Behaviour that annoys you at the airport

Have taken refuge in a bar now but what behaviour annoys you at the airport?

My top 2:

People who walk passed the multiple signs at Heathrow telling them about the rules on liquids (written and pictorially) and express outrage when said liquids get confiscated or they spend ages already at the conveyor belt digging out all of their little bottles.

On the otherside of security the people who, instead of moving their tray to the little cubicles designed for the purpose, they stand at the exit to the baggage scanner putting on shoes, belts, watches etc causing a backlog through the people scanner.

The baggage carousel one.

Ignore the line behind which trolleys are supposed to stay. Line up your trolley taking up 5’ of belt space. Have both parents plus kids there rather than leave kids with one parent at the back. Block access for people who can see their baggage.

Selfish idiots.

Also the causing of a bottleneck after security.

Hand luggage is my bugbear, I don't mean on short haul flights or those frequented by business travellers going to meetings for a couple of nights - I mean on flights where everyone has a 23kg checked luggage allowance . Why bring so much on board, what do you need for 7 hours??? Or even 4 hours in the case of TUI flights (free hold luggage was included with everyone's flight!) I carry a mid sized handbag on board, big enough for my passport, phone, book and a snack, it sits under the chair in front easily.

TheCrystalPalace · 16/04/2023 13:24

Everyone standing up the moment the plane stops moving.
How is that going to speed up your exit?
People who put their hand luggage on their seat and STAND BLOCKING THE FUCKING AISLE to get out anything they might need for the flight.

Wait til you get on the plane and everyone is using their phones and tablets in flight mode but at least 50% don't have headphones. Late night flight back from the Europe last week. I had Ben and Holly /Peppa Pig in front of me. Some guy playing slot machines behind me with a repetitive sound and the guy behind him watching their family videos with rhe kids screaming all at 11pm whilst I was trying to sleep. I was not impressed.

When people who are obviously flying home from a holiday (meaning that they have definitely taken at least one previous flight in their lives) appear to be encountering security, baggage scanning, requirements about tech and liquids etc for the very first time ever, and act as if they're being required to demonstrate a knowledge of Inca ritual or something.

They have flown at least once, probably within the last fortnight, and even allowing for different requirements at different airports, this should not be new information. Please stop pantomiming disbelief and outrage because Johnny Foreigner has asked you to take your phone out of your pocket.

I've been told to stand with the other women before, while the men get the cases. Except I usually travel alone, for business. The idea of a woman travelling alone was completely alien to the carousel hogs.

Floofydawg · 16/04/2023 13:40

People who let their kids stand in front of the baggage carousel, blocking the way for people who are actually going to lift cases off it.
People who fuck around with their belongings on the other side of security, causing a backlog to build up. Just pick up your stuff and fuck off.

My DC has ASD and isn’t good in long waiting situations. I always book special assistance but hate the way it sort of gets lumped together with priority boarding by the airline or with the family queue at security.

European airports are usually better at having slightly segregated pathways through the airport which I really appreciate.

Returning to the UK recently on a flight with a massive school ski trip contingent, the airline had distributed the students equally throughout all the queues including the priority queue which was already doubling up as speedy boarding and special assistance (we had both). I politely asked the staff member at the front of the queue what to do about my son and got told to join the long queue which would probably have ended in tears. A lovely teacher heard and immediately shooed us in front of all the kids - so thankful to him! I hate having to ask and wish airlines would pay more than lip service to disabled passengers.

Pre disabled DC, I traveled far and wide and didn’t really mind what happened as long as I arrived safely. I do find it surprising that so many airports seem to be completely unaware of how many passengers arrive on a daily basis though. I can’t imagine any other business not planning for volume of customers in quite the same way.

DoraSpenlow · 16/04/2023 13:43

Sorry, slight derail but I thought you were supposed put your small bags under your own seat? If everyone puts their stuff under the seat in front, where do the people in the front rows put their stuff?

Used to holiday with friends where the husband would hurtle at breakneck speed down to the departure lounge as soon it appeared on the board. We would then sit there for about an hour and as soon as boarding commenced he would be like a greyhound out of a trap and then huff and puff about the wait before take off.

More people seem to do this than not now, or at least it feels that way. Frequent traveller here and it's very irritating.

On a recent flight I had a small backpack, tiny handbag, laptop, iPad, winter coat and boots (removed). It took up three trays. Sometimes there’s no option but to stand there scrabbling around for your stuff.

PhillySub · 16/04/2023 13:44

People who can't look where they are going and trip over my case.

Damnloginpopup · 16/04/2023 13:46

People dawdling with fucking wheely cases.
People.

