much because I just sit and wait until the end now.

PP mentioned people at the back being asked to check their bags. I was on a flight where everyone was told to check their bag if it had wheels. The case was TINY (laptop size, fits under the seat on RyanAir) but I just happened to choose one with wheels because I’d hurt my back. I said it would fit under the seat but nope, one rule for everyone (fair enough). I literally took everything out and put it into a carrier bag and they gate checked my empty case 🤷‍♀️

Yup.

Winemygoodenemy · 16/04/2023 14:27

I have another one. Person in queue had a toddler. Understandably was letting the toddler (who looked like just learned) walk about to entertain her. But not control her. The toddler was getting in way of people and falling over. Parents running back to get he. Queue was massive and people scared to move much as toddler going mental
running into people and crying. Even let her run about on runway until air port people told her to stop and hold the toddler. Was dangerous as was nearly running off into moving trucks

When you see FINAL CALL on the screen, panic and run to the gate only to see everyone still sitting down and another 30 minutes to start boarding. I hate that!

Oh I hate this. I had a proper stand off with a member of staff about it. I’d paid for lounge access (14 hour flight) and I’d been there 5 minutes after looking at duty free, not even had a chance to have a wee and got “final call, gate closing” only to get to the gate and it wasn’t even open. I told the staff I was going back to find a loo and was told if I left the gate area I’d be refused boarding.

JorisBonson · 16/04/2023 14:29

Bimbling people give me the ultimate rage. Move with purpose!

canyon2000 · 16/04/2023 14:33

People who get up out of their seats on the plane by holding onto the back of your seat and pulling themselves up.

mastertomsmum · 16/04/2023 14:34

Airlines charging for baggage

Liverpool52 · 16/04/2023 14:36

@PurBal they did when I flew about 6 weeks ago. I didn't have any liquids today so didn't notice but I think they do. The rules are changing in the summer but haven't changed yet so would think they still have the bags. If i have liquids I tend to grab a freezer bag from home.

Kids listening to their devices without headphones

Omg

Also, families rearranging the seating on the plane so they all sit together, when the children are not tiny babies

Quisquam · 16/04/2023 14:37

Hand luggage is my bugbear, I don't mean on short haul flights or those frequented by business travellers going to meetings for a couple of nights - I mean on flights where everyone has a 23kg checked luggage allowance . Why bring so much on board, what do you need for 7 hours??? Or even 4 hours in the case of TUI flights (free hold luggage was included with everyone's flight!) I carry a mid sized handbag on board, big enough for my passport, phone, book and a snack, it sits under the chair in front easily.

We go on birdwatching holidays. DH takes thousand of pounds worth of optical equipment - he doesn’t want it chucked about in the hold luggage, by the baggage handlers or possibly stolen or lost. We couldn’t buy some more at our destination, so it would ruin his holiday all round.

midsomermurderess · 16/04/2023 14:39

Not enough toilets, having to schlep through the concourse, down stairs etc to find them. Inadequate and uncomfortable seating, because after all, you’re really in a mall, shop!, shop! The usual dull, horribly over-priced food chains.

CordyLines · 16/04/2023 14:39

Agree with @Getabloominmoveon Air travel can be very stressful if you let it. I just look at the other morons and enjoy wondering how they can be so thick, selfish, slow, etc. There is no point getting annoyed, or wondering how Ms. Chancer got her mahoosive underseat bag on board, or how.... oh hell there are so many things. I can't change them.

As long as I am ok and organised myself, the rest of the human race can annoy someone else. Hell really is other people though!

Brendabigbaps · 16/04/2023 13:05

In all my 25+ years of flying I’ve never heard an announcement about not putting coats in overhead lockers. Is it a specific airline?
where are you supposed to put them?

Your coat needs to go on top of your one cabin bag in the locker. Not alongside your bag and your personal item and your duty free.

and yes it’s announced by staff as you board.

BlackberrySky · 16/04/2023 14:46

Insufficient or non-existent water filling stations.

Officious frequent flyers who think they have more right to the airport because they use it more often, and ignore the fact that many people are going on holiday and don't give a toss about "efficient movement" and other such crap.

Yes, both of those irritate me intensely. People can be very selfish.

Oblomov23 · 16/04/2023 14:52

People putting their bags above my seat, drives me wild.

EveryWitchWaybutLoose · 16/04/2023 14:53

Oh yesss @SirChenjins Trunkies. Again just selfish. They take up room in the overhead lockers and they are of no earthly use.

Any international airport that doesn't have a bar open 24/7. Very annoying.

God, this. I got delayed at Washington Dulles for a year and a day and could not BELIEVE how early everything shut! Shops by 6pm, and the last bar (not that there were many to start with) was closed by 10pm. others shut at 8pm. Absolutely ridiculous

FrangipaniBlue · 16/04/2023 15:08

On a recent flight I had a small backpack, tiny handbag, laptop, iPad, winter coat and boots (removed). It took up three trays. Sometimes there’s no option but to stand there scrabbling around for your stuff.

Nope. You quickly tip/pile all your stuff into 1 tray they carry that tray to the booth.
