Behaviour that annoys you at the airport

Liverpool52 · 16/04/2023 12:35

Have taken refuge in a bar now but what behaviour annoys you at the airport?

My top 2:

People who walk passed the multiple signs at Heathrow telling them about the rules on liquids (written and pictorially) and express outrage when said liquids get confiscated or they spend ages already at the conveyor belt digging out all of their little bottles.

On the otherside of security the people who, instead of moving their tray to the little cubicles designed for the purpose, they stand at the exit to the baggage scanner putting on shoes, belts, watches etc causing a backlog through the people scanner.

Then their employer should pay for two seats or a wider seat in business class.

Haha, you're living on a different planet.

And just for reference in the UK alone 25% of the population are obese and a further 38% are overweight. Personally I think it's down to the flight companies to get with the times and make seats to reflect this but hey ho.

There was no judgement in the post you quoted. It was fact and someone’s personal experience.

The fact that it involved someone who doesn’t fit comfortably in one plane seat doesn’t make it judgemental.

"Nobody needs to be that size" isn't judgemental? I'm no where near that size but I can don't judge anybody who is.

Probably - but in the meantime, if your size means you need more than one seat in order not to encroach into your neighbour’s space (the neighbour who is entitled to 100% of their seat) then you need to buy 2 seats.

I disagree. I don't take up more than one seat but totally understand that some people will. It's life. What about if you're 6 foot and your legs encroach on someone else's space? Should they book 2 seats too. Or the toddler who is wriggly and moves all over the row. Should their parents buy them 2 seats too? Or the cougher? Should they buy all the seats in a 2m radius? It's life that not everyone is the same and we have to be more tolerant of that.

rookiemere · 19/04/2023 12:43

There have been cases where people have ended up with long term health issues because of not having enough space with a very large person beside them.

I know once on a short flight, I was at the window and had a very big man beside me. He was unable to put his tray table down because of his girth. I was quite constricted and his body was touching mine through seat spillage for the flight which was unpleasant. The most worrying thing for me was in the case of an emergency, there's no way he would have been able to get out of his seat in a timely fashion- I'd worked out I would have to stand on my seat to get over him if that had happened.

I genuinely give not a hoot what size people are until they encroach on my space. Toddlers and coughers are something different.

SirChenjins · 19/04/2023 12:45

None of that whataboutery is equivalent to someone who is so fat that they spill into the next seat and push up against their neighbour for the entire flight. If I buy a seat I am entitled to 100% of it, no less.

I hat slow walkers at the best of times but the way that people slow down to 0.05mph going through the overpriced tacky shit shop ‘duty free’ drives me insane. I just want to be able to walk directly from security to get a coffee without having to get stuck behind a family of six walking in a horizontal row and marvelling at the big Toblerones and headache-inducing perfume like they’re Disneyland. I wish airports would put in an express route so you don’t have to go through the shop. I know it wouldn’t do their profits any favours but it would do wonders for my sanity.

Tip for Gatwick south. After you go through security there is an escalator down to the departure lounge. Don’t go down it, but take the passage way on the left marked pushchairs etc. it takes you straight to the level with all the restaurants.

If by "flight companies" you mean the airlines then to some extent some already do cater for differing sizes (business class, extra legroom seats etc).

If the idea is to increase all seat sizes by a significant amount then the manufacturers will have to reduce the number of seats per aircraft......and that will feed back into ticket prices....

rookiemere · 19/04/2023 13:14

Moderately overweight people fit in standard seats just fine, generally it's very obese that has the issue.

US I believe now offers the option for people to buy a second seat at a reduced price and that seems the fairest option for everyone.

Again though it comes very much down to attitude. Someone being apologetic about encroaching on your seat is a lot better than someone who grabs the arm rest and pushes it up because they are too big to fit in with it down. I'd much rather have the arm rest down as a handy demarcation of my seat versus somebody else's, but if asked if I mind I'd probably say it's ok.

Violaviolin · 18/04/2023 19:03

What if they have to travel regularly for work?

Lose weight?
Get a job which doesn't require air travel?
It's hardly something unchangeable.

My DH and DS are 6'6" and don't fit in standard seats. I wouldn't subject someone having to sit next to them.

Same I honestly don’t get why people rush. One of life’s great wonders

The thing is I got burned by doing this. Sat and waited until my group was called, but then by the time I got to the gate, the plane was already full of carry ons and my bag had to be put in the hold and I ended up waiting ages for it on the other end, which completely defeated the purpose of only carrying carry on.

Of course this wouldn’t be an issue if 1) everyone waited their turn instead of queueing and 2) everyone only brought the allowed amounts on board. But no one does this and I end up the mug.

NotAnotherBathBomb · 19/04/2023 13:28

Sorry if this is a repeat, but people who stand on the travellators (is that the word for them?) on the right with their luggage on their left, leaving no room for anyone to walk past.

That's fine if you want a rest but I still want to walk to where I'm going, just a bit faster.

How are coughers and toddlers different. Toddlers are wriggly. I've had them sprawl over me to try to get to the aisle in a flight. Coughers invade my space too. I'd rather deal with someone large than someone who who gives me a cold, flu, Covid, etc.

rookiemere · 19/04/2023 14:29

Squirmy toddlers don't give you DVT from wedging you in a fixed position for hours on end.
A cough is a short term ailment compared to long term back and leg issues.

@Violaviolin can you genuinely not see the difference in the scenario where you're trapped with not enough room in long haul because someone is taking up most of your space?

Silverperch · 19/04/2023 14:32

Not quite at the airport but on the plane and I need to vent.

On a recent return trip, both ways, a woman seated behind me placed her foot on my arm rest. Just suddenly noticed a foot nudging my elbow.

First time it took me a while to react, and the person argued before removing it. On the way back as soon as I felt that little socked foot I turned around and said take it down.

Just so rude when you have about 30 square centimetres of personal space and some fucker thinks they'll take a bit of the armrest, the bit to REST your ARM, for their sodding foot.

I agree. We live 10 minutes from Manchester Airport but have chosen to fly from Luton in the past. Much nicer!

Until recently I lived in Herts but paid £££ extra to fly from Heathrow or Gatwick, further away. I can't imagine ever using "Luton airport" and "nice" in the same sentence!

Well, to be fair, it probably was a bit, but it's true. I'm a bit overweight, so I think it's fair comment from me. Seriously, if someone is the same size as two average people, they can easily do something about it.

Anyway, thread being derailed, especially when it's about AIRPORT behaviour

Why can't people do anything without alcohol? Horrible.

DH is 6"3 with long legs. We pay for extra leg room. I really don't see an issue with also paying extra for wider or extra seats. Surely the oversize travellers would prefer to be comfortable?

Am I allowed to moan about the behaviour of the parking companies?
The local resident scheme at Stansted is supposed to let me to exit the drop off zone for 50p but mysteriously never works and robs me of £7 every bloody time. Thieves.