Can tell you've never had luggage go missing! I carry a day or twos clothes in hand luggage as well as medication and whatever I need for the flight. Small wheeled suitcase does me just fine.

Crumpleton · 16/04/2023 13:49

When waiting at the airport those people that feel their bag/s need a seat and refuse to move them.

Liverpool52 · 16/04/2023 13:51

@Brendabigbaps I've often heard it on short hops to Europe with BA.

Flew home last night - most annoying parts.
child (approx 5) kicking the back of the chair for 3 hours - asked them not to -stopped for a few mins then started, parent slept all the time so I get the kid was bored.

people usually men - leaning right over baggage carousel so nobody can see.

people being unable to walk in a straight line - or just stopping in front of you - everyone is going the same way just keep bloody moving.

small kids being allowed to wheel suitcases - getting in everyone’s way/tripping people over.

DoraSpenlow · 16/04/2023 13:54

Oh and the standing up on landing when told to stay seated until the aircraft has come to a complete stop. You are not going anywhere until the steps or tunnel has been attached so just sit down fgs.

Have a friend who is a pilot and he says that every so often he will either brake sharply or accelerate on his way to the gate just to emphasize the point to any twats on board who are already standing up when they shouldn't be.

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 16/04/2023 13:57

@Brendabigbaps Air Canada also do it, especially mid-winter when it’s -20 or below and everyone is travelling with a big coat.

Cheeseandlobster · 16/04/2023 13:58

GiveMyHeadPeaceffs · 16/04/2023 12:51

When they announce that the gate has opened for boarding and people stampede to get in the queue...and then stand there for ages. Generally I'll only join the queue when it's moving and fairly short ie near the end. My seat has been assigned and the flight isn't taking off without me.

Because with some airlines they ask people at the rear of the queue to put their hand luggage in the hold. I dont want to be rummaging around in my suitcase trying to locate essential items to then squeeze into my handbag

Winemygoodenemy · 16/04/2023 14:02

I recently travelled. I thought I had got organised. I had liquids in a small Bag ready to decant into the plastic bags. Electricals in a zip bag to empty on the tray. Book etc for flight entertainment in my handbag.

but no family in front took up plastic bag station and would t let anyone past it grab a bag. Long queue behind them as they checked the sizes as it’s new. Trays not coming quick enough. Said family blocking people collecting trays after scanning and getting checked as not everything h ended up in plastic Bags.

Unfortunately said family were on my flight and managed to block aisles while boarding, another massive hold up while getting things out their case to entertain them on a 3 hr flight!!! Then blocking the aisles getting off as they secured their space and surrounding people couldn’t get luggage out of lockers.

I am normally relaxed, but they really annoyed me with their blocking.

ShadowPuppets · 16/04/2023 14:02

I hat slow walkers at the best of times but the way that people slow down to 0.05mph going through the overpriced tacky shit shop ‘duty free’ drives me insane. I just want to be able to walk directly from security to get a coffee without having to get stuck behind a family of six walking in a horizontal row and marvelling at the big Toblerones and headache-inducing perfume like they’re Disneyland. I wish airports would put in an express route so you don’t have to go through the shop. I know it wouldn’t do their profits any favours but it would do wonders for my sanity.

Amen sister.

On my most recent flight, I had a lap baby and so I was eligible for the lap baby bag weighing in at 5kg (Ryanair) in addition to my own handbag-type allowance. I used just my changing bag (bog standard Bababing) which doubles as my handbag on a daily basis and serviced both me and my baby for our entire flight and onward journey.

It contained some nappies, wipes, bottles, milk, my phone and purse and AirPods, as well as a handful of toys. Everything else was checked into the hold. What the hell is everyone else packing!?

PuttingDownRoots · 16/04/2023 14:05

Most annoying experience I had....
Flight delayed by an hour. It was a 7.30pm flight, which meant it just tripped my 5yo over into the falling asleep at gate. So waited to board until queue died down. To find people had sat on our seats, while the plane was still boarding, as they thought it was an empty row.
One started to say "but we want to si..." before realising that the mother with a half asleep child in their arms probably needed the seats together more!

Genie321 · 16/04/2023 14:13

When you see FINAL CALL on the screen, panic and run to the gate only to see everyone still sitting down and another 30 minutes to start boarding. I hate that!

Getabloominmoveon · 16/04/2023 14:14

I fly almost every week for work and so am super-organised with my luggage etc. I find the easiest way of dealing with other passengers is to completely ignore them, so have blinkers on, let the airport staff and stewards sort out the problems, and just look after myself.
